My ipod classic is syncing fast, up to song 267 then goes VERY slowly almost non moving?

Hi,
My ipod is snyching fine and very fast up to song 269 then synching VERY VERY slowly, like a song every minute or two.
Any ideas?

For starters, can you do the iPod Disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.

  • IPod Classic not syncing past say ~500 songs, -50, -69, -1404 etc.

OK So I have the Ipod Classic 120GB model. I've had issues with it before, mainly after the first time I accidentally took the iPod out when it wasn't done syncing. Anyway the 2 or 3 times my library got wiped I was able to get it back (process of finding which songs were causing the sync to fail and reformatting iPod)
Anyway, a few weeks ago I was trying to give my brother some of my songs and I had used a program for my older ipod (a 5G Ipod Video 30GB) I'd used successfully in the past to copy the library to my computer called CopyTrans or something like that.
I tried it with the 6G and it got halfway done then the iPod froze or just failed, my brother got no songs on his computer (running XP) and my iPod got wiped. I wasn't mad since I figured I'd just restore it (running iTunes 10 on Windows 7).
It's been about a month and I have not been able to get my whole library on my iPod. I've tried reformatting under every setting, numerous restores, trying different iPod USB cables (for some reason my older one with the side release buttons works better at times, the others sync to fast and just freeze and fail sometimes).
My iPod will begin syncing usually fine, until it gets around ~500 songs or gets to certain songs then it will display Connected and just sit there (on iTunes 8-9 the whole iTunes would just freeze) iTunes 10 seems to keep running and the iPod section just freezes and for not as long, it usually comes back within 3-4 min, but with error codes and not syncing everything I asked it too.
I've even tried unchecking and converting the songs that mess up (Create an MP3/AAC version) which seemed to be working at first but now is not and I have numerous copies of songs in my Lib.
Any help is appreciated? Should I take it to an Apple Store? Is there any other methods to try or is my HD pretty much shot.

*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • IPod Classic only syncs part of my songs, then grinds to a halt slowly

    Hi all,
My iPod Classic (80 GB, almost 3 years old) and I are having beef. Every time I connect it to iTunes it starts syncing just fine, but then after X amount of songs it all of a sudden 'hangs' for a while and then pretends to continue at the gruelingly slow pace of about 1 song per 10 minutes. Eventually it stops all together and gives me the following error messages (excuse any bad translations, it's from Dutch):
    * "Copying to the iPod failed. Disk can't be read from or written."
    * "iTunes can't copy song X to the iPod because the file can't be read or written."
It's a different song every time. After that iTunes completely freezes, the cursor beachballs to infinity and beyond and I have no choice but to just brutally disconnect the iPod. If I'm lucky there's some music on there, but not always. I now only sybc 1 measly playlist so he can manage it... Oh and the covers & songs are a mismatch (can be amusing when Stephen Fry's face shows up next to a QOTSA song).
Also I've noticed that at the point of no return when the syncing slows, I hear some clicking and revving inside the iPod.. Tell me doctor, is the end nigh? But he's hardly three years old and my most beloved possession!
    Tried so far:
    * reverting to older iTunes
    * updating software
    * complete reset of the iPod

I have a theory that it's tied to Snow Leapord and/or iTunes, probably something Apple did to disable Palm Pre phones from being able to sync with iTunes. I've never seen that confirmed though, so it might nto be. All I know is I've been having this problem for a long time. I just tried iTunes 9.2.1 on my Mac hoping Apple had finally fixed it, but alas they didn't.
The solution I found? Get a PC and find an old version of iTunes. You give up some of the newer so-called features, and you've got to deal with a Windows box for your library, but at least the iPod will sync.

