My iPod Classic is suddenly asking me to "Enter Code to Unlock". Is there a default?

I have been letting my 8 year old son use my old iPod. It's the the old classic video iPod, 30GB, software version is 1.3 and says it's up to date. Serial number is 4V544C1WTXK (I don't know if that matters or not). He has been listening to music and playing games on it for months now without a problem. And it has never asked for a code to unlock it. I have never set one. He may have by accident but does not know a code either.
Is there a default code to unlock it? If not is there a way to reset the code? I can't use the iPod at all now. I just replaced the battery in it so I really need to get it working.
Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Okay so I just did a factory restore. It seems to be working fine now although I lost everything stored on it.

Thank you for the question. It sounds like you might have the Screen Lock enabled on your iPod classic. I recommend reviewing the following steps to unlock your iPod classic:
When iPod is locked, the Enter Code screen continues to display until one of the following occurs:
You enter the correct combination
Once you enter the correct combination, the previous state appears.
You force iPod to sleep
Press and hold the Play/Pause button to put it to sleep. When you wake it, the Enter Code screen appears.
iPod goes to sleep by itself
After 2 minutes of inactivity, iPod will go to sleep by itself. When you wake it, the Enter Code screen appears.
You connect iPod to a computer
When you connect your iPod to any high-power USB port, it displays the "Do not disconnect" message. iPod will behave identically to an unlocked iPod that's connected to a computer. For example, you can copy data to and from it if it's in disk mode, and manage its music and photos in iTunes.
Important: Apple representatives cannot unlock an iPod if you forget your combination. If you can't unlock your iPod and you don't have access to the primary computer, your only option is to restore the iPod, which will erase all music and data.

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

A week ago i plugged my iPod into my computer and it didnt get recognised. So I unplugged it and it got froze on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I tryed restarting it. But it was just froze on this screen. I came to it today to see if it had unfroze. Well now its asking me for a code to unlock it. I havent set a code or anything. Is there a way to get my iPod back to normal?

Connect iPod to the computer you normally use it with (the first one that the iPod synced with) and open iTunes. Then disconnect the iPod from the computer and it should no longer be locked.
You can also restore the iPod.

I have bought an (admittedly used) iPod classic 80GB on New Year's this year.For the better part of this month it was working beautifully.I was lucky that I got it.But just a week ago,it started bugging out.It would mount on iTunes and I would drag and drop music and videos on it but could only do it one at a time or it froze.This continued on for a couple days then finally yesterday it won't show on itunes at all.I tried resetting it,changing usb ports but it still wouldn't show except on plugged devices on ''Computer'' and on Finder (I have been trying to make it show on my macbook as well with no luck either)
I ever resorted to trying to remove completely and reinstall iTunes.still won't show and unfortunately for some reason whenever I try to reinstall it now on my windows 7 it says something about it ''missing a key'' and stopping the installation.
Can anyone offer me any solutions?I am growing pretty desperate here as the last time i managed to do a ''drag and drop'' to put my videos and music in it,any movie I dropped into the iPod,even though it shows on the device,it won't play at all -.-

I am still having the problem. I have noticed a pattern to the seemingly random freezes.
The iPod is stopping to Sync at almost predictable points during the sync. The first stoppage occurs around the 1.9GB part of the sync. This has not always been the same file but it is always around the same place.
When I sync in small chunks the freeze occurs at almost the same place every time. As soon as it freezes, iTunes is toast and the entire computer needs to be restarted.
Anyways, the freeze happens around every 2GB's of data transferred. It does not have to be in one chunk, it is almost like it is happening on the iPod. Like the iPod is kicking itself out of the sync at certain points along it's hard drive or something. Once it freezes and I restart the computer, I can transfer another 2 GB before it freezes again... then restart, repeat. Finally I was able to load up the 14.8 GB I had in my iTunes. Several hours later... not sure if I should take the iPod back or not. If it is the iPod and that fixes the problem great... but if it is my machine, I get another 3-4 hours syncing and restarting my computer. Wheeee!

Are you using a Mac or PC? If it's a PC, have you tried changing the iPod's drive letter or plugging the iPod into a different high powered USB 2.0 port?

Ipod classic 160 suddenly locked itself and I cant unlock it

My ipod has the lock symbol on the screen (it just suddenly appeared one day) and I've tried everything I can find to unlock it. I've tried resetting with the menu and centre button, this does nothing. I've tried restoring from itunes, it does this ok, but is still locked.
Does anyone have any ideas to help?

I am using Firefox 19.0. While on Ebay if I go to "Ask seller a question", you have to enter a random generated security code in a box. In the past this worked fine, but in the past year or so has quit working with Firefox and several versions of it. The process works fine with IE8, so it must be associated with Firefox. The only way I can leave a message is the fact that you can choose to have the code read aloud. If I do this and enter the code it works fine, but not if you enter the code printed on the screen. I have tried deleting history/cookies as suggested by Ebay help, but didn't help

Hi, I recently updated my itunes software with ver.8 and since then my 80 GB Classic ipod does not show up in itunes or in my computer. Hence, I am not able to sync my itunes. When I connect my ipod it just shows "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" and just freezes there. Pls help?

Ive googled this problem and so many ipod classic owners have asked.. solutions ive tried: the 5r's, updating drivers, It managed to connect once, but now it wont. My ipod normally works fine on my PC, XBOX, laptop and Mac.. but sometimes, unpredictably, it wont be recognized by anything apart from the mac. For a month it would not connect at all and I took it in to an Apple store where they told me it works fine. Its not my PC.. its up to date, and theres no reason why it doesnt work on my XBOX because some times it does.. last night it did, today its broken again, I suspect tomorrow it may work. This is SO frustrating!!
I have alot of experience in PC's and normally I can solve a problem by process of elimination, updating and reinstalling, but in this case.. everything seems fine. My only idea is that maybe its my Sync cable?? Which also makes no sense because it generally connects fine on the mac - and, why would a sync cable be unpredictable.. surely it either works or it doesnt. HELP PLEASE!!

