My iPod is not recognized by itunes, it will only charge. I have tried everything. NEED HELP!!
Ok so here's what has happened. I had recently gone on holiday for several weeks, before that my 64GB iPod touch 4th Gen had been syncing fine. When I returned home and plugged it into my computer it would only charge. The autoplay pop-up asks to import pictures or use photoshop.
I have followed the troubleshooting advice on the apple website and have had no luck. I have checked the drivers and my ipod appears under Portable Devices.
I have the latest version of itunes as well and IOS 5.
If someone is able to help me it would be great.
Wow the customer service is even worse. Does Apple want me to go around jailbreaking my iPod now so I can use something that actually recognizes my product?

The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...

Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?

I had this issue. Basically, iPhoto would recognize my iPod Touch and my wife's iPhone, but iTunes would not. Thus, I knew it was not the USB cable or ports.
In one forum, I tried something and it worked.
In Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, I stopped iTunes Helper.
Then I downloaded and reinstalled a fresh copy of iTunes.
Once I restarted iTunes and plugged in my devices, they appeared just like they used to.

The Autofill feature of iTunes will not add audiobooks and podcasts to any iPod model. They can be manually added by dragging them to the iPod shuffle in iTunes.
For iPod shuffle (3rd generation), you must enable Manually manage music in the Summary tab to drag songs to iPod shuffle. Additionally, you can automatically sync audiobooks using the Music tab and sync podcasts using the Podcasts tab in iTunes.

When using iPod shuffle (1st and 2nd generation), if iPod shuffle is set to shuffle songs it will play all the audio files on iPod shuffle except audiobooks and podcasts1. To play an audiobook or podcast, set the switch on iPod shuffle to play in order .
When using iPod shuffle (3rd generation), podcasts and audiobooks will not be played when content is playedfrom All Songs. If content is played from a playlist synced from iTunes, audiobooks and podcasts will only be played if the iPod's switch is set to play in order . In addition to playlists synced from iTunes, iPod shuffle (3rd generation) will create a special playlist for each audiobook synced and one for podcasts. When accessing these special playlists, audiobook and podcast content will play whether the iPod is set to play in order or shuffle songs . Podcast are sorted by alphabetical order and then by episode date.

My iPod is NOT recognized by iTunes
My iPod worked with iTunes perfectly fine 3 days ago. Then, I got 2 iTunes giftcards for christmas. So I plugged in my iPod christmas day to the computer, but it didn't automatically open iTunes like it normally does. So I clicked on iTunes to use them and I noticed the store was lagging, so I thought "No big deal...probably a lot of people using it and it's just running slow..." Well the next day (yesterday) I tried opening iTunes and I got the "Itunes could not be opened because Itunes Library.itl does not exist" error. So I changed the library file to itl (WITHOUT BACKING UP) thinking it would allow me to now open iTunes, and guess what-it did open iTunes, only now all of my media and downloaded content is gone. Completely wiped clean off iTunes. Not even a single song left on it.
And you know what?
My 32 Gig iPod Touch STILL IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY ITUNES!!!!
I have tried unplugging and replugging the iPod multiple times, which does nothing. I have tried reinstalling iTunes MULTIPLE TIMES, which does nothing. I have even gone so far as to system restoring my computer 4 days back to a time when iTunes worked, which by the way-DID NOTHING.
So now I have lost all my media because of iTunes' crap errors, and now my iPod Touch won't even work with it anymore!
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? And is there ANY way I can get back the media and downloads I lost on iTunes? I noticed I can't re-download anything from my purchase history...which is REALLY STUPID if you ask me, seeing as I've already payed for it with my own hard earned money, why can't I just re-download from there?Wow the customer service is even worse. Need help? Some of my Ipods are not recognized by Itunes with my Windows 8 PC. (Ipod Nano 4th gen and Ipod Nano 6th gen), but on my Windows 7 PC, they work fine. My Ipod 3rd gen and Ipod shuffle work both on Windows 8 and 7 PC's. On the non-working Ipods, the Device sync test says "No device found". Already performed all of the Ipod device troubleshooting including reload Itunes, stop start Ipod device, changed drive letter...

reinstalled my windows operating system and decided to put on windows 8. After loading all of my music back into a freshly installed itunes, my 4th gen ipod is not recognized by itunes. My 1st gen ipod nano works with no problem. I can eliminate any problems with the cable and connection.
I've stopped and started the service, and also have performed cold reboots.
Nothing seems to have helped the situation.

My ipod touch is not recognized on itunes and will not turn on or even give me the battery sign that it is dead. I turned it off and it won't turn back on now. After I updated my ipod and my itunes, now the ipod is not recognized in itunes. I went through all the recommended steps; starting and stopping various programs on my control panel, turning ipod on and off, checking cables - everything short of standing on my head. In the process of all that, I realized that the menu/task bar on the upper left side of the itunes page was gone. It wasn't there when I started this odyssey and it still isn't there.. I uninstalled and installed itunes again. I have Windows 8. Still no menu and still not recognizing the ipod. My ipod is 32gb touch screen. Probably 3 years old or so. Was working fine before the updates......
