My Ipod crashed and I can't restore it.

When I try and restore it, it says I need to update my firmware but when I go to install the firmware it extracts but then I get an error message. It won't let me update to 5.0 or any earlier firmware. Help!!

I went and checked what version of iTunes I have and I have 10.5.1.42. Isn't this the latest version?

  • IPod crashed, and I can't use iPod Update!

I was recently given an iPod mini from a friend who no longer wanted it. I mainly use WinAmp as my music player, and therefore used it for moving songs from my PC to the iPod. After some time I discovered that a file I had tried to move to the iPod was an .ogg file, apparently not supported by the iPod. The file failed to be transferred, and the iPod froze. I undocked it and tried playing a song, but the iPod seemed empty, so I figured something had gone wrong, and that I needed an iPod update to reset the device completely. As I only had iTunes 6 or so, the iPod Update wasn't on my computer, so I installed iTunes 7.2, which seemed like the only way for me to get the iPod Update.
This I shouldn't have done. iTunes 7.2 uses about eight minutes to start up (my machine is fairly old), and when I connect the iPod it takes another two minutes for iTunes to discover it. Everything else in iTunes happens quickly. When I have connected the iPod, however, and it is shown with serial number and version and all that, iTunes freezes completely, making me want to kick it hard.
So, is there another way for me to update my iPod, resetting it completely? Can I download the iPod Updater without having to use iTunes? Please help!

  • I am locked out of my iPod touch and i can't restore it as it asks for my password which i don't know how do i unlock it?

I am locked out of my iPod and it says i cannot restore or back up due to me needing to unlock it and obviously i don't have my password. Please help, how do i unlock it?

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten password:
Restore (and reset password) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

My old computer crashed and I can't sync new songs from my new computer to my IPod without erasing all of the existing content on the IPod.  Can new songs be added without erasing?

    Yes by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
However, you can make this computer the syncing computer by:
    - Transering iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - For synced photos you need a program like TouchCopy or PhoneView. The do music too.
    - After everything is on the computer connect the iPod to the computer and make a backupo by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps, music, synced photos.

The only way to solve this error is to edit the host file in your system. All you need to do is to add the following line at the end of the host file:

  • IPods crash and can't back up library - HELP

I have had an iPod mini for 1.5 years. My spouse got an iPod (30GB video) recently. When we switch between them to update songs from one library, the iPods crash and have to be reset (even that takes a few tries following instructions on iPod help).
I tried circumventing the problem by copying the library on my laptop from our PC (to have one iPod with one computer, both have XP Pro) with the USB drive but the library won't copy from USB drive to the new iTunes. (it will play songs from USB but won't copy them).
    1. Can I backup the library on another computer?
    2. What is the safest way to create a backup library (CDs in my experience may not last long)?
    3. If we update the computer (hopefully soon) will that mean that we can't copy the library to a new commputer and will lose all the songs we bought?
    4. How can we prevent either iPod from blocking or crashing?
Thanks for any advice and help.

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

  • So randomly my ipod crashed and when i turned the ipod on again it was all white and blurred. Part of the screen is up to speed but the other half is slow. Already tried turning it completely off and restoring it on the computer

So randomly my ipod crashed and when i turned the ipod on again it was all white and blurred. Part of the screen is up to speed but the other half is slow. Already tried turning it completely off and restoring it on the computer

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • I recently bought a new laptop because my old one crashed.  The only backup I had for my music was on my ipod.  My new computer will not recognize the ipods music and I can't transfer anything.  What do I do???

I recently bought a new laptop because my old one crashed.  The only backup I had for my music was on my ipod.  My new computer will not recognize the ipods music and I can't transfer anything.  It keeps asking me to sync the ipod to this computer, but I'm scared to lose all my music.  I want to transfer some of the music onto my iphone but I can't.  I'm very frustrated and wish I knew more about computers at the moment!?!?  What do I do???

You will need the help of some sort of 3rd party software to help you copy the content from your Shuffle back to your PC.  Once you have done that, you can reimport this music into iTunes and configure it to sync to your new Shuffle.

i bought a second hand ipod 5 and the original owner forgot the email and password and i can't restore the ipod and it says i need the original apple ID but i dont know it could anyone help me??

If you can access the device: Tap Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings.
If you can't do that then you need to Restore it as New:
Locked Out, Forgot Lock or Restrictions Passcode, or Need to Restore Your Device: Several Alternative Solutions
    1. iOS- Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen

    Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
Also, see iTunes- Restoring iOS software.
You can also try using DFU mode:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • Hi have been using the classic for 4 years, of late whenever i load more than 4000 songs the ipod crashes and shuts down. till 3800 songs there seems to be no problem. do ipods have a finite life?

the classic ipod has crashed 4 times in the last 2 months. till i load 3800 to 3900 songs there seems to be no problem. but after that it just crashes and instructs me to restore to factory settings. just want to know if ipods have a finite life and need changing after this. i need urgent help at least if that is true i can save the trouble of loading songs every other week
    thanks and regards

Yep, iPod classic has life of about 2 years before the hardisk, starts to suffer from arthritis.
Here is a excellent post on iPod  diskdiagnostic by regular tt2.

You can also look into getting the iPod hardisk replaced by SSD/Compact Flash,  just google "iPod SSD replacement" or you can search in youtube, on how to do it yourself, if you got steady hands and hawkeye.
    SSD Capacity is expensive,

  • I have an Ipod 5 and you can not listen to music unless you have headphone plugged in

I have an Ipod 5 and you can not listen to music unless you have headphones plugged in

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • I-pod crashes and then can't access it for afew hours?

    Hi all,
Sometimes my ipod crashes and I cant get in2 it for afew hours sometimes. It just stays on the same screen and I cant go back a menu or play/stop/rew./f.forward. and if the light was on even that stays lit til' it sorts itself out. Often I have 2 wait til' the battery runs out til' I can use it again. It get proper frustrating sometimes, especially if I'm out all day and it happens in the morning!
    Has any1 else encountered this?
    Liam

Mine is doing the exact same thing at the moment. This is the first time it's happened and I'm not quite sure what to do either. It is frozen on a song. I cannot click on any of the buttons and the clock has stopped. Did the clock stop on yours as well? Tried to plug it in - but nothing happens. Is this similar to your problem? It has been frozen for about an hour now and I'm rather frustrated.
