My iPod freezes when I play certain songs

Hello,
I`ve had this problem for some time now. When I try to play certain songs on my (G1) iPod, it just freezes, and I have to reset it to make it work again. The strange thing is that this problem only occures with some of the songs, not all, and it´s the same songs every time that causes this problem.
I´ve tried full resets several times, updating the software on the iPod, and tried using both a PC and a Mac to transfer songs, with different iTunes versions, but the problem endures...
What´s even more "strange" is that even though I now use a Mac, and have imported all my songs all over again to this machine, almost the same songs that caused trouble before I changed computers are still causing trouble!
This tells me (even though I´m not a techie) that there is a HD problem on my iPod...
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

It's probally your hard drive it may be getting old and waring out.

  • ITunes 11.0.4.4 crashes when I play certain songs and the problem is spreading.

Ever since I downloaded iTunes 11.0.4.4 (for windows 7), the program has been crashing whenever I play certain songs and at this point the problem is spreading, more and more songs that weren't problems before. I have been through just about every troubleshooting step I could find more than once, reinstalling, safe mode, conflicting programs... if a solution out there was even vaguely related to my problem, I've probably tried it. The only modification that I've made to the program is enabling 1/2 star ratings, and I don't think that's the problem because the earlier versions of itunes worked fine with it, and I've tried temporarily moving the itunes preferences xml to make it generate a new one, and it didn't fix anything.
My library has over 14,200 tracks so I can't possibly delete and then re-add all the problem tracks to iTunes, and even if I could, I've tried doing that with a small number of specific songs already, and while it worked at first some of them have started making iTunes crash again at this point.
I understand that the problem is most likely that my library is corrupted, but I'm very wary of the solutions to that problem that I have seen because I have had to use them before more than once, and each of those times I've lost thousands of songs (last time it was 5,000 tracks) in the process and a shockingly large percentage of the tracks came back disorganized and improperly labeled (some of them as 4 letter strings of capital letters that I can't seem to identify without using shazam) and without ratings ( I have "keep iTunes files organized" and "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library" in preferences checked.)
It takes a huge amount of time to redo the information for the amount of tracks I have even if you buy software to help automate it, and it would take me 5.7 days to redo all of the ratings I've done, and ratings are important to me. I've added a lot of new tracks since then and my library is still 2,000 tracks smaller than it was before i had problems last time. The solution scares me enough that I've put it with the crashing for two months now, but it's getting unmanageable. If anyone can give me a way to fix this that would leave my library intact, or at least minimize the damage, I would be extremely grateful.
    Thanks.

I found this and it worked!!!

Re: iTunes keeps crashing when I select iTunes store (Win 8) iTunes 11
    Sep 26, 2013 5:43 AM (in response to Bristol1981a)
I had this exact same problem.  I found a fix on another support post that worked perfectly for me.  Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support and copy the filen named QTMovieWin.dll.  Then browse and past that file into C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Hope this helps you.  My iTunes store is working fine now.
    God bless!!

  • Ipod Classic no longer plays certain songs.

My Ipod 160gb Classic has been working correctly as of lately (or rather, how it usually acts instead of correctly); however, yesterday I plugged my Ipod into my Windows XP computer, Itunes Version 10.1.1.4. After resyncing/connecting/etc. that the Ipod always does when it is plugged in and letting it charge, I eject my Ipod through Itunes.
Then, much to my delight, my Ipod was somehow managed to be wiped. No music, no videos, photos, podcasts, etc. However, I did find it interesting my game stats were still there, so I assume the Ipod just didn't decide to do a whole harddrive delete (I may be wrong). I tried the Center Button + Menu combination for the X amount of seconds, for the Apple Logo to appear. No dice, still nothing.
    But anyway.
I now tried to plug my Ipod into my computer again, and kept receiving errors saying it could not be read due to an Input/Output issue in reading my Ipod. This could have been the USB port, but that doesn't change the problem I have currently having.
So once the Ipod was read (took forever and Itunes kept freezing), I restored it because Itunes told me there was an issue with it. And you know, I had nothing on there, so why not. After restoring, and resyncing all 750 of my songs from Itunes (took forever. All of these songs either bought through the Itunes store, or through a CD I own (I can supply photo proof of these to show the issue isn't from pirating)). But anyway, after resyncing all these songs, a huge issue occurs that I am unable to fix. Certain songs will only play for around 5 seconds, then not play the rest of the song, and continue to the next. Or won't even play the song at all.
Ex: Song 1 on an album will play, then the next song to play is Song 5, skipping 2,3,4 in between.
Sometimes certain songs will play, other times they will not for no reason whatsoever. It's frustrating when I try to play a song and it'll work, then I'll try listening to it a few hours, or even minutes without turning off my Ipod, and it won't play now. When I try to manually select a certain song that isn't playing, the Ipod will freeze for probably around 10 seconds, until it ends up skipping every song in between until the next 'playable' one comes up.
All of these songs work on Itunes currently, and worked before the issue I had with all my media being wiped from the Ipod.
I checked the file format of some of these songs, comparing not working to working, and they are the exact same. The issue is occuring with both songs from CD's as well as purchased from Itunes. Again, all of these songs were bought legally.
I searched through other people having these similar issues, however much of the way those were fixed aren't working here. I tried several of those solutions: restoring, converting files formats, making sure Itunes Store purchases, etc, and I'm pretty tech-savvy  But the thing is, all of my songs worked before, now they don't, and I just can not figure out why.
I hope I supplied enough information on the issue and how it happened. Sorry for the huge message. Help is appreciated