IPod classic does not show up in iTunes or on imac desktop

I have a 80gb Classic Ipod. 2 days ago it stopped showing up in iTues or on my desktop when I connected it to the mac. On the iPod it shows "connected" and every so often the display on the ipod shows moves to indicate it is syncing but nothing happens on the mac or itunes. The only place the iPod shows is under Disk Utility.
I have used different ports and usb cables.
Help... I can't get my lovely new tunes on my iPod ....
p.s. I have an iPhone 4 and it connects and syncs with no problem.

ITunes 9 has corrupted my iPod Classic

So here is my sorry story - please let me know if you have had similar symptoms and if you have found a solution.
I have a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard. I recently upgraded iTunes to iTunes version 9.0.2 and attempted to synchronise my iPod Classic (not sure which version I have - it's about 2 years old if that) whereby I was sent down all sorts of nonsense alleyways by Apple as iTunes told me that my iPod was corrupt and needed to be restored etc.
I have uninstalled every aspect of iTunes 9 from my mac and have installed iTunes 8 instead, as I didn't seem to have any problems with that before (lucky me? or better software?). I have verified and erased my iPod then restored it in iTunes.
I then thought perhaps I ought to manually manage my music as the auto-sync was what seemed to start this whole nightmare in the first place. This all goes well until I reach around 12GB when the iPod starts crunching and iTunes freezes to transfer. I am then unable to stop the transfer and unable to eject the iPod from Finder.
All that I can assume from this and from reading these discussion boards is that my iPod has been irreparably damaged by iTunes 9.
There are theories being expounded on these boards that this is all an elaborate ploy by Apple in order to capture the Christmas market - what more incentive do you need for a new shiny iPod than the fact your perfectly good one is not defunct? I'm not sure I buy into that as the negative publicity is surely more damaging than a few iPod sales. However this is massively negligent on Apple's part if iTunes is in fact the cause of all of this destruction.
Whilst the software licence agreement purports to exclude all liability for any damage caused by such software, in the UK this is overridden by the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which restrict the degree to which a company can exclude liability for loss caused and which imply a term into the contract which states that the goods must be of satisfactory quality. Whilst Apple could potentially have limited itself by clearly pointing out that the software is not suitable for iPod Classic owners they have not done this therefore to my mind there is a clear case for asking Apple to provide its now disillusioned and iPod-less customers with adequate compensation for their loss.
I am going to progress this with Apple and will post back here as to how I get on. Meanwhile, if any other UK customers would like to add anything please do as it seems that the voice of millions may be what Apple needs to do something about this.

My Ipod Classic wouldn't connect with my iMac after I updated to iTunes 9. Long story short, I discovered it was a problem with the software version on the iPod; not so much iTunes 9. I think this is why only some of us are suffering this problem. The catch is, you need a successful sync to update the iPod software.
As others have tried, resetting the iPod numerous times and trying it on other computers with iTunes 9 didn't work.
If you happen to have a second computer with iTunes 8.2 or earlier, you can use that, but if you are like 99% of people with the same version of iTunes on all computers, you need to:
1. Uninstall iTunes 9
2. Install iTunes 8.2
3. Update your iPod software version
4. Reinstall iTunes 9
In detail for Mac (Windows will have it's own similar steps):
1. Uninstall the iTunes 9 application as far as step 13 on this help file http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
(this will remove the application, but leave the music and your libraries intact)
2. Download and install iTunes 8.2. I found a site with an old version using a google search http://en.kioskea.net/telecharger/telecharger-241-itunes-for-mac
3. After version 8.2 is installed, start iTunes by holding down the OPTIONS key on your keyboard and use one click (don't double-click) on your iTunes icon (if it doesn't work, just quit iTunes, and try again...you will get it eventually). A window will pop-up enabling you to create a new library. Do that, and give it a random name (you won't use this library again).
4. iTunes will start (without any of your original library showing, but don't panic; it's still there), and your iPod should now connect. Choose not to transfer any files, or authorisation, however, take the option to update the iPod software.
5. Once the software is updated and has restarted, eject the iPod (no need to complete the sync)
6. Perform a normal mac software update to reinstall iTunes 9.
7. When starting iTunes 9 for the first time after reinstalling, hold down the OPTION key on your keyboard and use one click on the iTunes icon; pick the CHOOSE LIBRARY option. Open your original library that has all your music, and you should be back to where you want to be; your iPod syncing as normal. Next time you open iTunes, it will open to the correct library. The use of the OPTION key is only needed the first time.
8. Hopefully, stop banging your head against your desk.

Anybody knows why my iPod 160 GB suddenly won't sync my Contacts anymore?

It was working alright before I "upgraded" to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9... suddenly I cannot sync my contacts into my iPod (a VERY valuable feature!)... I have been to MacStores and they have no idea... any solutions out there?

I have a similar problem. Everything went fine, but after installing Snow and Itunes 9.1 My ipod classic 80 GB did not sync Contacts and Calendars anymore. There is also a problem with the battery suddenly.
After having fully charged and I open music after 2 minutes it completely goes blank telling me there is a very low battery status. I do not know if this is by accident or it also hve to do with all the hardware problems people encounter with the iTunes 9.0
Does anybody have the same problem with battery?
