My ipod classic just froze, please help!

My ipod classic was working perfectly up until about 10 minutes ago, when it froze up and now it won't let me do ANYTHING. My computer doesn't even recognize that I've plugged it in! I'm so lost, please help me!
So my ordeal is over, thank the stars. To anyone who's having the same issue I just had, here's what you do:
   1. Switch the hold/lock button on the top lefthand corner of your ipod on and then back off
   2. Press and hold the center and menu buttons down simultaneously until the Apple logo appears
   3. Your ipod should shut off and restart after this, and work as fine as it did before

I am having a similar problem at the moment. My ipod is a 20g and fairly new. It has been skipping through all of the songs as though they can't be played. I have soft reset it on numerous occasions and most of the time it has worked. But now I have reset it through itunes for about the fifth time and it won't work. All I have on screen now is the apple symbol and I can't get anywhere. I have updated itunes and reset my ipod after removing all of the music. It seems to be corrupted somehow. Is there any software I can use to wipe it or possibly defrag it other than what is available through itunes?
My computer can recognise the ipod but itunes won't.

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to restore it and instead get the red X symbol, it's a very good indication of a damaged hard drive inside of your iPod. This means you'll need to take or send your iPod in for repair or replacement.

  • Ipod classic just froze

    battery is 1/4 full
i plugged in the usb, and removed the usb about 5 seconds later.
the ipod is frozen at the last playback stage it was at before i turned it off last
none of the buttons are responding, the lock button doesnt do anything, if i stick it up to my ear a very quite whirring sound is coming from it
plugging in the usb gives me the windows usb-detected sound, but itunes doesnt see it, and my computer doesn't see it as a disk drive
    'elp ??????

didn't realise removing headphones did anything, I'll bear that in mind next time.
overnight I let it discharge with the screen on. In the morning is displayed 'please charge'
it charged for about 1 minute, then came up 'ok to disconnect' straight away, and wouldn't charge any more.
but i could now get at the menu.
    I usually have
    playlist, album, extras, settings
    from my main menu.
it had lost my "playlist" entry. so i re enabled that from the settings.
all my music and playlists etc are still there. then i reset factory settings just for good luck.
At this point i have a barely charged ipod which seems alive, but doesn't want to charge any more.
for good luck i put the hold button to "on".
all of a sudden it started charging, and right now i seem to be back with an apparently healthy ipod, which is charging thro the usb as normal.
itunes and windows explorer does not seem to see the device right now, i'll worry about that once i have a charged ipod.
I didnt know about the two button combo and lock - will for next time

  • Ipod classic problem.  please help

Ok. Heres the problem. I recently bought a new Imac (the 1200 dollar one). Like.. two weeks ago. I pluged my ipod into it and it seemed to work, and lately iv been noticing that sometimse when i plug it in it goes to the "Do not disconnect" scren, but it doesnt register on my itunes. And when i unplug it (granted its without ejecting) it freezes in the do not disconnect screen until it dies. Then i have to re-charge it after it completely dies out and then it works again. It's froze up twice in the past week. And im wondering if this has anything to do with going from a windows XP to a Mac OS X operating system. And if theres anything i can do to fix the problem?

    Hi unlamo14,
Yes, restoring does wipe you ipod clean, but I think you have to. But before doing that, go here and look at Zevoneer's post to transfer your ipod's contents to your Mac.

After saving your music, I suggest you restore your ipod.
And the next time your ipod freezes, reset it instead of waiting for it to die. (Flip HOLD swirch on, then off. Press MENU + CENTER button at the same time for about 6 secs. until the screen goes dark. Sometimes, you have to do this multiple times.)

Make sure it is charged for about 10min using the adapter, then connect in recovery mode, explained in this article:

  • My iPod Classic just shows the apple

Broken. iPod Classic just shows apple. Then tells me to go to support. Red x n circle.

Bring it in to Apple for a checkup, most likely the battery is near dead, or your charging cable is damage.
Can you get another USB cable, and connect the iPod to a High Power USB 2.0 port, and leave it charging for 4 hours (The charging sign (lightning) must be ON the iPod display)
Do not connect it to any USB Hub, as these don't provide enough power for iPod charging.
After fully charging the iPod, do the disk diagnostic to see the condition of the Hardisk. refer to this post by tt2.

Ok so my ipod 160gb froze, I'm guessing its cuz i tried to sync it and iTunes froze so i disconected it. Anyway, I've tried wiggling the hold button, holding down the center and play/pause button. Nothing is working. I've even tried plugging it back in but nothing is working. Also, iTunes wont sync the stuff I just got off the iTunes store. My computer recognises it, but itunes doesnt. I tried to update my software, but it wounldnt let me. It would stop halfway through the download. Can someone please help me out! Thanks.

Turn the Hold switch on , then off again and press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons for ten seconds.
"Wiggling it" will not work, unless it's a new form of dance

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indiacte a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
