My ipod classic keeps freezing when I plug it in, why?

I have an ipod classic that I bought off of Amazon about month ago. When I first plugged it into my computer to put songs on it, it worked fine, but now whenever I plug it into my laptop it freezes. I have to let it die everytime and this is becoming ridiculous. I even tried closing out all other open windows on my computer so that iTunes is the only thing that's open and it still freezes. I am severely ****** off and I feel like I've wasted $250 dollars. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

Hello Briannat1995,
It sounds like your iTunes application is becoming unresponsive when you plug your iPod Classic into your computer. I recommend trying the troubleshooting steps from the article named:
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • IPod classic 160GB freezing when plugged in

    Hi,
My new iPod classic started freezing when plugge in after the night, for example - it needs a restore, then works fine. Any ideas?
    Thank you for your help

Yikes!, it may means it is the iPod Classic firmware 2.0.4, that is hanging up the USB Host controller, which freezes your whole Computer.
Could be a partially updated firmware 2.0.4, (so kind of corrupted)
    Can you
    1. Open in finder <yourname>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/
    2. Remove the .ipsw and .ipsw.signature for the version you are wanting to drop, in this case, 2.0.4
    3. Open iTunes and in Preferences uncheck automatic check for updates.
    4. Connect iPod and select restore. It will ask you if you want to check for newer update. Select Yes. All files will be removed and it will have to resync the entire library but it worked.
PS: try and do this in Diskmode.

  • IPod Classic keeps freezing...what do I do?

My iPod Classic keeps freezing. It still plays music, but then the screen freezes and won't let me command the device until the backlight switches off. I noticed it's got a bit worse since I bought 'Bush' iPod speakers to play my music out loud through my iPod. What do I do? It's getting annoying.

    Hi Candyfornia,
I think you must restore your iPod (with iTunes) to solve your problem...

  • My iPod keeps freezing when i plug it into my computer.

When i plus my iPod into my computer, my iPod and computer freezes up. I haven't charged it or used it in a few months, so i'm not sure if that may be the case, but can you please help me?

My old 2nd-Gen Nano was showing a split screen too; I ended up just getting a new iPod. It started that split screen after the Click Wheel had stopped working.
I know this won't help much but that's what I had to do.

  • IPod Classic 120Gb freezes when connecting

I have a new iPod Classic 120 GB and about every other time when I connect to my PC to sync the iPod freezes. I have to reset the iPod in order to get it to work again. Is there a fix for this?

I have this same issue, it seemed to start with the last firmware upgrade. My 160 Classic is several months old. I sync at least once a day, usually at night. I listen to it in the car to and from work, listen to it all day at work, never any problems. I come home, plug it into my iMac and the iPod freezes. I reset it, it syncs just fine. Lather, rinse, repeat the following day. Maybe one day out of ten it will work, but almost always I have to reset it in order to sync. I've tried connecting the cable directly to the mac, to a hub, with and without the dock. Same story. I am at a loss.
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • My 7th generation 160 g iPod classic keeps freezing, I've only had it for 3 months?

This iPod was ordered brand new 3 months ago, however it keeps freezing and locking up when I try to scroll through menus or switch songs. I would really like this problem to be fixed. How do I go about this?

    Try the Hard Reset
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

Do  the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted by tt2,

If you have high numbers on the first 5 items, better bring back to Apple Store for a replacement.

  • My new ipod classic keeps freezing

I got it for christmas and have been looking after it. The screen and buttons consistantly freezes at least once a week. I don't know what triggers it besides that it only happens when I'm doing something with it. So it dosn't happen when it's in my pocket. The screen dosn't shut off or dim. When I plug it into itunes my computer registers that a usb device was plugged in with a sound effect but itunes dosn't communicate with it. The only way I found to fix it is to wait until the battery drains and then charge it again. It's a classic 160 gig. I don't know why it would be broken because I've never dropped it or bumped it and because it's only a month old it's very dissapointing.

Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing multiple issues with your iPod classic. To troubleshoot, it may be helpful to run through the following assistant:

  • Why does my ipod classic keep freezing my itunes account

so i have had my ipod classic for a few years not and i love it. but lately i cannot plug it into itunes without it freezing my itunes all up. i have tried resetting it, ive re downloaded itunes and everything i try doesnt work. i dont know what to do. i really dont want to have to go buy a new one.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3784647?start=0&tstart=0
If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Why does my iPod touch keep freezing when I attempt to turn off iCloud Keychain in the settings?

Everytime I try to turn off iCloud Keychain, my iPod's
Screen freezes and automatically turns iCloud Keychain back on. I really don't want ICloud Keychain and it has been a while since I tried to turn it off.

My warrenty is expired i guess, i got it in 2009 June and then got a new one cuz that broke in december 2009 then ANOTHER one in 2010 of june ahahah so shouldnt i get a new warrenty everytime i get a new ipod. But im scared to cuz my stuff never backs up on itunes -__- (thats why i am scared to restore it)

  • Ipod Classic 80gb Freezes on Apple Logo

I have an Ipod classic 80gb. When I plug my Ipod into my computer the Ipod freezes on the Apple logo on screen. The only way to get it back is to go into disk mode and then restore the ipod on itunes but it doesn't fix it permanently. As soon as I plug it back in or it resets it does the same thing. If i leave it unplugged for a while then it will come back on like a reset ipod asking to select language and it is then a factory reset ipod with nothing on it. When I plug it back in so i can upload songs it does the same thing again. Please help

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

  • ITunes freezes when I plug my iPod in. Please HELP

I have a 4G 8GB iPod touch, and it hasn't been synced into iTunes for about 2 months now because iTunes always freezes when I plug my iPOd into it.(I have iTunes 10.1 or which ever one is the latest version and it just freezes). Can anyone help or has the same problem?

    I have the same problem
I managed to get it to work this way on Windows 7 SP1 X64
    Itunes 10.2
    Ipod 2g
    Open Itunes
    Open Task manager
    Click on process tab
    Connect Ipod 2g
Swap back to applications tab and check for not responding for Itunes
    If Itunes goes not responding
Disconnect and reconnect Ipod, while viewing process tab
It may take a few times
