My iPod 4G volume button is no longer functioning

I have a 4G iPod Touch which I purchased some time in November of 2010. So, it's like, five months out of warranty.
Anyway, I am unable to put the volume up. The button to put the volume down works fine, but the one to put it up doesn't. The volume goes up on it's own as well, so I'm guessing the button on the inside has somehow jammed.
This is really annoying as, it makes listening to music hard. I can use the slider to put the volume to the half way point, but then the sound will randomly go to full on it's own. When I go to put it back down, it will go back up again. But sometimes it doesn't and stays half way.
What can I do about it?

Disregard what I said before.
After prying the cover for the volume button off, I got a flat screw driver and repeatedly pushed the button. I then put the cover back on, and it now functions normally. I guess it may have been dirt causing the problem after all.
Thanks for your answers :).

  • My volume button's no longer working unless headphones are used

    Hi all
The last couple of days, my volume button no longer works (it brings up the ringer box on display, but volume is unchangeable) and the ipod volume slider has disappeared from the screen. I can change the volume in settings, but no sound is being played through the internal speakers when used as an ipod (headphones work fine and volume buttons work with headphone). I still have internal speakers working when a phone call is received or an alarm sounds.
I've tried restoring from backup and hard resets, but neither of these things worked. No new software has been installed since the most recent backup so I'm at a loss what to try next so hoping someone has some suggestions

Thanks Deeco, I tried cleaning the headphone jack but that didn't fix it for me (although I'm not sure leaving it on a radiator all night would generally be a good thing so I didn't try that!!
But I have fixed it though
After the headphone jack cleaning didn't fix it, I cleaned out the charger/docking station connector with a plastic toothpick by running it very gently and carefully either side of the strip of pins - and got out a couple of rather large lumps of fluff - and this seems to have fixed the problem for me.
Hope this helps others fix theirs.

  • SOME BUTTONS ARE NO LONGER FUNCTIONING

I have an older Ipod and some of the buttons on the front are no longer functioning properly,  I cannot change anything just play the songs that have been playing forever.  I have to hit the button many times to get it to accept but eventually it will play.

This worked for me as well.

  • The lock and volume button's no longer work on my iPod Touch 3rd Generation?

I've had my iPod Touch 3rd generation for about two years now, and have had hardly any problems with it... but now the lock button on the top of the ipod and the volume control button on the side of my ipod no longer work. Because the lock button won't work, I cannot reset my iPod. What can I do to fix this?

Assuming that this is not a hardware problem have you tried restoring your iPod? If that does not work then the only thing may be to take it in for repair.

  • Since updating to iOS7.0.4, my iPhone 4S rarely plays text sounds or in-app sounds. Also volume control is no longer functioning using side buttons. When can we expect a fix Apple?

Have done recovery, reset settings, reset content and settings. Nothing changes the fact that its 7.0.4.
Ringtone sound works. Can adjust ringtone sound in settings but it wont play text sounds from in settings. Definitely appears to be a firmware bug.
Can someone from Apple ackowledge this issue please and advise how long till it is fixed? I am missing important texts that i need to be recieving.

    Hi mgoksoy,
    Cheers for your reply.
It doesn't appear to affect every 4S. I don't know if theres specific batches it affects or maybe its location based, but i have a friend who has the same phone as me and theirs did exactly the same thing only after doing the firmware update. I'm pretty confident it is a bug. Looking around on google, it seems like its happening to a lot of other 4S users.
I have done a settings reset, didn't fix it. Did a settings and content reset, didn't fix it. Did a full recovery back to the backup i did when i first purchased it, didn't fix it. None of these things changes the firmware.
I am pretty appalled that apple would release a firmware upgrade with such an obvious problem for 4S users. Did they not test it first? Now i am finding multiple texts from people asking me things hours after they messaged me because the sounds don't work. Not impressed.

  • HT201412 I have a Ipod touch 4th gen. and the volume button or power off button will not work.

My Ipod touch volume button on the side will not work. Niether will my power off button. I just updated to IOS 6.1.2 and now they will not work. It will not even go to the sleep screen?!!! Help

    Try (as best you can):
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I just took my I-Pod touch to a computer repair shop to replace cracked screen and now am told main part of I-Pod needs to be replaced.volume button no longer works, headphone and locking device also no longer working. Even though it all worked when given

I just took my I-Pod touch to a computer repair shop to replace a cracked screen. Told it need the main part to it. They said the volume button, headphone and locking part no longer worked. Told me to pick it up. When I gave it to them all components were working. Said because they weren't able to fix it there was no charge. Don't understand this.

Probably when you dropped, kicked, smashed, threw, or whatever you did to break your screen it also damaged the logic board and the connections to the volume button, headphone jack and sleep button. Happens all the time. Apparently the shop you selected to work on it is not very good so take them off your shopping list.
Then go buy a 5th Generation iPod Touch.

  • IPod Nano 6th Generation Volume Button Issue

The "-" volume button on my iPod Nano 6th generation is stuck in the "on" or depressed position against the case. It looks like the button either is binding against the case, or a spring-like mechanism beneath the button is broken.
Any ideas on how to fix the issue short of taking it in for a service appointment?  Maybe by opening the case?

If you open it or have a 3rd party repair site work on it you will no longer be eligible for an out-of-warranty replacement from Apple at a price of $65/$75 (make a Genius Bar appointment before going.

  • My iPod touch's lock/hold and volume buttons do not work, my WiFi also does

My iPod has done this for quite a while and the hold button and volume button (no matter how hard or long pressed) does not work. When I go to settings and look at the WiFi button it won't even let me touch it and it says "No WiFi" even when there is. My warranty has run out though and I don't want to have to pay a lot to repair it. Any help?

I would first try resetting your iPod:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Next would be restoring it from backup via iTunes in your computer.

  • IPod Nano (6th gen) volume button issue..again

So, just about exactly a year ago, my iPod nano, 6th generation, its volume down button stoped working. the volume up was fine, but the volume down no longer functioned; it no longer turned down the volume and didn't even give that little click you feel when hitting the button when adjusting the volume.  I contacted apple, and luckily it was still under the service warrenty, so I was able to send it in and get a new iPod of the exact same model back, since the report said it was unfixable or whatnot, so that's why they had to give back a new device.
Now, I have had no other problems with it until now, when, again, nearly an exact year later, the same issue happened again.  The volum down button doesn't work, and doesn't even make the little click when pushed.
i checked the status of this iPod, with its new serial number, and now all the warrenty services have expired.  So i guess my question is: has anyone else experienced this trouble? and would this iPod still technically be covered because it was not yet been a full year since I sent it to tech support?
Any info on the issue would be appreciated!

  • The volume button on my ipod touch doesn't work unless headphones are plugged in?

    Hi there,
So I have had this ipod for a while now but just recently it's doing this thing where i can press the side volume buttons but they don't do anything unless the earphones are plugged in.  i have reset it a number of times and had it plugged into my computer to charge it completely and nothing works.   when i go to play music on the ipod without the headphones, the slider doesn't even show up...any suggestions??

Try restoreing the iPOd, first from backup and then to factory defaults /new iPOd if the problem persists.  If you still have the problem then you likely have a defective headphone jack.
In that case I would make an appointment at the Genisu Bar of an Apple store to confirm.
