Which model Nano? Have you checked the headphone jack for debris and cleaned it if necessary?

I have an old iPod (3d generation I think) which worked ok up to the point when I got a new Macbook with a new iPod (60G, black). Since then the old iPod doesn't want to be recognized anywhere, on Windows or Mac. When I switch it on, all I see is the apple on the screen, nothing else works. Okay, so I bought a refurbished 40gb iPod on ebay about 3 weeks ago. When I got it, I plugged it in, it came on, iTunes opened up and asked me what I wanted to name the iPod. I name it, then it starts to sync. It brings over my folders from iTunes, then says "copying song 1 of 143..." Then it just stops and says "you may disconnect your iPod", but none of the songs have been copied.
I tried unplugging it and then plugging it back in, and now it gives an error message saying "the iPod may be corrupted, you should restore..." I try to restore it and the restoration fails because of an "unknown error". I've tried using different USB ports, tried resetting the iPod, gone through the 5Rs, even updated the digital signatures in XP. NO DICE.
Now when I plug the iPod in, windows says it's an unrecognized device. I reset it which fixed that problem, but iTunes still can't deal with it. It keeps saying it's corrupted and to restore it but restoration fails.
I tried it on my other comp (also an XP box), and iTunes said it was synced to another computer, do you want to erase it and sync it to this computer, etc. etc. I did so, and once again, it brings over the folders but no songs will copy. Then the nonsense with the errors starts all over again and it refuses to let me restore it.
I returned the first iPod to the guy and he sent me another one and it's doing the EXACT same thing as the first. iPod seems fine otherwise, wheel works fine, it charges normally, shows 37.1 GB free space on the iPod screen. But refuses to work. "the ipod could not be restored" error 1418, and all that. I can't even format it under windows.
Any suggestions? I've tried everything I know of except for uninstalling iTunes 7 and going back to 6.You haven't mentioned re-registering the DLL's in windows xp which is the suggested fix on Windows XP for ipod's doing this.
Disconnect the iPod from the computer and close iTunes.
Copy the 10 lines below (highlight and ctrl+c or right-click and copy)

Open notepad:
1. Start>Run
2. Type 'notepad'
3. Hit return
Paste the text into notepad (ctrl+v or right-click and paste)
Save the file as registerdll.bat on your desktop
Close notepad
Doubleclick the registerdll.bat file on the desktop
A command prompt will appear and these items will be processed. When it is finished you can delete the batch file.
See if it then syncs okay. -

I need help with my iPod Touch 4th Generation! It was in the morning and I was getting ready for school, and I saw my iPod needed the iOS 6 update. So I updated it, and when it was installing (showing that bar) I accidently was late, and took my iPod with me. I left the Wifi Area and now when it turns on the apple logo darkens and then it goes to a greyish blueish screen. Sometimes when it turns on the apple logo darkens and then goes to the same screen with a bunch of lines across it. What happened, and how do I fix it? If I turn it off it turns on by itself and then does the same as above. Please help me!

thanks for your help.Try resetting the device. The hard drive may not be full, but the device RAM might be. If resetting doesn't work then perhaps you have many large playlists and these are reducing the amount of free RAM for games.

Please help, I cannot get any apps free or bought, I am able to update just fine and, I can use the apps I already have with no problem. But to be able to install an app. ie, new game recommended by app I already own, is impossible. A few weeks now I have been unable to get any new apps. Why is this occuring and can there be something I can do to fox this without upgrading to 4.0.
Try resetting the device.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. -

That is precisely what my mid-2010 MacBoook Pro 13 was doing before the drive finally died after an Apple Genius rebooted it a dozen or so times. I have since read about the exact same thing happening to others, including a writer for The Atlantic magazine who had never had an issue with a Mac before. Do a back-up ASAP to make sure you don't lose anything and see about replacing the HDD. It is only about $140 for a new drive. The real issue is if you lose your data, too. So, make sure you do that back-up!

What happens if you reset the Nano? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear. Start playing another track, and then pull the headphones out? Any change?
I am going to try this out with my 6G Nano later on to see if this functionality does indeed exist on this model. Or perhaps somebody who comes along to this thread can offer an answer.

Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
If this doesn't resolve your problem, then let me know.

Hello. I've had a 30gb Ipod Video for a few months and have taken great care of it. All of a sudden, however I tried connecting it to my sisters laptop for some of her songs last night and it did not connect, However the "do not disconnect" was on the screen...well since it was doing nothing I disconnected it and it still said "do not disconnect after a long time. then I pressed on the "menu" button at the same time as pressing the middle button and it stopped. Then, i tried connecting it to my own laptop and on my itunes the ipod still did not show up and was not recognized. I have tried all of the computers in the house and my ipod will not show up. Its frusturating because it says "do not disconnect" whilst on the usb cable but still no luck with showing up anywhere. I have the latest version of itunes on all of the computers so that is not it. And i have considered trying to reset it, but the directions actually require for the ipod to show up on itunes for that, and since that is not happening are there any suggestions?
