If you set up the Find My iPod service prior to the iPod going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, though it depends on a number of factors (the iPod is turned on, connected to a WiFi network, and has not had the Find My iPod service disabled). Log into icloud.com and go to the Find My iPhone section. Then contact the police, giving them any location information you get.
If you did not set up Find My iPod, then there is no way to track it. Notify the police and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPod (the iTunes Store, for instance).

This will take effect when the iPod comes online. greatkarliSorry, but unless you had the Find My iPod service, available as part of a MobileMe subscription, set up so that you could attempt to locate your iPod, there's nothing much you can do. There's no way to trace a device, so if a reward didn't do the trick (not surprising, since unless the iPod was found by someone honest, the finder could get a lot more than 50€ for it), you're probably just out of luck. Notify your local police and any lost-and-found departments in the area where you lost it, if you haven't already, and hope for the best. But you should resign yourself to the fact that it's almost certainly gone for good.

When ipod is stolen what mischief can new user cause?
I left my 30G ipod in an airplane seat pocket and it was not turned in. Can someone who keeps it and uses it cause problems for my account? Like downloading my 3000 or so songs to new computers and using up my authorized computer allotment? Any precautions I can or should take?

I'm sorry about your iPod. You need not worry though - the iPod itself doesn't contain any information related to your iTunes account. Even with the serial number, nobody can access anything of value.
I assume that you have already tried contacting the airline to see if they have found it?

My ipod was stolen, can I find out what the serial number of it is, based on looking at a connection history in my itunes? How would I do this? I didn't register it. I think I found the guy selling it, just looking to confirm the serial number and I'll make a phone call to the police.

What country are you in ? As long as they are still available in the store then apps can be re-downloaded from the store for free, and in a number of countries music can also be re-downloaded : re-downloading.
