My iPhoto won't quit or open!

I need to restart my computer, but the application running is interfering with the restart process. I've tried to open the program and also force quit, neither will work. I tried reading some posts about the same issue, but the only solutions included opening the program (which I cannot do).
Please help!

Try to boot into Safe Mode.  If you can and iPhoto doesn't start up automatically go and:
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion - my iPhoto won't quit and Mountain Lion won't let me do a force quit

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion but when it ries to quit all programmes to install my iPhoto won't quit as albums are being sync'd.  I try to stop and quit but it won't.  I then try to force a quit and Mountain Lion won't let it.  help!

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this turn on the mac, click on the black apple then force quit and make sure all apps are closed
open app store and try again to install the mountain lion

  • Iphoto won't quit, won't import photos, stalls while editing photos despite rebuilding the database

I have mountain lion and the newest version of iphoto.   It won't quit unless I force quit it, it won't import photos, it won't let me edit photos without freezing up.   I have tried rebuilding the database and repairing permissions without success

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it freezes also try this:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the new library doesn't freeze or act like your current library then your current library is the culprit.
In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I was syncing my sisters iPhone to iTunes and she unplugged it and later I tried syncing my iPhone and it was still trying to cancel the sync from hers so I tried closing iTunes but now it won't quit or reopen and computer won't restart because the app is open.

  • Premiere Pro CC 14 won't quit or open projects

    Hi-
Here is my situation.  My HD crashed in my iMac last week and it has been replaced by Apple.  I've now reinstalled all of my apps.  Everything seems to be working fine except for Premiere.  I can open Premiere, open a project and it loads fine.  If I try to quit or open another project while Premiere is open, it does nothing.  Literally nothing.. just sits there like nothing had happened.  Even if I can get to the open project window, I'll select the project to open and then it just returns to the current project... with no options to save, cancel, etc.  I can still work in the project after this.. no spinning pinwheel or hang up.
I did use a Time Machine backup to get a lot of my files back.  I'm not sure if that messed up permissions or what, but I have followed the steps listed by Kevin here to no avail Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later) .
One thing I did try was making a new user account with admin privileges and Premiere seemed to work.  The only issue is that many of my other programs don't work because the serial # is associated with my main user account.
Here are the specs of my machine:
    iMac 27" late-2012
    3.4 GHZ i7
    32 GB DD3 RAM
    OS X 10.9.5
Any help would be much appreciated since I'm close to a stand still since I can't move from project to project.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

    Just to follow up..
I was able to contact Adobe via their online chat. I had a representative do a screen share to figure out what was going on.  From what I can tell, he went in and repaired permissions for my Applications folder, updated the CUDA driver and deleted all of the "Adobe" folders in the user profile and the system profile.  After that, he re-opened Premiere and everything seems to work now.  It must have been some corrupt file in one of the Adobe folders OR a bad permission.  Either way, I thought I'd report back.

    Hi-
My iPhoto will not quit/close as it keeps saying that it's "importing" photos however, there isn't anything connected to the laptop that it would be importing photos from. How can I "force" the program to shut down? Due to it not closing, it wont permit me to turn the computer off.

  • IPhoto won't quit! Empty trash with 8000 +....

Cleaned up iPhoto, deleting, now have 8000+ images in iPhoto trash. Click iPhoto Trash>Empty Trash, and separate upper right "Empty Trash" button... neither one will dump all these photos.... And the program freezes with swirling after the box shows it is emptying iPhoto trash.... NOT. Please help, after many tries this is becoming ugly.

    Hello Old Toad:
Thank you for your suggestion. I've seen it in other discussions.
I've been using iPhoto for many years. I've been using a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2007 era iMac the whole time. I'm now using iPhoto v8.1.2.
My iPhoto library is now quite large with about 40,000 photos and about 175 G in total size. I have put a lot of time into organizing the photos. Everything is religiously backed up.
Over the past year or so the performance of iPhoto in terms of speed has been slowly declining. It takes a long time to open, but the most cumbersome is the spinning beach ball when I "commit" to enhancements to a photo I've made (contrast, saturation, sharpness etc). Recently that beach ball could actually take 3-5 minutes. I find this intolerable.
So I started researching this to see if others have the problem. As best I can make out after a few hours of research is that my library is too large and my computer too old. I don't want to replace my computer becuase of iPhoto so I started researching the idea of splitting my library into smaller libraries.
I found several 3rd party programs (iPhoto Buddy, iPhoto Library Manager) that made it seem they may be able to help me easily split my library into several libraries. Unfortunately neither actually does this but instead tells you how you need to do that manually.
The methods to split your library manually they suggest are horrendously tedious for a 40,000 photo library with over 1,000 carefully constructed Events.
And this brings me to where I stand today. I copy my entire library to an external hard drive, open the copied library and what I WANT to do is prune it to say 1/10 of the size (say two years of my photos). (Realize I'll have to do this process of copying my entire library 10 times, and pruning each time.)
But then I find out that iPhoto totally chokes when you try to trash more than "80-100" photos at a time! Morever, I come to find out that emptying the trash of even 80 photos takes 3-5 minutes!
Although I appreciate the help and advice, perhaps you can understand my frustration with Apple. I'm literally an indentured servant to iPhoto if I want to preserve all the work I've done on my library. I'd switch to another program if it would preserve all my events but I can not find one that does.
    1. The performance of their software declines with no warning to the point where it can't be used unless you're unemployed and have nothing else to do.
    2. You look for a fix and find you have to split your library.
    3. When you try to split your library you find it will takes days and days of tedious work to complete.
So that is my story. That is why I'm so angry with Apple.
Have I missed anything or am I doomed to this dreary work?
Thank you for any help and guidance you can provide.

