My Ipod has no volume

The unit appears to be functioning properly, but there is no sound coming out of the ear pieces. I have tried other headphones. I can also hear light fuzz that changes when I adjust the volume. Is it on mute somehow?

Make sure the headphones plug is completely inserted into the headphones jack. You will feel a definite "click" when fully seated. You may need to press harder than expected.

Is there no sound period? I mean nothing through the headphones or the speaker? If the sound works only through the speaker or just through the headphones the switch inside the headphone port maybe stuck open. Try plugging and unplugging 10 to 12 times to unstick it. If no sound at all, go into Settings>Music>Volume Limit. See if it is turned on, if so check that the limit is not turned down to zero. If still not the problem try a soft reset, press and hold the power and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears, about 15 seconds, then release. if still no joy go into Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. If still no joy, connect to iTunes via the cable and Restore to backup. If that doesn't work Restore to new. Just remember to save all your stuff that can be wiped before you restore, pictures, music, contacts etc. If none of this works, then maybe a hardware issue contact Apple Genius Bar or store and have your iPod evaluated. Yu can try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. nothing is lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try:

...when i go to turn it on now, it either shows the sad face or the exclamation mark. It has done this before and was fixed by restoring the ipod. However, now, when i plug it into the computer (i have tried two different USB cables) it will not start up, and shows the battery symbol frozen for a while before returning to the sad face and then back to the battry.
Any ideas what to do apart from throw it in the bin and buy a different mp3 player?

I believe my Ipod has died

I have a Ipod mini and I bought it in july of 2005. I have been told that the battery dies after two years.

It wont charge when I plug it into a wall unit or into my computer. When I try to turn it on the apple sign pops up then the sad ipod icon comes on. I tried to restart and restore it but both dont work.

First, I also agree that it is probably the right time to have a battery replacement, but you have to deal with the sad iPod icon, which caused by the sudden cut off of the battery power - the HD stuck at a certain point .. but have a read of the following

Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. The earphones must be pushed very hard into the iPod. So hard, that the white part of the plug must touch the iPod in order for the external speakers to turn off. You will hear a click.
If you do a forum search, you will find this same solution. If it does not work, you will need to take your iPod to an apple store or call the Apple iPod tech support if still under warranty or you have Apple Care.

Ipod has stopped being recognised by windows or itunes. tried everything

My ipod 30gb video is no longer being recognised.
symptoms:
I plug ipod into the usb cradle
drive appears in 'my computer'
itunes 7.2 loads automatically
ipod has usual 'do not..' message
ipod screen then brightens with same 'do not..' message then goes back to menu on ipod
drive dissapears from 'my computer'
nothing updates and itunes diagnostics say connection has failed. all usb hubs reported in diagnostics are ok.
I have tried:
1. resetting ipod
2. windows /manage/settings/ipod checks
3. system restore
4. driver removal of ipod
5. firmware update removal in itunes directory
6. ipod lead instead of cradle and other USB ports
6. everything else suggested on the help and support centre
the ipod works fine and I can see/hear all music and video on it and the itunes library matches the ipod
device manager sees the USB device as (0)ipod and says it is working fine
but the ipod is not being recognised??????

Thanks! But I actually figured it out! Right after I said something about the driver, I went into device mangager. Sure enough even though it did not show up as a drive letter the device manager said is was installed and working.
So I deleted the device out of device manager. Restarted and plugged it in. Although I go some weird error. It found the IPOD and now Itunes sees it.
I believe that killing the process would have done the same thing as you stated.
Thanks to all for taking the time to answer these issues. It beats the apple store or tech support.

- How did you dlete stuff from the iPod? If you have a 1G or 2G iPod and deleted the stuff by going to Settings>Genera.>Reset>Erase aall contents and settings without being connected to a power source, the battery dies before he erase was comleted since it can take hour.
- In any event try the following:
- Connect to a chaging sour for three hours.
- Reset the iPod and then connect to the computer and try to restore va iTunes.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Next try placing the iPod in recovery moe and then try to restore. For recovery mode:

My new iPod has now crashed and is unusable after updating it. Don't update. I just lost the only good thing I have because of them pushing me into it.

My new iPod has been updated. I was pushed into it. So then I thought "it could use one it could improve it". I read as much as the terms and conditions as I could read that was understandable. And now it's been less then two days and my iPod is now practically useless. Don't update your iPod. It was the only good thing I had. I pleded and pleded to my parents for weeks and save up for weeks to get one. And now it's not even a year old and I've lost it. I can't afford to get a new one. And I can't afford to loose this one. i worked hard every day all day For months to be able to even get a quarter of what i needed. And my parents agreed to pay for the rest and it was my Christmas present. i was extremely happy. It's the best thing that I have and I've lost it because of an update Apple pushed me into. Now they won't help me.
my iPod is freezing every 5-10 minutes for long periods of time. It is:

the keyboard board is lacking severely
lags through out ipod
i cannot play games as it lags then freezes.
my screen is pressing where I don't press it.
