If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Once you have recovered the songs from your iPod and you are happy that everything back is safely back in iTunes then restore the iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Ipod will not update new songs from itunes

My ipod will not update new songs from itunes. I've purchased several songs from the music store, updated my playlists and as added some from my CD collection and they are not transfering from my library to my ipod.
I've tried numerous configurations under the preferences - ipod menue but still can't get them to transfer.
One error I occasionally get is "ipod cannot be updated because there is not enough free space to hold all of the songs in the itunes music library"
There is plenty of room on my ipod so I can't figure out why. It almost seems as if it is trying to copy all of my songs not just the new ones because all songs in my librbary are checked.

    Thank you for responding.
Doesn't it have to be on either manual or auto update? What other option is there?
I will try downloading latest updates.
I know it will work if I reset it (have done it a few times already). I just hate having to restore factory settings everytime I want to put a new song onthe ipod.

  • Ipod is not synching new songs

I have an Ipod Nano. I recently acquired a new laptop, and got Itunes loaded with no problem. I had some songs that I had backed up on an external hard drive, and I got those loaded onto my laptop and into Itunes with no problem. I've purchased several new songs from Itunes, and I want to transfer them from my computer to my Ipod. When I plug my Ipod into the USB port, it pulls up my Itunes library, and at the top it says "Synching Ipod. Do not disconnect". So I wait...and usually when it's synching, it shows the songs at the top as they're being transferred. It doesn't do that. About 3-4 minutes go by, it says "Ipod sync complete. You may now disconnect your Ipod", I do, but then the new songs are not on my Ipod. I have the settings so that it automatically syncs the checked boxes in the checked libraries. I don't understand why I can't add any new songs! I have authorized this new computer, and tried just about every different setting.
I had another new hard drive a few months ago (I haven't had much luck w/ computers lately), and when I plugged in my Ipod that time, it just erased my library and I started all over w/ what I had backed up. But this time, even when I tell it to "erase and sync", it won't.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

With that set of symptoms, I'd try checking on a Windows Drive letter confusion. See the following document for troubleshooting advice on that possibility:

  • I add songs to itunes, but ipod will not update!

I imported songs onto my itunes library. But when I plug it in the usb to update, it will automatically disconnect after 5 minutes, and the ipod will not update. I've tried adding all music, and just checked songs; both do not not work.
    I have version 7.0.0.7
I have about 50% of room left on my ipod.
    Any suggestions??

    Hello Rex225
The best way to resolve the issue is to remove the music from the iPhone and then download the purchase again using the steps in the following article.

  • Ipod will not update!!! Error (-50)  HEEEELLLLLLP!!!!!

My ipod will not update to manual when I click the box to update manual. The box under is checked as it should be but after about 40sec of "Updating Ipod" an error box pops up and says "Ipod could not update unknown error (-50)". In addition I am no longer able to play the songs from my ipod through my comupter. I am only able to play songs on my computer already through itunes. Please help.

im getting kind of the same problem. i got a new computer with vista on it, and i plugged in my ipod with all the songs on it, and i thought if i set it to put all the songs on my computer it would erase the ones currently on it. i started getting alot of errors saying there wasnt enough space on my 8gb nano, which there should have been enough space but since it wasnt deleting the music already on it.
after trying a few different setting i decided to try the restore button and it said it couldnt restore. so i closed itunes went to computer and into my ipod, enabled it so i could see hidden folders and then deleted all the F1, F2,F3 and so on folders and tried an update and it worked.
but something really strange then happened in itunes, it was on my purchased playlist instead of having just my purchased music it had three copies of all my purchased music, but there wasnt three files of each. itunes did this on my previous computer but it made new copies of the files.
it then worked just like it did on my old computer, but i noticed it wasnt working properly went i got all the album artwork and my new purchased music. now i dont really know what to do, do what i did before and delete the music manually or just wait untill the update in a "few weeks"
i hope this has been helpful to anyone else with similar problems.

    Hi,

After that I cant change the playlists I want on my iPod. And when I hit syncronize now, it just give a sign that my iPod is no longer connected to my pc....
I already tried resetting the iPod but it didnt help.

  • IPod will not load some songs

I have a few problems with my ipod. Apple just gave me a new ipod to replace the one that was having similar but not exactly the same problems. Its an ipod nano ( black). The problem used to be that the ipod would not update. Now it won't load one of the artists onto my ipod. It says my ipods software is too old. I downloaded the new itunes. Also, under my ipod summary, it says that my software is up to date. So theres a contradiction here. Also the summary says my ipod is formatted for windows. I own a mac. Whats the deal??

okay so you show plug it into itunes if you dont have it on your computer you can download it here http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
when it is pluged in on the left side there will be a device sign and under it will be the ipod drag the song from itunes to the ipod.
if that does not work there will be a tab called store and under it should be 3 sub tabs called itunes store, itunes match, and purchased
click purchased and all the song that you have ever bought show be there and just drag the songs you want over.
let me know if this worked

  • IPod will not update when plugged into computer?

Just recently my iPod with not update when I plug it into my computer. My iPod does not show up on my Mac or my iTunes. When I plug it in the screen shows the do not disconnect sign. I have tried to reset my iPod and checked for new updates, but they haven't worked. If anyone knows what to do that would be great.
    Thanks

Yes. Since I installed the new system software (10.4.6) update Sunday night, I cannot update any of my iPods except the iPod video. The iPods also do not show up on my desktop. The battery charges but that's all that happens.

i have over 5000 songs on my computer. Which is from songs bought from iTunes and from cd. i had all the songs on my iPod. went to download new songs and only 1500 songs are download . please help

Since all of your music came from your computer in the first place, then it should still be there and should be included in your backup copy of your computer.
" it told me when i pluged hers in 2 ipods could not use the same account"
This is not true.  You have misunderstood.
You can sync as many ipods/iphones/ipads as you like to one one library.

  • Ipod will not update even though itunes shows that copying is complete

    Good morning all,
Today I purchased an album from itunes and tried to copy it to my ipod. I have the manual set up where the ipod does not update automatically. Today as soon as I connected the ipod to the pc and itunes opened I saw in the display "ipod is updating do not disconnect". This was not supposed to happen since my settings are to manually update the ipod. Then I manually copied the new album, I saw that it was copying and checked the ipod and saw the music there. But as soon as I disconnected the ipod the music had not copied. any feedback will be appreciated.

  • HELP! iPod won't load new songs on my iTunes

My iPod has been having bizarre issues. It has been really screwed up since around August 13th, and it seems to work all right right now when I am merely playing it except that it sometimes skips over random songs. However, whenever I plug it into my computer, iTunes says that my iPod is being updated, but when it is finished and I unplug my iPod, there are no new songs. My ipod has 1090ish songs on it, and my iTunes has about 1157. I am really confused. Also, when I plug in my iPod to be updated, a tiny alert message comes up on my screen that says, "iTunes.exe - corrupt file
the file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes`Temp File is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."
Anyone know what that means and/or what I can do? Do I have to send my iPod in to get fixed?

I have the same error message
    "iTunes.exe - corrupt file
the file or directory \iPod_Control\iTunes`Temp File is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."
itunes deleted all my songs even though i have it set to manual and now I can't upload any songs to my ipod. furthermore it says i have 21.6 GB available out of the 27.8 GB capacity, yet i have no songs or movies or anything on it. If you figure out how to fix this problem please let me know.
