My iPod is charging but it is not recognized by my computer.

I am a new iPod user and I am trying to put music on my iPod. When I connect it to to my computer the charging icon appears but neither my computer or iTunes recognizes it. When I go to Edit and Preferences in iTunes it says no iPod connected but I know it is because it is charging. Can anybody tell me what the problem is and how I can fix it?
  Windows XP Pro

I also have this problem, although I don't seem to get the charging icon either. I recieved my IPOD at xmas, connected it to my machine and now I can no longer see any USB storage devices. Connected my IPOD to my laptop and everything is ok. So it is not the cable or the IPOD. Previous to connecting the IPOD to my machine ALL usb storage devices worked perfectly. Somehow my USB has been corrupted. (See my previous post "USB no longer recognised for IPOD or ext drive")

  • My iPod Shuffle 4th generation 2GB is not recognized by My Computer in Windows or under Devices in iTunes.

Everyone has the same problems. My iPod has been plugged in properly, I have followed all the support suggestions but nothing works. HELP PLEASE!

I have downloaded that utility but can not use it, as
when I plug the shuffle into the USB port, it is not
recognized by either computer I am using. I can not
reset or restore, because in order to do that the
computer would have to know the shuffle is plugged in
and it doesnt. I have tried this on two different
computers and get the same result, so I dont think
its a computer issue, its an ipod issue. I also used
to be albe to play the shuffle on the Xbox 360 and
    now can not.
Just as a check, did you actually follow the THESE directions...EXACTLY?
    Using iPod shuffle Reset Utility
    1. Quit all running applications on your computer.
    2. Open the iPod shuffle Reset Utility.
    3. Connect iPod shuffle to a USB port on your computer. Do not connect iPod shuffle to a USB port on your keyboard or other non-powered USB hub.
    4. Click the Restore button. If prompted, enter an Admin user name and password.
    5. The restore process will start.
    6. When it is complete, quit iPod shuffle Reset Utility and open iTunes to sync music to your iPod shuffle.

  • USB charges devices but they are not recognized in 'my computer'

    I have a A135-S2356.
It has 4 USB ports, only 3 are visible in device manager.
Only 1 charges/sees my device....iphone charges, laptop external fans runs, external hard drive lights up, but nothing is recognized in 'my computer'
I get an error message when i plug anything in to the other 2.
I have tried uninstalling them in device manager and rebooting but they still don't work.
I am not very technical so i am completely stumped at this point!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • Ipod touch charges but Macbook does not recognize

I have had my Ipod touch for about one year but have not hooked it up to the computer for awhile now. I went to sync it to itunes today and it would not do anything. I am using the latest version of Itunes, my firewire cable and port is working fine as the Ipod charges when it is hooked up. I really don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Yeah I was using the old firewire cable that came with my old 2nd generation Ipod. Unfortunately I lost the USB cable it came with, guess I'll have to buy a new one. Thanks for the help though.

  • Battery charges but ac power not recognized Presario CQ61

Hi everyone.  I have a Compaq Presario CQ61.  A couple days ago after doing the windows 7 system update (don't know if this is really related or not) my computer stopped recognizing the AC adapter.  What I mean is the battery still charges all the way to 100%, but the OS never recognizes the computer as being on AC power, only battery.  This is annoying and makes things like updates, installs, and gaming extremely difficult and/or impossible.  I tried unistalling the Device in device manager and re-installing it.  I can't reflash BIOS because the software requires I be on AC Power.  I've even down a sytem restore and got nothing.  Please help if you can...I really don't want to factory reset.  My computer is not under warranty by the way.
    Thanks in advance

My question regarding the icon was actually related to how it appeared in normal mode rather than safe mode.  I apologize for not making that clearer.  Safe mode was just a straight verification of the presence of the issue without doing anything else.
According to this document, which may not necessarily be updated, there are seven adapters that should work with this notebook.
HP 90W Smart Pin Dongle AC Adapter
    HP 90W Smart AC Adapter
HP 90W Universal Power Adapter with USB
    HP 90W Slim Adapter -
HP 90W Notebook PC Auto/Truck Adapter
HP 90W Smart Combo AC Adapter
    HP Slim Travel AC Adapter
Most of these are 90W adapters.  The only one that is supposedly rated at 65W is the last one and it's a special use adapter.  I'm not certain why the replacements for this unit are marked as 90W and the one it originally came with is a 65W, but most HP notebooks do use 90W adapters and the symptoms do align with an adapter that is rated to too low for this system.
However, you could perform a system restore followed by  a full system recovery (if the restore didn't work) to rule out any software (e.g. drivers) issues.  By chance, do you happen to have access to a 90W adapter to test with?

  • IPod is not recognized by my computer, but it will charge

I looked through the forums but everyone seems to have trouble connecting their iPod AND charging it. I can plug mine into my iMac and it starts charging, but it does not show up as a disk or in iTunes. This is a brand new iPod (my last one iPod's HD died). The only thing I can think is that maybe it is the firewire cord, because someone said different pins are used for charging and transferring data. I've tried all the steps that Apple says, but I can't restore obviously.
    Any help out there?

General troubleshooting for unrecognized ipods in Windows is mentioned here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495
Start by checking Apple Mobile Device Service: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Removing and reinstalling iTunes is covered here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
As mentioned in this article, reinstalling iTunes will not delete your music and apps, but backing up is always a good idea.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. See how to back up the contents of your iTunes library in How to back up your media in iTunes.

  • Ipod will charge, but is not found

Hello, I have had my Ipod Mini since march of this year(2005) and it has been working great up until about a few months ago. My Ipod will charge but is not recognized on the computer, and I have tried it in every one of my USB 2.0 slots(10 of them).
When it is recognized sometimes it will update the songs onto my Ipod and then it will just disappear from my computer, like its not connected, but it will still charge. What I want is for when I open "My Computer" it will show that a Ipod is connected and I can open if from there. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be welcomed. And yes, I have tried every one of the support things on the site and in my Ipod booklet.

Ive restarted my computer many times and its still the same, it only works about 15% fo the time, and when it does rihgt when it finishes updating it will act like its not there anymore.

  • TS1538 My Ipod wont charge, but it says it's connected to my computer

My Ipod says it won't charge, but when it's connected to my computer it says the device is not recognized, but it connects to my computer. I've tried plugging it into a outlet and it still didn't charge.

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
