My iPhoto starts up very slowly.

My iPhoto starts up very slowly. Spinning beach ball for about 10-15 sec. before any photos load up. Have done everything that Apple Support has suggested. Works once or twice and back to the same thing again.

There have been two possible fixes for this:
1 - move the HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop and reboot. (see houseboat's post at the end of this discussion: spinning beachball suddenly every time now at launch )
NOTE:  this will remove your Mac's name from the System/Sharing preference pane.  Go that pane and reenter the name you gave the Mac originally. It can mess up  some sharing and LAN connections.

2 - Go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and remove any mail account that has been slow lately.  This helped a couple of users that had several mail accounts. However, I would consider it to be a last last chance option and if you had several accounts.  Be sure to take a screenshot of the settings for each mail account you might remove so you can add them back easily if the fix wasn't worthwhile.

  • Portege A100 suddenly started going very slowly

    Hi,
I have a Portege A100 which has suddenly started going very slowly. It takes a good 5 minutes to load completely up when it used to be far faster. I have tried reloading Windows onto it several times but as soon as you start loading other pieces of software onto it the speed deteriorates significantly.
I have also tried using software to completely wipe the hard drive before putting Windows back on but this doesn't seem to solve the problem either.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hello David
I have had similar behavior on my old Satellite 1900. At the end I have checked HDD and there are many bad sectors. At the beginning everything was OK but after installation of few different applications Satellite was slower and slower.
At the end I have exchanged HDD and everything was OK again. I recommend you to check HDD to see if there are some bad sectors. If yes buy new HDD. Sector repair will not help much.

  • Java apps have started running very slowly since last update.  Anyone else experiencing any problems.

There is an java app that I have run for years without any problem  Within the last few days it started running very slowly.  I went to the Apple store and ran the same app and experienced exactly the same problem
Yesterday I tried running this app on a Windows based machine and it ran perfectly.
I was all set to download the latest java when I saw that Apple supplied the java version on the MAC.
I have run sotware updates and get results that all software is uptodate.
    Any suggestions?

There are many people who have posted about persistent  export failures since the update. A search will uncover a number of threads just within the past month. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to these problems – and if there is common fix, I haven't heard about it.
However, the update hasn't been a problem for me – nor presumably has it been for the majority of users.

I have the same problem, tried different methods to solve this but nothing helped, now it is starting to be irritating!

  • Start application very slowly, most time is used to load rt.jar class. Why?

When I start my java application, it is very slowly.
    The example code :
    public class MyApp{
    public static void main(....){
    System.out.println("Start--------");
    System.out.println("Stop-------");
    I start application with command:
java -verbose -classpath .;c:\path1;c:\path2\2.jar -Xmx200m MyApp
Wait for 1 minute, the application is not still be started.
I have check the loaded class names printed by JVM "-verbose" parameter, MyApp class has not been loaded, all loaded classes are loaded from rt.jar. No any exception is reported.
After more than 2 minutes, the MyApp class is loaded. Then, my application is started very quickly( in 10 seconds).
After check again the classpath parameters, I find "c:\path1" is not exsited in local host. I remove it from classpath, the problem is resovled.
I am confused that an error path in "-classpath" parameter list can cause application is start so slowly. I also execute the command in other 4 PCs, it works quickly on 3 PC but slowly on 1 PC.
Do you know what is the real reason?
How can I find out which task the time is wasted on? ( I have try to open remote debug port and attach on it to debug, but failed. Because the JVM has not been completely started at that time, jdb can not attach the JVM. )

I doubt that such a nonexisting path in classpath does any harm - I tested it. We have on some computers very slow startups of the JVM and the reason is the virus scanner. On some systems, the virus scanner runs with default configuration, meaning: scan everything, including ZIP archives, JAR archives, etc. and this is very expensive as the virus scanner also dearchive each JAR file to inspect the files in the archive. After removing the *.zip, *.jar files from the virus scanning list (at least in defined paths with known JAR files), the startup went down from 1-2 minutes to just a few seconds.