Did a restore without any media being put on, here are the stats, and the increase from the original posted:
    Retracts: 1                         (+0)
    Reallocs: 280                     (+64)
    Pending Sectors: 480         (+48)
    PowerOn Hours: 198          (+1)
    Start/Stops: 24856             (+50)
    Temp: Current 33c             (+6)
    Temp: Min 14c                   (+0)
    Temp: Max 54c                  (+0)
Although the hours, and temps don't matter much I included them anyway. Here are the stats after another restore, and all the media being added (increase from original, not last restore):
    Retracts: 1                         (+0)
    Reallocs: 400                     (+184)
    Pending Sectors: 48           (-384)
    PowerOn Hours: 198          (+0)
    Start/Stops: 24861             (+55)
    Temp: Current 36c             (+9)
    Temp: Min 14c                   (+0)
    Temp: Max 54c                   (+0)
The pending sectors went drastically down, which is awesome, lot less songs are skipping.. Except the reallocs went significantly up as well, I assume that would be due to the remaps of the pending sectors? And should I try more restores to see if that would help try to fix the problem, assuming it would be fixing desk/memory errors?

  • IPod Freezes/Locks up on certain songs/albums --Hard Drive scratched?????

I have a 30 gb ipod video. The problemS are that it will not finish what it starts. If I play a movie it will work fine for a bit and all of a sudden it will freeze. The video will lock and it will make a screeching noise similar to old dial up internet. Some videos that have played before, when selected now will not play at all. I'll either get a black screen or black screen and then it switches back to the menu. As for music (which is what I would like to use it for) it will also randomly freeze. Certain songs/albums won't play at all. Others will play and then randomly lock up. Some will play and lock up at the same point every time. Some play the entire album without skipping a beat. I'm wondering whats wrong. It's very frustrating listen to this at work and starting to get into an album or song and the NOTHING. It freezez. I can feel little clicks in the hard drive like it's searching or trying to catch up but it never does. I can have a fully charged battery and once this happens it drops to halfway. Sorry about the rammbling-I didn't want to leave anything out. Thanks

I've tried resetting and restarting (whichever one holding menu and the center is) a lot because of the locking up. It will play a song and completely stop-the hard drive will be spinning like it's trying to read and will significantly drain the battery. I can sometimes get it to pause so I can get back to the menu, but there is some serious lag when trying to do anything in this state. Usually the only way to solve this is to "Menu/Center" it. When the movies screech like I mentioned above, I can pause and get timebar to show up and if I fast forward a bit it usually will work again. The songs are a lot less predictable and cooperative. How would I reformat in Disk Utility like you mentioned?

