My iPod freezes and skips entire tracks

My iPod photo 40gig has started freezing up in the middle of playing. It has also occasionally stopped loading tracks. It'll bring up the screen for the next track, sit there for a couple seconds with the track on 0:00 and then go on to the next track (without playing it either, on and on). I've been restarting it four or five times a day at work, mostly for the freezes. After a restart, it's good for an hour or two, then POW.
The skipping/freezing started about five days ago and there weren't any abnormal circumstances surrounding it (no fire, water, ten foot drops, or verbal abuse).
I've tried Apple's "Five R's" including the iPod Restore. I'm going to try a second restore tonight (just to make myself feel better, not because I think it'll have a different result than the first restore).
I've also tried replaying the same song it froze on to see if it's a bad spot on the disk, but the freezes seem random.
Any ideas? Or should I drop this thing off at the Apple Store and let them have a crack at it? It'd miss her if she were gone for long, we've become very close.
Thanks.

Yes, you can. It is a good idea to me too. You can check the HD of your iPod as follows
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

  • IPOD FREEZING AND SKIPPING SONGS

    hi,
i've had my ipod for about 6 years or so. just recently it's start to freeze and slow up on me. if i'm listening to songs and press the next song. it takes ages for the next song to come on or else it freezes. Also during some songs it skips on me as if part of the song is missing.
what to do? any help would be much appreciated

I had this problem with my old 20GB classic ipod, it all started when I began using my ipod for my running trainings, every day it used to get worse freezing every 10 minutos or so, then I got ****** and bought a new 80GB classic Ipod, I have it for about 3 weeks now and guess what? It started freezing or skiping songs also. I did a test where I synced the same library on my both ipod and the songs being skipped on my new one wasnt being skipped on the old one, so its a problem with the song, then I though it could be any damage in the ipod HD but my new ipod has no reason to be damaged, the only impact that it might have recived is from my running trainings, but the impacts are really weak. Other test I did was trying to remove the song being skiped from the ipod, everytime I did that my ipod couldnt be ejcted, it kept showing me the following message "The ipod canot be ejcted because it contains files that are used by another aplication." I had to unplug my ipod without ejecting it.

  • 60gb ipod photo keeps freezing and skipping through songs

I've had my 60gb ipod photo for almost a year and it keeps freezing and skipping through songs and sometimes it won't respond to a reset. I have to let the battery run down in order to use it again. I have restored it several times and it seems to keep happenning at least once a week.I have the latest software for it. Is there any thing else I can do?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync what you  want
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • 3rd Generation iPod - Connection and Skipping/Freezing Probs

Over the last few months I've been having more and more problems. The first was the battery life on the iPod seemed dramatically reduced, whereas a fully charged iPod used to be able to be left in standby over night and still have charge in the morning it now doesn't. The next was connecting my iPod to the PC to only have it give me a Blue Screen of Death, with errors such as pagefault_in_nonpagedarea and mmpoolcorrupteddriver. I went online and checked out many articles in the Apple Knowledge Base and on other Mac Sites. I tried resetting my iPod and putting into disk mode, neither of which work.I also tried reinstalling iTunes 4.9 and using 5.0. I've tried it on another computer which crashed it too. More recently I've also been experiencing my iPod freezing and continuing step the progress bar on screen but no sound is produced. I wasn't initially a fan of Apple however the iPod caused me to change my mind. I thought it would be simple enough to talk to a support center however it was going to cost me £35 to just talk to someone. Can anyone help me or is my iPod just broken? I love the design and I am probably going to buy another one if this is broken.
Note: The HDD also "clicks" and "whirrs" a lot more than usual when playing music
    Thanks in advance,
    Lewis

The first was the battery life on the iPod seemed dramatically reduced, whereas a fully charged iPod used to be able to be left in standby over night and still have charge in the morning it now doesn't.
This is reasonably normal. As iPod's get older, the battery life decreases.
The next was connecting my iPod to the PC to only have it give me a Blue Screen of Death, with errors such as pagefault_in_nonpagedarea and mmpoolcorrupteddriver.
This is a Windows issue only. The iPod is just a hard drive as far as the computer is concerned. It can't cause a blue screen without something being wrong with the computer itself. The "corrupted driver" is a bit of a giveaway too. Reinstalling Windows is probably the only option to fix this sort of thing.
More recently I've also been experiencing my iPod freezing and continuing step the progress bar on screen but no sound is produced.
Now this is more along the lines of a busted iPod. Might look into replacing it or getting it repaired by Apple.

I updated to IOS 7 on my Ipad 2 and now videos will not play, they freeze and skip and will not play.  Can anyone help?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

anybody know why Itunes / iP5 will no longer play all tracks, has worked for years, only stopped with the latest itunes update.

    Hey Kelsieee,
First, I would try to resolve the issue with the ! in a circle that you're seeing in iTunes. There's some steps in the following article that go over what that ! usually means and how to fix it:

  • Export QuickTimes freeze and skip while playing back

I’m new to Motion, and growing concerned. I’ve purchased and learned Motion for a specific job. I’ve built some very cool elements with many layers. I’ve grown accustom to the slow performance, skipping etc. while working on the project. That’s ok.
What concerns me is exporting. When exporting Draft or Best versions, most all the time the movies freeze or skip while playing back, either in QuickTime or Final Cut Pro
When exporting I select Export, as QuickTime Movie, using current project settings
    I’m using Motion 3.02-HDV 1080-60i project, 10 seconds long
    4x 2.5 Ghz G5
    5 GB Ram
I would appreciate and advice or tricks to be able to export a decent version of what I’ve built.
    Thanks!

