My ipod classic no longer appears in itunes on my mac, but it does appear in finder

I have tried all the steps at this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3540
As well as those suggested by turingtest2 at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17776595#17776595 (Check your ipod with Diagnostics mode)
I had:
Retracts: 495
Reallocs: 11
Pending sectors: 0
So I figure that there isn't a problem with my drive. But then the next step requires you to open itunes and access the ipod summary. But obviously this is useless as my ipod does not show in itunes. Though it does in Finder.
I have tried reinstalling iTunes, the apple mobile device drive, I've deleted the com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig and AppleMobileDevice.kext files, restarting my Mac disconnecting my ipod and quitting itunes in between to no avail.
This is ridiculously frustrating.
Other ipods load in my itunes so I'm assuming it is a problem with my ipod not my mac or usb port or whatever else I've been advised to check a million times over.
Help, please. I beg you.

Hi there,
No I didn't. Someone suggested in another thread that my iPod was registering as a disk instead of a device, so if I removed my iPod as a disk on Disk Utility then it would reload etc. and show up in iTunes. Which it didn't, and instead just cleared all my music (16,000 songs).
So frustrating.
Hope if you have the same problem you are able to find a better solution!

  • TS1363 iPod classic no longer recognised in iTunes (v11)

I have an 80gb iPod classic that, since I upgraded iTunes to the latest version in December 2012, no longer gets recognised within iTunes, so I cannot sync it anymore.
I am running a PC on windows 7, with iTunes v11 (the latest version as I have removed and replaced it several times in the last 24 hours).
My PC does recognise the iPod in "My Computer".
I have spent hours trying all sorts of Apple Troubleshooting guides, to no avail.
First I tried the reset: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Then I went through each of these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
I've also tried various different apple USB cables, and different USB ports on my PC.
My iPhone 4 connects no problem.
My iPod Classic used to connect no problem until I downloaded the latest / current version of iTunes.
Other than not being able to sync my ipod with itunes, the ipod works and behaves totally normal...
    VERY frustrating. PLEASE help.
    Thanks.

  • Ipod Classic No Longer Synchs after Itunes Moved to New Computer

I successfully restored my itunes from old computer to external hard drive to new computer.  Then I tried to sync iPod Classic 80 GB, but was told I couldn't synch it to new computer.  So I restored Ipod to factory settings and tried synching again.  It put on just a handful of songs I never heard of.  Meanwhile my 10,000 or so songs iin iTunes on my computer did not make it to my iPod.  How to get the itunes over to my now freshly restored iPod?

Please be patient, sync issues are time consuming, if you are lucky, just a Hard Rest and Restore will solved it.
    Ok Software Version 1.1.2.
So you can see all your 10,000 songs, in the new PC iTunes, and do you have any problem syncing the iPod using iTunes 10.5.3.3 on the old computer?
Can you do a Hard Reset  as below
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

On your iTunes please reset alert warnings, so that we can see the errors.

Then connect your iPod to the new PC and sync again.

  • My 160gb ipod classic won't sync to itunes on a mac (I've tried everything)

Just got a 160gb ipod classic off of craigslist. The slate grey one.
It says "connected eject before disconnecting" on the ipod when I plug it in and nothing shows up in itunes.  Every once in a while the "sync" circulating arrows start up, then stops and goes back to the plug symbol.
    It isn't available under "devices".
I updated itunes, I restarted my mac, I put the ipod into and out of recovery mode (while plugged into itunes and on it's own), and still nothing.
Everything on the ipod works perfectly fine.
One thing to note, is the ipod is completely full. It has like 3kb of free space. Could this be part of the problem? Is there any way to delete directly off the ipod not through itunes?
Is it possible that it's formatted for windows and needs to be reformatted for mac? If so, how do I do that?
    Please help!

You may refer to this tutorial, it's about how to fix iTunes sync problem with iPod. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • IPods can't be seen my iTunes on os x (but do show up in finder)

Hi all, wonder if someone can help me out.
I have two ipods an old classic and a new nano. When I plug them into my imac (os x 10.7.4) they will show up in finder but not in iTunes.
I also have an ipad and an iphone and those ones will show up just fine in itunes (both wired and wirelessly)
I know theres no problem with the cables and ports because they work with the other devices. I also know the ipods are fine because they will show up in itunes on my macbook air (also running os x 10.7.4.)
I have restarted the computer, the ipods and made sure to run software update to make sure everything is up to date.
Im out of ideas and right now I cant add music to my ipods which is really annoying.
    Anyone know of a solution?
    Thanks in advance...