In other words, no. You don't need another iTunes Library for your new iPod
Another iTunes Library, that's only if someone elses music is mixed in with yours and you want to create another Windows user account with their music in it.
The iTunes Library is the master vault containing all your content, from there you create playlists or smart playlists specially tailored for the smaller iPod's storage requirements.
For instance if the iPod can hold only 2,000 songs, then you create a smart playlist based upon those rules/limitation. Plus what type of music you like.
You have a incredible degree of control with smart playlists, they update automatically so you only set the conditions for what goes into them. Including content from other created playlists and smart playlists.
Then, when you hook up the smaller iPod, it has it's own sync options, "all of your music and playlists" or "only select playlists"  So you use the second option to select just the smart playlist you tailored for the new iPod.
When you hook up the iPod Classic, only it's sync options are used, not the new iPod ones.
I hope I explained it better this time.

  • TS1425 I cannot eject my ipod classic after sync with i-tunes on my pc. It states some of the files are being used by other applications. What does this mean? How can I get it to eject?

I cannot eject my new ipod classic after sync with i-tunes on my pc due, it states, to open files being used by another application. What does this mean? How can I get my ipod to eject?

If it's a one-time "glitch," you can try restarting your computer with the iPod still connected.  Try ejecting again after the restart.
If the problem recurs, you may have a process running (other than iTunes) that is accessing the iPod's storage.  When connected, the iPod's "disk" is like other mounted volumes.  This process may be some type of utility that continously monitors your mounted volumes for security reasons, such as to prevent access by malware.
If you know of such a program that you have running in the background, there may be a setting to exclude your iPod's disk.

  • ITunes will wipe my iPod classic after sync

I have an 8th Generation iPod classic 160gb. I have recently had the problem of when I would attempt to sync my iPod, it would sync most of the music, but then would throw error (-50) or error (-69). Upon resyncing my iPod, it would give the same error, but this time it would completely wipe my iPod, and force me to restore it.
I have restored it multiple times, I have reinstalled itunes (11.0.2.26), and still have the problem.
I have also run the diagnostics (hard reset iPod then hold the select button and the << button) and it has given me the following for HDSMARTDATA:
    Retracts: 11
    Reallocs: 13976
    Pending Sectors: 2400
    PowerOn hours: 254
    Start/Stops: 17457
    Temp: Current 35c
    Temp: Min 66c
    Temp: Max 255c
I have also taken my iPod to my local Apple Store, and they were unable to do anything besides restore the iPod, which I have already done on multiple occasions.
Does anyone have further insight into what is going on?

Those 2,400 pending reallocations are a bad sign. Add that to 13,976 sectors that have already been reallocated, and the corrupt thermal data, and I think it is safe to say your classic is toast.

My iPod Classic is synced with an old iTunes account.  How can I transfer this music to my new iTunes account?

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.

Either that, or try another USB port. Bear in mind that your iPod will only charge when plugged into a high power USB port, though it will sync when plugged into high or low power ports.

  • IPod Classic stopped sync with new iTunes

Once iTunes went to version 11 my iPod Classic stopped syncing.  My iPod Touch will sync.  I prefer my Classic though.  It is recognized by iTunes, starts the first step of the sync process but that shuts down and doesn't sync.  It doesn't freeze my machine just won't launch the sync process.  My library is on my iPod from the last time it would sync, but anything I've bought since won't load to the device.  I ran the diagnostic and it fails at the end saying no device found, which is weird since it appears in my iTunes, tells me how much audio and files I have and reflects that I have 16GB available.  I've tried tons of the tips on here, changed settings, checked and unchecked all kinds of boxes, changed USB ports, etc., and nothing has worked.  Has anyone else had this issue since the v.11 series of iTunes came out?

  • Reformatted iPod Classic Stops Syncing in the Middle - Error Message

So my iPod got corrupted. I clicked reformat in iTunes, it didn't work. I went to disk utility, repaired the disk, then went to iTunes, reformatted it again, and everything went well. BUT - then it started syncing all my music, and about halfway through I get an error message that says "the iPod couldn't be read or written to." This happens every time I reformat the iPod with iTunes now. What do I do? Any ideas?

OK Here's how I ended up solving it, after reading the article above:
My iPod always stopped syncing on that same song. So I just deleted it, and eveyrthing else went smoothly. Done. Go on your ipod, see where it stopped syncing your library, and delete the next song, that should work.