  • IPhoto won't load or open or do anything

I know this has been asked but I can't seem to find an answer to my particular problem-when I click on iphoto in the dock it bounces once and then does nothing-it won't open or load or think no messages come up -it's as if i don't have the program at all. I just got this imac computer new maybe 2 months ago and when i installed it-it worked fine-its just all of a sudden that it wont do anything-and when I look for my photos I can only see them in the recently opened documents section of finder.
I hope someone can help? Also, i hope this isn't too stupid of a question I'm really a PC person so Mac's are all new to me.
    Thanks again!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPhoto won't let me open it using the option key

When I try to open iphoto with the option key held down I get tne error message "the library is a Time Machine copy and cannot use". The only option I have is to Quit which gives me a viscous circle. How can I change to another library without opening using the option key.

    Thanks for the reply.
I am not trying to use a library from a Time Machine backup. I have made a library from Time Machine by restoring it and that is the one I want to use.
It had worked just two weeks ago, but now I am getting the error message with only the "QUIT" option and the revolving circle indicating the program is trying but not suceeding.
I believe iPhoto is pointing to the pictures in my user's files - MacSSD/Users/JBL/pictures. I deleted a small iPhoto Library (7.4mb) that had been given a 3/14/14 designation and now there isn't an iphoto library in pictures. I'm not sure how that file got created, but iPhoto started last using the restored library that resides on an external hard drive.
How can I determine where iPhoto is pointing to find the library without opening iPhoto which I can't do because of the circular QUIT option?
Any further help will be most appreciated.

  • Iphoto won't let me open up my Library

    Hi I'm having some issues.
Basically I recently factory restorered my Imac
My specs for my Imac are as follows
    24 inch
    4gb memory
    3.06gh intel core 2 duo
    639 gb storage
    Running Mavericks
So as mentioned, I restored it as I wanted to basically cleanse it to speed it up and start anew ( it was running really slow)
That all worked out fine, and then I proceeded to install all the old I life software as it turns out you have to pay for them now, even though I bought the I life 09 disk when I bought the Imac originally.
I installed I life, and I wanted to open up the photo's that I backed up ( My Iphoto Library) however upon attempting to open it I get the following message
So after seeing this I did some research and came across Iphoto library manager, however it only partially fixed the problem, as I rebuilt the library but very little of it actually came across so many photos were still missing from the original library. This even resulted in Iphoto ( version 8.01 currently installed) constantly crashing upon opening the newly rendered library, I found out that my original library was built using Iphoto 8.1.2 so basically how can I get 8.1.2 back or better yet update to the latest Iphoto without having to pay ( I did pay for the original, I have the disc!)
Please inform, as even when I click software update, Iphoto never comes up with the option to update it

Since you upgradedto v10.9 Mavericks, you will need to purchase the iPhoto app from the App Store.
Open the App Store then select either Featured, Top Charts, or Categories at the top of the window then type iPhoto in the search field to the right then select iPhoto from the list.
You'll see:  Compatibility: OS X 10.9 or later under Information on the right.
Older iPhoto versions will not run on  v10.9 Mavericks.
That is why the dialog is advising you to use the latest version of iPhoto.

  • IPhoto won't quit - says it's importing

I import CF cards using a Sandisk FW reader.
I quit an import that seemed to hang. Tried again and it said it had started importing but the import dialogue and CF card icon disappeared.
CF card was still mounted in Finder ( I was copying (not moving) the DCIM folder to backup drives - this completed successfully ).
I cannot close iPhoto gracefully and forcing quit will presumably mess up the library.
    Any suggestions?
    AC

Not sure if it's done any harm but I went to Activity Monitor and Quite the Image Capture Extension process after which iTunes announced there was a problem importing a photo and allowed me to quit.

  • Hi! Photos import from my IPhone 4 to iphoto '09 got stuck in the middle. now iPhoto won't quit (no Force Quit either)

I had to do the "command/option/esc" command. iPhoto successfully closed and reopened. I figure it would be better to import fewer pictures mutliple times. I could do it once, but now my iPhone library wont be detected in my iPhoto ((
    Please Help

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?
