My iPod cannot be updated! Plz help!
I'm using a 30-GB iPod with Video, bought May 06 in Japan. It can't be updated for 1 month so far. I still can update songs into my iTunes properly, while songs in iTunes can't get into my iPod. I've tried to reset iTunes and iPods in my PCs for several times, but the problem can't be solved. Error message is "The iPod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Can anyone show me how to settle the problem? Thank you guys. Van Anh

Oh, I don't think my iPod's being not updatable due to iTunes 7.0 on Windows XP. The error message "Your iPod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" also appears with my at-home PC which runs original iTunes 6.1 (the Apple running disk went with my iPod). I've come to realize that Folder "Photos" in the iPod may be the reason? I deleted pictures in it once, and since then, I can't add new photos, together with new songs from my iTunes library into iPod. When I double-click the Photos folder, the message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" also appears. How can I fix it? I've reset my iPod but failed to fix the problem. Don't anyone of you meet the same matter? Plz help! Thank you guys.

IPOD CANNOT BE UPDATED ON PC --- HELP!!!
I've got a problem when I try to transfer new songs from itunes onto my ipod shuffle on my pc. The whole thing seems to be working ok, until I get a message saying "Ipod cannot be updated--an unknown error occurred (-36)". What should I do? I've downloaded ipod update, but that hasn't helped. Please get back to me in this forum or email me on [email protected]
Thanks
Russellhi Russell!
"Ipod cannot be updated--an unknown error occurred (-36)".
are you using an itunes version 4.9 or earlier? with versions 5.0.0.35 or greater, that error code usually shows up as a "disk cannot be read from or written to" error.
the same treatments for the "disk cannot be read from or written to" apply to the -36:
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
(indeed, this article used to be called "-36 error when syncing ipod ...")

Hello,
I was updating my playlists and I see that I still have
4.84 GB left on my ipod to fill. Even if I try to add 1 song to my ipod it states: "My ipod cannot be updated because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the selected playlists."
Shouldn't I have enough room for more songs with 4.84GB left? I thank you in advance for anyone's time & help.
Sunny regards,
WilliamAuto update playlist and music. I tried waht you sugested earlier, and it gave me a diferent message. I have it working, I moved one of the folders out of the iPosd_Control and I am able to see the list in iTunes. One of the songs in the folder could have been corrupted. I thank you for your help. I still do not understand the multi folders. This is a good one for anyone else who gets that message.

"ipod cannot be updated...required file in use" error message HELP!
So I just updated my itunes with the new 7.0 and everything works great, except-- every 10 mins or so, I get this error message "The ipod "xxx's ipod" cannot be updated. The required file is in use."
Nothing happens, I just have to click "ok", but its really annoying. And it pops up again in a few minutes.
I seem to remember this happening before on another update but I don't remember what I did.
Anyone else experiencing this or know what to do?
Thanks!!I am having the exact same problem -- Itunes version 7 update seems to have created this issue. I get this error message about every five minutes if my Ipod is plugged into my computer, "Ipod cannot be updated. Required file is in use." Super annoying. I noticed a solution posted on this forum but it doesn't seem to work for Macs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I should know how much i'm syncing!!! anyone know how to help?
Maybe you do, but iTunes obviously has different ideas - you can see that for yourself. And since iTunes is making the decisions...
So - you need to work out which part of your Library has all this extra content that it's trying to Sync.
According to the graphic we can see, your iPod currently has 8.1GB of Music on it. If you look in your iTunes/Library/Music, at the bottom of the screen it shows how much music is in your Library. Is it the same?
Have you by any chance, added another sub-folder into the photos folder that you're using to Sync with your iPod?
If neither of those things, what about the books?
If not - perhaps there is a clue in the number of Apps that appear to have outstanding updates. I can't think why that should be the cause of the problem, but 152 Apps requiring an update does seem rather a lot. Perhaps that's upsetting the applecart. -
IPOD cannot be update - 40 GB Click Wheel
Upgraded Itunes & Ipod to latest software versions and can't synch up ipod with Itunes. Have followed ALL steps to recify...uninstall, empty temp directory, standalone Quicktime, reinstall latest. Install goes fine but when I connect Ipod it begins to update from itunes but after about 9G or 2500 songs it says complete (I have over 7500 songs). When I go to update again I get the error message "The iPOD cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." Please help!
Well it was worth a try...after restoring iPOD, set it up and started auto download from iTunes...once again, everything seemed to be going fine...got up to 2615 songs and it started slowing down while updating ipod and ipod statred making little noises..at 2636 songs it said ipod update complete..my ipod still said do not disconnect so I ejected and still said same thing..no songs updated although it said they had.....reconnected and only 5 songs shoed...clicked on update again and got the message "windows delayed write failed..windows was unable to save all the data for the file G: the data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. please try to save the file elsewhere....the other message that i have been getting is "This ipod Neil's Ipod cannot be updated. ERROR MESSAGE: The IPOD cannot be updated.
Please help!! Have tried everything can think of including, resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling and restoring. ITunes automatically starts downloading when you connect but then only transfers the first 50 or so songs in the library, and then says update complete. When you ask it to then update the IPOD through file menu an error message comes up saying 'The IPOD cannot be updated, the disk could not be read from or written to.' There is no problem with the IPOD, because I have been able to update it via another PC, it just won't update via the laptop even though the ITunes has been set up on the laptop as the ITunes I want to use.
Click wheel Windows XPTo all concerned: There is a new Apple Support Document regarding this error:
-36 or "Disk cannot be read from or written to" error syncing iPod in iTunes
Maybe this helps.

In the iTunes window, when I update my nano ipod, I get an error message "User ipod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." How can I overcome this error message.
Hello there dilip77707,
It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:
'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the very best,

May sound silly I am sorry, new to this. Just got an ipod shuffle and have gone through all troubleshooting suggestions ie: restore ipod, reinstall software etc. Am getting an error: "The ipod "administrator's ipod" cannot be updated. The disc could not be read from or written to". This occurs when I click and drag a playlist from the source section to my ipod in the source section. Getting a wee bit discouraged by reading all the problems associated with this ipod and am hoping for an easy fix to slide past further frustration. Please help. Thank you muchly.
Windows XPGo to the iPod Shuffle Support Page, look around in there, and follow the troubleshooting steps in the article entitled "Can't be written to" or words to that effect.
