My iPhoto window won't open!

Hi,
I tried to connect iPhoto to Facebook last night, and something went wrong.  Now when I click on the iPhoto icon, it seems to open the application and I see the task bar, but the window doesn't open and I can't see my photos.  I tried quitting the app and reopening it several times, with no luck.  I restarted the computer and still no luck.  I deleted the iPhoto app from my Facebook, since the problem seemed to have begun after I tried connecting them and uploaded a photo to Facebook.
When I click to open the iPhoto preferences window, the window opens but the ball circles and I can't do anything.
I see that the folder is still on my hard drive, so I'm reassured that I haven't lost it (and I have a Time Machine backup), but I'm concerned that I can't see my pics because I have an enormous iPhoto library that's very important to me.
Some other info:  I have a few iPhoto libraries and my hard drive is nearly full -- I'm in the process of trying to clean it up, so I duplicated it and am cleaning up one version.  It's in an odd location on my hard drive, under Documents and then under another folder.  My iPhoto version is 8.1.2 and my OS is 10.7.5.
Please help!
Thank you.

Not if you follow directions - step one is to make a backup so you are totally safe
Since you have a problem with your library it is impossible to tell what it is or when it occurred - it may or may not be recent - it could be an old problem that your FB activity uncovered - rebuilding is the best route
No you do not need a separate backup - although I prefer one since it is easier to restore than a TM backup - yes simply dragging the iPhoto library to any hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) is a perfect way to make this backup
iPhoto always opens the last used library so until you specifically direct it to a new library it knows nothing about it

  • My iPhoto '11 won't open.

My iPhoto '11 won't open even after I've intalled updates and reinstalled the application.  Any other suggestions?

First iPhoto_Pref_and_Cache  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Next, if needed,    Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Help! Mail freeze: window won't open, nor will it close so I can restart

I've just had a strange problem with Mail. The window won't open - or has issues with opening (it did, but only briefly). It's generally having problems - its menus aren't dropping down - and I would like to quit and restart the computer (a Mac Mini). I've tried an apple q and nothing is happening. So the computer won't restart unless I force a shut down by manually holding down the button.
    Any suggestions most welcome…

  • HT5037 The iPhoto Library Upgrader tool doesn't work. I've downloaded it, and follow the directions, but iPhoto still won't open.

The iPhoto Library Upgrader tool doesn't work. I've downloaded it, and follow the directions, but iPhoto still won't open.

    Your Library is damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

  • Iphoto '08 won't open

Iphoto '08 won't open.  I tried removing the battery and putting it back in.  I have 18,000 pictures.  Hope I haven't lost them.  Do have a separate hard drive for back-up.  didn't do anything unusual.  ????

What happens when you try? Any error messages?

  • The hyperlink window won't open in 2014 version.  Anyone else having this problem?

The hyperlink window won't open in 2014 version.  Anyone else having this problem?  I'm using HP Envy Laptop with Windows 8.1.

Sort of. As part of the next update we'll make Muse ignore the 125% scale setting. This will make it easier for you to use that setting with all your other applications, but even when your Display is set to scale 125% the Muse UI will be presented at 100%. Unfortunately the current transition architecture of Muse (part native 64-bit app and part Adobe AIR app internally) combined with how Windows 8 and 8.1 achieve 125% scaling means it will be quite some time before Muse will be able to correctly support 125% Display scaling. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • IPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version

I have an early 2009 mac pro desktop with 6 megs of ram. iPhoto error, won't open, says it needs the most recent version to work but the most recent version won't work either because I have Mountain Lion. I downloaded iPhoto from the App store and the store said "you can't download the most recent version because you don't have Mavericks - would you like to download an older version?" So I said yes and downloaded it. It is actually the Mavericks version that downloads anyway. So I used an older version from my other computer and updated it to version 9.4.3. When I try to open it it says you need the most recent version. My library is on an external drive which was downgraded from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion because Mavericks wouldn't work properly on my computer. Now no version will open.
What can I do? Thank you for your help in advance.

    The exact error message is:
THe library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. Then the Quit button is at the bottom of the dialog box.
I did install iPhoto 9.5 when I installed Mavericks, Keep in mind that all of my photos are not on the boot drive but they are on an external drive. I then got rid of Mavericks and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion then I copied the contents of a previous drive that only had Mountain Lion on it. 9.5 wouldn't open in Mountain Lion so I copied an older version from another computer and updated it to 9.4.3. 9.4.3 says you must upgrade to the latest version and 9.5 says you need an older version. So I am stuck now.