  • IPhoto is loading very slowly and very unresponsive

I am running a 24" iMac with 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB SDRAM.
I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 and really enjoy some of the new features, but it is running terribly slowly.  I have about 19,000 photos and very few videos, is that too many?  Should I split my Library into 2 smaller ones?  I would rather not have to do that but it is difficult to accomplish anything with how slowly it is running.
Any advice on ways to speed it up?  Is there library maintenace that can be done to make it run smoother?
    Thanks,
    April

Terence is correct about the amount of RAM.  1 GB is entire too little for any kind of performance.  That model can handle up to 3 GB so I strongly suggest  purchaseing a 2 GB memory stick for the iMac and install it.  It's not difficult to install memeory in the iMac.
You'll see a trememdous increase is overal response and speed.
Also how much free space do you have on your hard drive.  To optimize system and application speed and performance you should have a minimum of 10 GB of free space.

  • Copying of iPhoto library going very slowly

    Hello, all,
Yesterday I purchased a brand new 1TB firewire 800 external drive. It's correctly formatted for my Mac. I had wanted to put my iPhoto library on this drive, OR use it as a backup location for the library. Either way, I needed to copy it over from my iMac's internal drive.
I tried twice to copy the library (using the Finder), which lists itself as 89GB. Each time the Finder progress bar indicated the copy would take two to three days. That sounded like way too short a time over Firewire 800. To test things out, I did a different backup copy of my *iTunes* library, which is also over 80GB. That library lives on a different external drive, using Firewire 400. THAT copy took less than an hour, and it had to go downstream from one external and then upstream to the new external. A second copy of other files from that external drive also went swimmingly: 22GB in about 12 minutes.
Does anyone have any insight into what might be happening? Is there something unusual about iPhoto libraries that makes them copy more slowly than other kinds of files?
    Thanks for your help!

I found a fast soution 45 Gb Library copied in ~30 min. over USB 2.0
I did a semi-manual copy, by opening the iPhoto Library - "Show package contents" (in right click menu)  then copying the contents to a new iPhoto libaray "Package"
Instead of copying all at once copy the small files/folders in one batch, wati to complete, then copy the larger files folders.  You can copy the package contents one folder at a time or a few at a time. I found that copying the Library files in one batch, then copying the Masters, Previews, & Thumbnails in a second batch seemed to work well without choking up.
    Here's the steps
Connect your hard drive or Mac in Target disk mode
navigate to the folder containing the iPhoto Library you wish to copy
    'Right click' Show Package Contents
You'll see apx 19 files - select all but exclude 3 folders: Masters, Previews, & Thumbnails you'll come back for theses later
Copy these files to an empty folder on your destination drive/Mac (Later you'll use iPhoto to make a new libary "Package" then you'll put these files inside it) The copy should take  a few minutes, high volume + tiny files
When the first copy is finished, go back and copy the remaining 3 folders Masters, Previews, & Thumbnails.  This is the opposite as previous step, lower volume + larger files.  Copy speeds should be normal ie 30 min. for 45 Gb over USB 2.0.
Once all these files and folders are copied you need to put them into an empty iPhoto Library container.  An easy way to do this is
Launch iPhoto holding the Option key
Choose 'New Library' (choose an apprpriate name)
    Quit iPhoto
in Finder go to the new Library you just created (User/Pictures/) - be sure its the one you just made
Right Click (Control + Click) the iPhoto Libraray
Choose - Show Package Contents (now you're looking at the contents that makup an iPhoto library)
Select all these files and folders and delete them to the trash Open the folder that has your freshly copied files and put them in this empty iPhoto Library package.
Close finder windows (disconnect your hard drive or Mac)
Launch iPhoto (you can hold the Option Key while launching iPhoto to choose the correct Library if you have more than one).
Viola. You should have a functional copy from your old Mac/External hard drive.
    REMEMBER!
The easiest way to mess up your iPhoto Library is to move things around inside the "Package contents" of your iPhoto Library.  Its hidden in there for a reason, so don't go mucking about under the hood.  Best practice is to touch nothing inside the "Show Package Contetns" of your iPhoto library.    As described above, we're merely just speeding up a file transfer and copying files so they mirror their source in a new destination.  Good luck.

  • IPhoto is running VERY slowly, I often have to force quit.

All other applications run normally and I am on a MacBook running 10.6.8. Using iPhoto '09 8.1.2  I have about 55 GB of pics.

