My iPod 3rd gen won't update past 4.2.1

As stated, my 3rd gen iPod won't update past 4.2.1, is this the cap for iOS on 3rd gen, or can it go higher?

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

  • IPod 3rd Gen 32gb cannot update to 5.1.1

    Greetings,
I have been trying to update my ipod 3rd gen to 5.1.1 and cannot seem to update it at all.  Gives me device could not be found but it syncs absolutely fine.  To confirm that it is a 3rd gen I do have safari as the web browser.
The computer I have is brand new and I copied all my music over from backup dvds that I had.  I run Win 7 home premium 64 bit, itunes is in fact the 64 bit version.  Nothing I have tried works whatsoever.  Please help.

    Try:
    - Reboot the computer
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try a different cable
    - Try a different USB port
    - Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

  • IPod 3rd gen won't restore

I have a 3rd gen iPod shuffle I bought a month ago. It's been working great until one day I went to listen to it and it told me to "Please restore iPod on iTunes." I did so, got all my songs back onto the iPod and went to eject it. When I hit eject using iTunes, it tells me that "The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application." It won't let me restore it either for the same reason. When I eject the iPod from my Finder it ejects fine. However, when I plug my headphones in and turn it on, I can't get any music to play. Please help?!

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

  • 3rd gen won't boot past apple symbol

My 3rd gen ipod won't boot up. It only display the Apple symbol, makes a few clicks and restarts, looping over and over. The computer does not register it because it hasn't fully booted up. Tried connecting it to both mac and pc. I cannot reset it or restore it.
Trouble started when ipod did not sync correctly.

My 3rd gen just did the same thing. I would guess it is toast. Anyone? I tried a reset, but no luck. I was hoping I could restore it, but it will not even be acknowledged by my computer

  • My iPod touch 3rd gen won't update to iOS 5

iTunes keeps displaying the message saying that I have the latest update. I have iTunes 10.5 installed and everything, it's just that the iOS update won't come through. I currently have iOS 4.2 on my iPod. Any help is appreciated.

If your iPod Touch is 8GB than it is actually a 2nd gen and the highest it can go is iOS level 4.2.1.

  • IPod Touch 1st gen won't update past 2.2.1 ?

I have a first generation iPod Touch running iOS version 2.2.1, and the most recent iTunes 9.2.1 running on Windows 7.
When I click "Check version" on iTunes it says that 2.2.1 is the latest version and that my iPod is up to date. I realize 1st generation iPod Touches are not supported with iOS 4 but I'd like to upgrade to 3.x since more and more apps require that to work.
Is this a bug in Apple's part or am I not allowed to upgrade to 3.x anymore?

  • IPod Touch (4th Gen) Won't Update Past iOS 6.1.6

I have an iPod Touch (4th Generation). I'm trying to connect to Family Share but it needs to be updated to iOS 8. My iPod is saying it's up-to-date at iOS 6.1.6.
I have tried updating directly from the iPod (Settings > General > Software Updates) and I've also connected it to my Mac OS X Yosemite / iTunes 12.01.126 with no luck. Nothing is recognizing that this device needs to be updated.
How can I update this iPod to iOS 8?

iOS 7 or iOS 8 isn't compatible with iPod Touch  4G
you have the latest version available

  • Ipod 3rd Gen won't hold charge

I got a 3rd generation Ipod used for my sister for christmas, but it is having problems that I'm worried about.
First of all, it won't charge through the usb cord hooked up to the computer. It does recognize it in ITUNES but it won't charge. I hooked it up to a wall charger, and it charges fine but it won't hold a charge for more than 10 minutes!!! Any help?

3rd generation iPods don't charge over USB.
If the wall charger is USB, it won't charge the iPod either.
You will need to purchase a Firewire wall charger.

  • Ipod 3rd Gen won't sync

It's been syncing just fine. Now after running the update for Itunes it won't sync at all. Out of 599 songs on the ipod i'd say maybe only 24 are still on my computer or have been bought from the Istore. What can i do, to get 3 new songs onto my Ipod.

  • I have itunes 10.5 already, and i want to get ios 5 but i can't find the option anywhere and my ipod (3rd gen) is fully updated??

    please help!!!!

You can fully trust the itunes software checks: If it says yours is up to date, then it is .
"Up to date " does not necessarily mean you get the latest new OS , but the latest that was made for your device.. and there you are, in 4.2.1. And as every device that runs 4.2.1 as of today and gets that message :
your device can't have iOS4.3 or iOS5 because the hardware wont handle it. You are not one, but two versions behind ( 4.3 is very different from 4.2 and 5.0 is a complete new OS ).
Enjoy the device as long as it does its job. Backup all your apps. Future versions of apps will certainly not run on it any longer as more and more demand 4.3 or 5.0 .
