Since Nov update about a third of my songs have a circle with an exclamation mark inside the circle. These songs will not play on my computer. Message says  "The song .... could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  I have reloaded these back onto itunes with my own CD collection. They work for a short while, then the same thing happens. I don't  know what is causing this or how to fix it.

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

Try resetting the iPod whilst connected to the charger. Hold down the menu/select buttons until you see the logo. Also have a look here.

  • Ipod and the file with the exclamation

My ipod keeps coming up with that icon with the file and exclamation and it doesn't seem to want to let me do anything other than reset.. which just sends it back to the file icon again.
    any ideas?

Will you people ever look at previous posts on this subject??!!
The problem has come up in case after case, and I can give you the solution someone gave me--on this site!
    1. Get a putty knife or paint scraper, with a thin strong blade.
    2. Carefully slip the blade between the back and front of the case. It fits tightly, the metal back over the plastic front. Wiggle and pry carefully until the two parts of the case separate. Be ready to keep the guts from falling out.
    3. You will see two large flat pieces inside, the drive and the battery. One will have a black flat ribbon cable plugged into a gold socket. Unplug the cable and plug it in again.
    4. Put everything back together.
This has made mine operational for a good month with no incidents. But you have to take care to not drop or damage anything.

  • Have a file with a ? mark after trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard.

I am running Leopard on my MacBook Pro and wanted to upgrade to Lion. Wouldn't work so friend suggested I try to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Followed the Snow Leopard Installation instructions which said it would take 45 minutes and it would automatically reboot when it was done.
After hearing the familiar boot up chime, I check to find a black screen. Managed to eject the Snow Leopard installation disk by shutting down and starting up with the EJECT button pressed.
Tried to boot up and I get a file with a flashing question mark in it.
Tried to boot with the Snow Leopard disk holding down the OPTION key and I get a very dark screen with the first screen of the installation instructions that can only be seen with a flash light. Can't find the curser so tried the ENTER key which takes me to the next page which is very dark too. Can't find the curser so tried the ENTER keY to no avail. Tried the Leopard Disk with the same results.
Tried to boot with Leopard disk holding down the X key and I get a very dark screen with the first screen of the installation instructions that can only be seen with a flash light. Can't see or find the curser so tried the ENTER key which takes me to the next page which is very dark too. Can't find the curser or Disk Utility but with the aid of the flashlight I can read the screen which says:
    "Welcome to Installer
To install OSX click CONTINUE and follow instructions.
To quit choose Quit Installer from the installer menu and click the start up disk."
Can't find the curse so tried the ENTER key to no avail.
Tried command+S with the installation disk in and fsck -fy yields "installation DVD appears OK".
Tried command+S WITHOUT the installation disk in and I get a file with a flashing question mark in it.
Tried OPTION key WITHOUT the installation disk in and I get a blank screen with a moveable curser but nothing else.
I have tried all the above with both the Leopard and Snow Leopard Disk with the same results.
I do run Time Machine so I have the ability to restore what I had this am but I can't seem to get to that option.
How do I get to my latest Back Up on Time Machine or boot from TM?

Unless he controls your machine (same household), you can't. At $30 USD, pop for your own copy.

  • I have just subscibed to itunes match, but seems to have only moved songs that I have purchased from itunes. Those songs have a cloud next to them and some have a cloud with an exclamation mark inserted, when u click on it to play it it now says can't fin

I have just subscribed to icoud match but am having difficulties. It says it has moved all my songs to the cloud but the cloud symbol has seemed to only appear by the songs purchased from the itunes store only, (this is on the desktop where I originally setup my itunes account) and some of the cloud symbols have an exclamation mark in them, so if I attempt to play them now, it says it can't find it!!!. Also, the main purpose of this exercise was to create space on my iphone and ipad............so once I have succesfully uploaded all my songs to the cloud, do I then delete all my songs off my devices to ceate that space or does that happen automatically?

Once you successfully add you iTunes library to iTunes Match, you go to Settings>iTunes & App Store on your iOS device and turn on iTunes Match.  Your iTunes Match library will then appear on your iOS device.