  • Fresh install of iPhoto 11 won't open - say's it needs update.

    Hi,
I need some help here. I just re-installed my MBP (mid 2010) with OSX Lion, got all updates. After that i installed my iLife 2011 software bundel, and got every update downloaded and installed. Rebootet and then tried to start iPhoto (for the first time since my re-install). Now it says: "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the lastest version." Problem is, that i allready did this before i tried to start iPhoto - So i'm stuck. iPhoto has been installed from the iLife 2011 bundel DVD, and not from the App Store.
Hope some of you can help me. I have searched the discussion forum, and i all i find is some guides aboout deleting som cache files, but these does not exsist on my mac, because iPhoto has never beed opened.
Ps. I made a backup of my iPhoto library, before i did the Lion reinstall - so nothing is lost.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Denmark )
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had the same happen to me, i updated with an ilife11 dvd, iphoto now won't open says i need to do the software update but everything is up to date when i run the update.  I tried to do the steps you suggested above, but i can't 'get info' on iphoto to see what version i have, when i try to click the icon the same little box pops up saying i need to update to latest version, run software update now to install.  I did try searching another way and it looks like i have iphoto 9.0 on Mac and last modified last night when i did what i thought was an ugrade. i was under the impression i was upgrading my current iphoto 9 to iphoto 11 when i did the ilife dvd.  (im computer illiterate) anyhow i can't open iphoto now and im wondering if i've just lost all my pictures that i've never backed up, at this point i could care less about upgrading to the newest app, i just want all my photos back.  Do you think i should put the dvd back in and try it again or will that just mess everything up now (new apps and other updates that came on that dvd seem fine when i open them)
    I'm using a Mac OS X version 10.6.8

  • Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences

So, in my FCP7 projects, the Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences first. I've tried new projects, old projects, open all new windows on top settings. Once I delete the preferences, viola, opens right up. I can rebuild my preferences and after just a few days it won't open again... without preference delete.
I'm on a Macbook Pro 17'" i7 and do most of my editing on a 27" Apple Cinema Display. This is the only reason I could come up with. However I did some editing from the Macbook's screen and after 1 day, the Boris 3D editing window again refused to open. I have no idea. Is this is a known bug, etc.?
    Help!

With Final Cut not running, trash the Boris Title 3D preference file.
    /Library/Preferences/Title 3D Preferences
Also, you could have a corrupt or duplicate font file. Open FontBook and check it out.

  • Console Window won't open

Have 2, i7 MBPR. One is running 10.8.5 and one is running Maverick 10.9.4. On the one with 10.9.4, whenever I launch the console.app, the window won't open. Even when I choose "New Log Window" or command n from the menu. The MBPR running 10.8.5, the console.app works as it should. Anyone else running 10.9.x experience the same and found a fix?

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Then re-install the OS.

After I upgraded, the iphoto window would not come up. The menu bar at the top is active, and I am able to access my photos from Full Screen View. But when I toggle back, and close full screen, everything closes...
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • IPhoto '08 - Export window won't open

My iPhoto '08 (v 7.1.5) has been working under Leopard without a problem. I have tabs for Facebook and Shutterfly installed for quick uploads.
Today I signed up at PhotoWorks and installed their Photostream2 uploading software. While installing, I was offered the option of installing and iPhoto plugin for quick uploads. Photoworks website says that they have tested this plugin with iPhoto '08 and Leopard.
After the installation, iPhoto's File Export window does not open. Nothing happens when I select the Export menu item.
I have been on the line with PhotoWorks' support and they clearly do not know anything about this.
They asked me to delete the Photoworks/Photostream pref (.plist file) which I did. iPhoto's Export feature still doesn't work.
Has anyone encountered this and can anyone offer suggestions on how to get my iPhoto Export working again?
    Thanks

I’m surprised that the Plug-in doesn’t appear in the Get Info window - it should but not every developer goes about these things the right way.
Back to iPhoto in the Applications Folder. Right Click on it and select ‘Show Package Contents’ from the contextual menu. A Finder window opens with the Contents Folder. Into that and find the Plug-ins folder and drag the errant plug in to the desktop and try again.
If the Plug-in is not there then back to the makers to ask them where they put the darned thing.