Well bearing in mind that the OS requires a minimum of 1 gig or RAM then yes, the amount of Ram left for applications is quite small, especially if you're have several running at once.
If that is the case, then yes, HD space becomes very significant, as it's used for Virtual Memory - and you have less than 10% of your HD available. What this means is that the OS now is looking through the disk for unused space to utilise as Virtual Memory, and as the disk is crowded, that takes more time.
The rule of thumb is usually that you would have a minimum of 10 gigs of Space or 10% of the HD free - whichever is the greater.
You'll see an improvement in  performance if you create more disk space and add Ram. I certainly would not let my available disk space get any smaller.
You can run iPhoto, iTunes and iMovie (the usual space hogs) from external disks formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
The Cache is in your User/Library/Caches folder. Just drag the iPhoto folder therein to the trash. It'll be recreated next time you launch iPhoto.
Rebuilding:  Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    As always: Back Up First
    Regards
    TD

  • Iphoto is streaming very slowly with my new ATV 2? why?

I have about 100+ Events. Some Events have 20 pictures, some have 100 pictures; I have two issues
    1) Trying to load an Event and the pictures in the Event I feel takes around 1min+ most of the times (feels like forever) - I dislike the experience
    2) the Events are arranged OLDEST to NEWEST. The Newest is in the bottom, it takes forever to get to the Newest Event - is there anyway I can rearrange NEWEST to OLDEST - I played around a bit but did not succeed.
Thanks for the support in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your slideshows are slow, it's likely to be your network that is slow, check for interference and change wifi channel if necessary.
I use albums for my photos on the Apple TV rather than events, you can arrange albums into any order you wish in iphoto and that order is retained on the Apple TV.

  • My mid 2010 MBP started running very slowly

    Hey guys,
I have had my MBP for a few years now and over the last few months my laptop has seen major decreases in speed. I have ran an EtreCheck so far and pasted it below for your reference of my diagnostics. Looking for some extra help on how to speed this bad boy up. Thanks in advance.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very slowly! Please help!

Hi all, as of late last year my MacBook Pro started running very slowly. As I'm a novice when it comes to computers I thought I'd turn to the interweb for solutions. I've tried a couple of basic things but don't seem to be getting anywhere.I ran the EtreCheck program as it seemed to help others. Would love some help interpreting this...

    Thanks in advance! Mike

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • My internet has started running extremely slowly for no apparent reason. Please help?

The internet on my Macbook suddenly started running very slowly, it can take 5-10 minutes to load a page. This isn't a problem with my internet connection as our other devices are working fine. I have tried installing updates but seems to be too slow for them to install and have also reset Safari.
    Appreciate your help!

  • Running VERY slowly, software quitting unexpectedly...

    Hi,
A couple of days ago my MBP started running very slowly – everything from opening an app to surfing the net. I put the slow internet down to an issue with my internet tethering (via iPhone 4), but then everything else started going wrong…
I was trying to update Skype from version 2.x to version 5, but the download never completed; I had also been in the process of downloading a few podcasts, but had paused these transfers to try and speed up the Skype download.
Then I kept receiving error messages that were saying that Firefox had ‘quit unexpectedly’, and then the same happened with error messages for Skype. I tried reporting these issues, reopening the app, and ignoring the issue, but nothing happened. Now I have uninstalled Skype.
I then noticed that my shortcut bar wouldn’t appear properly when I moved my cursor to the bottom of the screen, although it would pop up maybe 15-30 seconds later. Trying to open a Finder window, or clicking on a shortcut would take forever for the action to complete, and now iTunes and Firefox wont open at all.
I have started backing things up to an external hdd, and this takes forever too – it took all night to update my Aperture 3 Vault, and I was told it would take >90 hours to backup iTunes. With my iTunes backup, it actually stops midway through the process because of some issue with an iPhone app (Urbanspoon). Once I have everything backed up, I guess I’ll need to reinstall OSX, but would like to avoid doing that if I can – especially as my hdd is starting to overheat from all the work it is doing (and the fact that all backups are taking so long!). The last thing I want is my external hdd to crash and lose my backups! I left the MBP this morning whilst it was running the Repair Disk element in Disk Utility, and I have just read about Hardware Test, which I will try after work.
My research has suggested that this issue could be due to a memory issue, RAM or hdd overload, or even a failing hdd. Either way, it’s very disappointing as I’ve only had the machine since Dec 2010.
I am running Snow Leopard, and am up-to-date with all system updates, and would be very grateful for any suggestions.
    Thanks.