  • I have hundreds of photos on my computer but when I try to click on them it shows a grey box with an exclamation mark.  How do I get the program to let me edit and use the photos?

I have hundreds of photos on my computer but when I click on the photo all that comes up is a gray screen with with an exclamation mark.
These are the last photos ever taken of my husband and I need to know how to recover them properly.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Iphoto thumbnails ok but have triangle with an exclamation mark when I click on the thumbnail so can't view it as a bigger picture.

In my iPhoto the thumbnails are all present but when I click on them the bigger picture is not visible and I can see a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Has anyone got any suggestions?

That means iPhoto has lost the link to the original file.
    What version of iPhoto?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
(A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.)
Have you used any apps to "clean" or "tune up" your Mac recently?
Have you deleted any images from 'All My Files' or 'All My Photos'?

  • I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files)

I can't get my music to play in my itunes. It comes with a exclamation mark next to the song numbers and says that the original songs can't be played cause cant find the file. How do I get the songs back? (I found the files

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed.
If you use an external drive, a change in drive letter is a common cause and you need to change it back.
AS a way of working out what has happened, right click on a track and select the summary tab (you will have to go past an error message). The summary tab will tell you where iTunes thinks the track is located. How does that compare with where the track actually is?
The xml library file is not used by iTunes, it is created to allow other programs to access the library. You can recreate the iTl file from the xml file, but there is no point if the location of the files is wrong.
There is a simple way of getting you music back in iTunes, but it loses all playlists counts and rating. To do this drag iTunes library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to your desktop. Then open iTunes and an empty library is created. Add you iTunes Media folder to it.
If you can't work out what went wrong and how to fix it, you may have to do this.

  • HT4718 I have nothing on my Mcintosh HD after trying to install Mavericks. I did save a recovery copy of files however this was also lost. All I now have is a file with a question mark with nothing else happening. What should I do?

Apple recently sent a message asking me if I would like to upgrade to Mavericks which was free. I considered installing after saving a copy of my HD to a WD external drive. I proceeded with the instalation however when it was time to reboot the programme the computer displayed a message that it could not process the request due to errors with the hard drive. The computer then requested that i save a copy and the verify disk and repair disk which i followed and the computer would not repair due to an error. At which pioint I did some research and was told by the IMac to push shift when it starts to enter disk utility and repair the Mcintosh HD. I did as asked however the computer would still not install with Mavericks.
So after many attempts of trying to start over, I was prompted to erase the Mcintosh HD and reboot using the saved copy. At this point all data was lost and all that is left on my computer is a file with a question mark with no way of restoring the HD drive. Could anyone help please?

It sounds like your HD may have died.
If you could answer a few questions it may help figure out what you should do next:
What OS did you have on your computer before you tried to upgrade to mavericks?
Did your computer originally come with installer disks?

If you're using Fluid Grid Layouts, none of these methods will work.  I think the very best you can do is determine the min-height required for desktops & tablets.  Mobile devices don't need min-height because those divisions will stack on top of each other.
To illustrate with a working example,
    http://alt-web.com/FluidGrid/Fluid2.html
    The relevant CSS code:
/* Special Rules for Tablets */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 481px) {
    .gridContainer >div {min-height: 255px;}
/* Special Rules for Desktops */
    @media only screen and (min-width: 1025px) {
    .gridContainer >div {min-height: 325px;}

  • I have a file with the (.rar) extn. How do I unzip this file,

I have a file with the (.rar) extn.  how do I unzip this file.

Rar is not zip so you need a unrar utility to expand it.  The one above is one example of many.  If you follow that link you will see a "Related Software" section on that page that lists a bunch more.
FWIW, my current favorite is UnRarX.
There's also the unrar cammand if you need to do it from the terminal (or script).

  • My ipod displays a folder with an exclamation point

well my ipod displays a folder with an exclamation point and it says "go to apple.com/support/ipod" and i went there and nothing it said helped me out....and to top all that off my ipod is making a wierd noise....does anyone know anyhting i can do?
      Windows XP

Try the troubleshooting steps set out on this page: "iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point when you turn it on" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61003
If they don't work and it continues to make strange noises then return it as it is probably a more serious fault than you can fix youirself