    A tough one...
Next thing would be to repair permissions on your hard drive.
On the Finder menu bar, Click Go > Utilities
    Open Disk Utility.
On the left bar, click on your hard drive. There will be a drive aligned all the way left, and then your hard drive name indented slightly. Click on the indented drive.
On the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk Permissions.
This process could take a while depending on many different factors. Usually it takes no longer than 30 minutes but could take longer if there are a lot of permission errors.
Restart your Mac after this. Also uncheck the "restore windows from last session".
If this still doesn't work, go to any apple store with your sync cable and see if your iPod will mount on any of the Macs on display in iTunes. If an employee comes up to you, I always play stupid and say that you are trying to get the iPod to appear in iTunes because you can't at home. (Playing stupid is so much fun)
If your Nano is less than 90 days old, you should have free phone support too.
    One last thing:
    Download iRip from here: http://thelittleappfactory.com/irip/
iRip is a recovery tool that lets you copy content from an iPod to your computer without iTunes. (Saved me many times over)
You can download this application for free. Close and Quit iTunes and plug your iPod in. Open iRip. Click manual recovery. If iRip detects your iPod and you can see all your content, then something is really wrong here. If iRip can't detect your iPod then there is probably damage to the 30-pin connector and/or hard drive damage since iPod classic use a spinning hard drive.
Note: iRip will transfer 100 tracks for free from your iPod and can be used to save your music collection! Full version is like 20 bucks, totally worth it...
Our use here would be seeing if it mounts at all.

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Ipod Classic 160GB (2.0.4)
    Itunes (10.6)
    Mac OS Snow Leopard.
    Windows XP.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

  • When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. All my music appears to have been erased  iPod yet 41GB of data is on it. Help!

When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. If I do this I will lose the contents of the iPod. The iPod shows no music on it yet 41GB of data is on it under "About" on the iPOD itself. It would appear that the music files are still there. I don't want to reset the iPod as it will mean reloading a significant amount of music i.e. my entire CD collection. Any suggestions? Has my iPod died?

(I'll lose all my music right?)
That is correct. A restore wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.
See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • TS1410 By mistake I disconnected my iPod Classic when it said Do not disconnect. Now it doesn't appear in iTunes, but it does appear on my desktop. How can I get to reappear in iTunes (have tried resetting and rebooting).

By mistake I disconnected my iPod (5th generation) when it said Do not disconnect. Now it doesn't appear in iTunes, but it does appear on my desktop. How can I get to reappear in iTunes? I have tried resetting and rebooting. And my iTunes is up to date on my macbook pro, mountain lion, OS X 10.8.
    Thank you!

The iPod's filesystem may be corrupted.  This may seem like overkill, but it has been known to help many others in the same boat.  Try doing a low level reformat of the iPod's hard disk using the instructions in this article.

  • HT1923 Hi, my Ipod classic is not reflecting in Itunes (latest version) but I can see it in Computer as a hard disk. Kindly assist

    Hi,
My Ipod classic is not reflecting in Itunes which I have recently downloaded but it reflects in my computer as a hard disk.
    Please give me a solution.
    Thanks

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Also see these (if you haven't found them already):
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

  • IPod Classic won't sync with iTunes library on external drive

iPod Classic 160 is recognized by iTunes.   It knows the library is bigger than the iPod, and it allows me to select parts of the Music and Podcasts to install on said iPod.  It whirs for a long time, pretends it's writing to the iPod.  When I disconnect, there are no songs and no Podcasts on the iPod.
It did the same with a NEW iPod I bought yesterday.
How can I fix tbhis so I can write part of my library to at least one of my iPods?
    Thanks for any help.

After searching this issue out and trying a bazillion different things (with no luck), I deselected 'Enable Disk Use' then re-enabled, and everything is working now.

  • My 4th Generation click wheel 40 GB iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes.

    Hi There,
The title actually says it all..
(My 4th Generation click wheel 40 GB iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes 7.4.2, although the iPod works fine.. iTunes keeps saying to reset it, but I don't see why I should)
The iPod seems to work just fine, so I'm not in a big hurry to erase all my songs audio books etc..
I am thinking that this is a problem with Macintosh iTunes version 7.4.2, from what I'm seeing, but how should I proceed?
    Many thanks for any help.
    Eric

Sounds like a dead battery. Take it into your local Apple store/Genius bar and see if there is anything they can do for you.  Another option is to send it in to a third party repair company who can replace the battery at a pretty low cost.