    Andy, thanks for your help.
I have 30 gigs available on the hardrive. The file exports are usually less than a gig. I have a GeForce 6600 card.
When I select export setting from “current project settings” it uses the Animation codec and plays with freezes and skips. But with in that video that does play well, it plays very clean and clear.
When I change the export to 1080i60 at best quality, I’m guessing it uses the HDV codec? It does play back with out the skips and freezes. But it looks like **** with horizontal lines in titles stripes etc.
Is there a way to make the 1080i60 video playback clean?
    Thanks!

  • IPod freezing and not all songs play

My ipod freezes and cannot unfreeze until battery goes low. How do I get this problem fixed? Also, after I download a song and transfer it to my ipod, the ipod doesn't always play the song. It may play a few seconds, but that's it. I try to redownload the song and the ipod still won't play it. Need help with this thing!!

I would highly suggest "Restoring" your IPOD using the IPODs Updater software. Read here:

  • FREEZING AND SKIPPING ON IPOD

I received a message that my Ipod was corrupted and I had to reinstall to factory settings. I did that and since then my Ipod freezes when playing and skips songs. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thank you.
    Dell   Windows XP

] Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • Why does my ipod keep freezing and skipping songs?

I have the 80GB Ipod Classic, and for some reason it keeps skipping songs, for instance, whenever I go to look under a certain artist or a playlist of even just under "songs" I'll pick one and then it will skip one or two or ten, and there are some songs it just doesn't allow me to listen to anymore. Only on my ipod though, not on itunes. It also keeps freezing and will sometimes just stop in the middle of a song and skip to a new one. I've tried resetting it, and leaving it alone for a few days and letting it charge and leaving it off. Nothing seems to work.
    What can I do?

I had this problem with my old 20GB classic ipod, it all started when I began using my ipod for my running trainings, every day it used to get worse freezing every 10 minutos or so, then I got ****** and bought a new 80GB classic Ipod, I have it for about 3 weeks now and guess what? • 30GB Video freezing and skipping

When I am running on the treadmill with my black 30GB video attached to my shorts my iPod skips and freezes. I can start a song before I begin running, but after I start running if I try to change the song it will not play the next song until I hold the iPod still. Almost like a CD player without skip protection. I am guessing it has something to do with the HHD. I would like a confirmation on that though or any other thoughts.
    TIA

    Hi,
Thanks for replying to my thread. But I do not agree with you about the hard drive memory fact. I am well aware that these iPods contain moving part, and as I mentioned earlier, this is not my first iPod. I have a 20GB 3rd Gen. iPod also, and I took it to the Gym, trail/track running using the belt clip, and the run usually lasted for about 1.5 hour, and I never experience any skipping. But the 5th Gen iPod does. Therefore I do not think this is a common and acceptable fact for people using iPod with video for exercise/running purpose.

  • IPod freezes mid-way through tracks

starting this morning, my iPod started randomly freezing mid-way through tracks. the track will continue to play, but the bar tracking the duration stops advancing. when the track ends it stops. when i touch the buttons or wheel nothing happens. to play music again i have to reset the ipod. sometimes it repeats this problem in an hour, sometimes i get several hours of use before it freezes again.
this happened with my previous ipod, in early 2006, and after a month the internal disc stopped working and i had to trade it in and buy this one. can i fix it now, or am i doomed to lose an ipod a year, just after the warranty ends?

    Try disabling hard disk use.
    (Itunes -> Edit -> Preferences -> Ipod -> General)
I've tried most of the answers suggested on these discussion boards - I've restored to factory settings (several times), I've tried running chkdsk on the Ipod from Windows XP, I've rolled back to ITunes v4 (the one on the cd I got with the Ipod) and none of them worked.
Then I just unchecked the box to allow the Ipod to be used as a hard disk and (so far) that seems to have done the trick (I've played several albums without any skipping or freezing so far).
I'm still on Itunes v4. I'll try upgrading to v5 or v6 and see if it still works.
    Good luck.

  • Creative Zen Vision M:30Gb freeze problem skipping between tracks

    Hi guys,
I bought my Zen Vision M:30GB 2 years ago. It was a regenerated model by Creative.
I'm fully satisfied of this product, i think the best of his category, but It has this problem since two years...Sometimes when i skip between mp3s (especially in random mode) it freezes and remains on the screen of current mp3, blocked...even I try to touch all buttons it doesn't unblock and i have to reset with a clip in the reset hole.
I've noticed that this problem comes especially when i use random mode of entire library (about 4000 songs) or however with a long playlist...it doesn't happen when i listen a single album (about 20 mp3s in playlist)
    Sincerely i'm a little bored ...
I tried to do some clean and format up by the system menu, but the problem persists...
I've also thinked the problem could be because there are in library mp3 with variant bitrate...or a physical problem (I hope not)
    What do you think of?
    Thanks for help!

Hi, I stopped using this MP3 for about 2 or so years because I bought a new one. I decided to start using it again and downloaded all the required software but as soon as I unplugged the MP3 from the power outlet, the player died. I can't get it to start up without plugging it into a power outlet. I think it has rechargable battery? Why didn't it recharge itself?
My second enquiry is about the capacity of the player. When my player was empty, I went into "Information" and it said Total Space: 28GB and Free Space: 2GB. Why is free space only 2GB? Shouldn't it be 28 as well?
    Thanks in advance!
The battery will only last about 3yrs regardless of use.You will need to change it. Did you scroll down to see the album, picture, track counts? Did you partition part of the dri've for removable storage.