  • Help!!!!! ipod rests when i play certain mp3 tracks

    Hi All,
Hope someone can help me. i just bought the 80g ipod Video yesterday. Everything is great except for one thing. I have some comedy shows (They are not video. It's mp3) that i downloaded onto my ipod which I also had on my 30gig. They worked perfectly on my 30 gig but on my 80 gig, it seems when i try to play them it resets the IPod automatically. It just won't play. Now, mind you.. most mp3's are either 192 bit rate or 128 but theses ones are lower. Some are 56 quality and some are just a tad higher but none the less, everytime i try and listen it just resets. But all my music seems to work just great except for these comedy mp3's. I don't understand why?? It works great with the 30 gig. Anyone have any answers to this or should I just bring it back and exchange it for another one? Thanks for your help....

is she resetting on mono mp3s, zeppelin? if so, perhaps check to see if the workaround from the following document is of any help with that:

  • My itunes keeps freezing when I play one song;

I recently bought the album "Madvillainy" on the itunes store and whenever I play the song "Great Day" it freezes my entire computer at the 1:25 mark. If I'm quick I can shut down itunes fast enough to keep the whole computer from freezing up, but otherwise I can't even open the task manager to shut itunes down.
I am also now getting a message that reads "The itunes library folder cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50). This is irritating to me.
Also why isn't there an e-mail address for support?

It's probably a corrupt file. Delete it and contact the iTunes Music Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of this web page and explain the problem to them. Or log into the iTunes Music Store, go to your Purchase History, find the problem track, click the arrow to the left of the track listing, and use the reporting link there.

  • My iPod resests when I play a song

Everytime I play a song of Interpol, my iPod resets. I dont know why, and I havent seen if Interpol is the only artist which resets my iPod.
It happened since I downloaded iTunes 7.0 and iPod 1.2.
    What can I do?
    Please help.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • ITunes crashes when I play certain songs

After having upgraded to the latest firmware (OS 4.3.1) iTunes crashes when I try to play and sync some of my songs in my album that previously played and synced fine. The songs are encoded as .m4a at 256kbit, 44.1 kHz and are playing fine in for example Windows Media Player...
So why suddenly not in iTunes? And what can I do about this?

  • IPod restarts when I play certain podcasts, help...

Ok so this doesn't happen with all podcasts, just my favorite one. And only then the ones that I haven't heard yet, the ones I have open up fine. The second I try to listen to a new one, it flips over to the screen like it's about to start playing, and then the screen goes dark and it restarts. I don't want to restore my iPod because I have stuff on there that's difficult for me to get again and I have restarted it, taken the new stuff off and then put them back in. Anyone know whats wrong or what I can do? Thanks.

    Hi
Sorry to hear about your problems. I have a similar one. I subscribe to a series of podcasts and sometimes, for some episodes, the iPod will not play it: it will start to play it and may last up to a few minutes and then it just returns to the main screen like it has finished. This has happened with both "amateur" podcasts and very professional series as well.
Did you manage to find out what was causing your problem?

  • My ipod crashed or skips when playing certain songs

Whenever I use itunes I can play all of my songs, however when I use my ipod nano 5th generation I am unable to play certain songs. When I try to play these songs my ipod either skips over the song or crashes. Both my ipod and itunes are up to date. I have tried doing a restore. I have tried taking off all the songs and reloading them (this just causes a different set of songs to become unplayable). I have also checked all my music files for corruption with software from CNET(they are all fine).
The most common response I've seen to problems similar to mine is this...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26488
    Nothing on that page works.
    Please help, Thanks.

It's hard to say what cause of error is in particular, without a bit of troubleshooting.  Where were these problem tracks downloaded from?
Have you tried all of the troubleshooting here?
Troubleshooting songs that skip on iP
Again, I"m not really all of this troubleshooting is worth it since as you stated the problem is only apparent on the older iPod Video, which would point to an issue with that device.  You could try and do a disk diagnostic on it to see if there is anything in particular that stands out there.  See this post from another forum member turingtest2 describing how to perform this test and what the numbers mean.

Apple doesn't have a trade in policy, but they do have a recyling program where you can bring your old iPod into be recycled for a 10% discoun towards the purchase of a new one.

  • Why does screen freezes when I attempt to play certain songs in my library

Why does my screen Freeze when I attempt to play certain songs I have downloaded from CDs into my library?
I have just received my Nano and I'm unsure if I want this to keep happening

Apple removed my previous post because I referenced jailbreaking which is a violation of the TOS.  Sorry about that!
That said, I can't think of any way to get around the file size limitation.  I suppose itunes match isn't really meant to give you access to play all your songs anywhere.  It instead gives you the opportunity to download your songs via wifi when you aren't at home.  I can't see that it makes any difference one way or the other to Apple but it obvioiusly would make a difference to the wireless provider.
So now, my question is whether this happens on with all carriers.  I have experienced this on AT&T.  Does anyone here have Verizon or Sprint?
