My iPod Classic (4th Gen. 40GB) Wont' start up.

I have an old iPod Classic 4th Generation 40gb that I bought on eBay. It has a new battery in it.
My Problem occured when I connect it to my computer. The screen on my iPod says "do not disconnect" with a sign that is blinking which is a regular routine when it is connected to a computer. But it won't show up on my iTunes. I played around with it and can't find the problem so I pulled it out of the USB. It still has the same screen with the do not disconnect sign. So I did the reboot move which i put the ipod on hold, then release, and push and hold the menu and the center button for how many seconds. It did restart but I guess its corrupted now because after seeing the apple logo, it suddenly wants me to log on to apple support. Bottom line is I can't use my iPod anymore. I need help with this since i guess it just corrupted. Can I fox it myself or should i go to an authorized apple service where i can get it fixed?

Do the iPod DiskDiagnostic, as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting, especially if you get high numbers, it mean that the Harddisk need to be replaced.
Assuming it is no longer under warranty, it would be better to send it to a 3rd party iPod service, just google for one near your Area.

IPod Classic 4th gen won't charge

So i got a iPod of ebay and it came with roughly 75% charged, when i plugged it in to my computer it reacted fine, i then reset the iPod to the default settings and it asked my to connect it to a wall plug, not having a firewire on hand i just used my 10 W iPad charger and it booted up fine i then thought i'll leave it to fully charge, i did this ans went off and came back about 1-2 hours later and the screen said "Charged" so i disconnected the iPod and on the screen it actually had less that 75% about 50% now, i was confused to why it wasn't working, so i plugged it in to my computer and it worked fine but i noticed that it said that it was fully charged in the top corner, i put some music on it and my brother came with his firewire charger so i thought this will react to it the battery is no on about 15% i try my 10 W charger in his iPod classic 4th gen and it worked fine. so my iPod then dies and i plug it in to my 10 watt charger and nothing happens, i plug it in to the firewire and it comes up with the low battery symbol on a loop, after reading many online articles i decide the battery is busted and get another battery, i get the battery and i change it over no problem. iPod boots up fine, however it still does not charge when connected to 5W 10W it just says "charged" when it is not and when i connect it to the 12W firewire nothing happens. Does any one have any ideas whats going on? Could it be the logic board?
I should also say my brothers iPod classic 4th gen works fine on all 3 chargers plus computers.

My friend gave me his old 4th gen ipod so i could put my songs in it, but the only thing that appears is the apple logo. I can't seem to get to the menu. I tried to reset it, but it didn't do anything.

So I'm assuming you have plugged it into your computer or an outlet to charge? How about trying to let the battery completely drain, and then reconnect it to a power source to charge. Then try reconnecting it your computer and restoring it via iTunes.
Another potential solution is to try and force the iPod into Disk Mode as describe in the Apple support document below. If you are able to do that, try to restore the iPod via iTunes, or completely reformatting it.

IPod classic 4th gen won't charge from mains

My iPod classic wont charge from the mains I've tried different cables with no luck. It charges when I connect to my laptop and when it's in a docking station.

That seems to point to an issue with the adapter. Is this an Apple branded adapter? Have you tried plugging it into a different wall outlet? Do you have another iPod you could connect to the adapter to see if the issue is persistent across multiple devices?

Ipod classic 4th gen. Won't charge with USB but will with firewire

Please help. I keep my old ipod running through my car charger. This charger broke recently and I replaced. The new won't charge the ipod. I've plugged the ipod into the mac and pc, using different leads. Nothing. The apple logo pops up and then a wee battery with an exclamation appears and disappears.
If I plug it into mains using the charger which came with it it will charge (but it won't hold the charge, this I am used to, hence why it's always plugged into me car) BUT if I plug it in using a USB to ipod cable it won't work.
Very confused.
Can anyone help?

IPod Touch (4th gen) wouldn't start after overheating from an after market wall charger

My son used an after market iPod charger and after a few minutes after he unplugged the cord the iPod wouldn't start. More than that: it was getting hot even without beeing hooked to the charger. After 30 min was back to normal temperature but it wouldn't start.
Any hope to get it running again? The On/Off + Home reset didn't worked.

- Synced media like apps and music are no included in the backup that iTunes makes. If that media is not in the iTunes library it will not be on the iPod after restoring from backup or updating.
- Redownload your purchased by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Then try restoring from backup. If you have a backup made when the iPod was update then you should get your apps data back. Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if by the date of the backup it would included the data.

My iPod seems to be defective. I just upgraded from my last iPod classic (4th gen) to the newest model for more space, so I now all the tips and tricks to reset and restore a malfunctioning iPod. I have tried everything: checked the hold button, reset it, connected it to various adaptors, connected it to the computer, but nothing seems to work. IPod classic 5th gen. with sad face goes into disk mode but wont register in itunes

I have an iPod classic 5th gen. A while ago it stopped working and the sad faced iPod started showing up. i've tried putting it into disk mode but when i do it wont pop up into itunes like it should and as soon as i unplug it the sad face appears again. is there anyway to fix it or is it done?

Btw, there's no such thing as a "4th generation 20gb classic." Your iPod is a 4th gen and not an iPod classic which is a completely different model.

My friend just started having this issue with his netbook where his iPod Touch will not be detected at all not even under My Computer. It will charge the device however it will not sync.
Before he had the iTunes Wifi Sync on, but it wasn't really working either for some odd reason.
On booting iTunes I noticed it kept coming up with the need to downgrade to be compatible for iTunes to run probably. I assume the latest version of iTunes cannot naturally run on Windows 7 Starter with downgrading to a lower compatiblity likely either it downgraded to Vista or XP compatibility.
I was wondering with it was an iTunes sync service was not turned on, but another friend had brought her iPhone and right away that device appeared in iTunes so it appears to be a issue with the iPod itself. We swapped usb cables in hopes that his older more worn cable may have been the issue, but still not luck.
We had used all of the following listed from this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538. As well as another which I can't seem to find that had about 15 items to try.
So basically it doesn't show up as even a usb device in the "Device and Printers" window or as a device under "My Computer".

IPod Touch 4th Gen starts from the same song

I recently updated my iPod Touch 4th gen, 32 GB to iOS 6.1.2, from 5.1.1. I skipped iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1. After the update, I noticed that when I play music from my "All Music" list, my iPod always starts on the same song, no matter what song I listened to last. Sometimes it starts at a song that's farther down the list, but I haven't been able to figure out what circumstances caused it to start at that song. To make things more confusing, once it chooses a different song, it always starts from that song.
I have confirmed that Shuffle and Repeat are both OFF. This issue occurs whether I have recently charged/synced my iPod or not. It also occurs after I perform a hard restart on the iPod. I have not tried restoring it, because I have not had time to dedicate the several hours it would take to re-install iOS and copy all of my stuff back onto it.
My computer is running Windows 7, 32-bit. My iTunes is version 11.0.2.26.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone has questions relating to this issue, I'd be happy to answer them.

I didn't mention this in my initial post because I didn't think it was relevant, but the Home button on my iPod doesn't work. I've been using the virtual home button provided by turning Assistive Touch on.
I did try the first solution you suggested, but nothing happened. I'll make another post when I try the second method.
On a side note, and if it makes any difference, the device in question is not a phone. It's an iPod Touch.

Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Ive tried resetting it but doesnt seem to help.

Try rooboting the computer.
Try different cable and USB port
