My iPod isn't showing up in iTunes

I have a Second Generation iPod touch ( I know its old but a broke college student can't be picky) and it doesn't show up in iTunes anymore. I just bought some new music and now I can't import it to my iPod. Is my iPod no longer supported in iTunes because of its age or am I doing something wrong?

The second generation iPod touch cannot be updated beyond 4.2.1.
Instead of importing from iTunes, you can re download purchase for free right on the iPod > Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

I have a classroom set of iPod 4th gen that I am trying to update using a different MacBook than I had used previously. I am logged into my iTunes account for the ipods but the ipods do not show up on the computer. Ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Note that you can only sync with one computer/iTunes library. So if you update on a different computer the iPod is erased and replaced with the media in the iTunes library of the new computer.

Why isn't my iPod Touch (4G) showing up in iTunes or in My Computer??

Well my iPod Touch (4th Generation) was working great until yesterday. I was trying to update the software (iOS 4.3.3) and after 4 HOURS it tells me that it cannot install the update and now my iPod won't show up in iTunes or My Computer and it is showing the screen it usually does before you set it up. I checked the Device Manager...(Windows XP) and it's showing up as "Apple Mobile Device." I tried searching for hardware changes but nothing is working...I mean I am constantly fixing the iPods of other people but this time I can't even fix mine...oh and as a side note I did restart the computer and then after a while turned it off...I tried restarting my iPod too but to no avail. Please help!!!

Put the Touch into recovery mode, then it should be recognized so that you can do a Restore:

You can try putting it into disk mode to see if it makes it easier on iTunes to recognize it.
To put your iPod into disk mode:
1) make sure your hold switch is OFF (NO ORANGE SHOWING)
2) hold the menu button and the center button at the same time for about 6-10 seconds until you see an apple logo
3) AS SOON AS you see the apple logo, release the two buttons and hold down center and play/pause
4) If you've done this properly you should now see Disk Mode Ok To Disconnect with a checkmark (when connected to your computer you should see Do Not Disconnect with Disk Mode at the top)
After you have the iPod in disk mode...see if iTunes picks it up then.

Hey Apple Support Community. Previously iTunes allowed me to add songs individually to fill up my ipod bu right clicking and adding the song to the ipod by way of the "add song to playlist" option in the drop down box. Sunddenly my ipod isn't showing up as a playlist for easy transfer of manually selected songs? I've had to create a temporary playlist and use the "autofill" on the ipod screen to add the songs I want. It's kind-of tedious. What happened? Has iTunes changed the way you're allowed to fill up your ipod? Or is there some glitch in my ipod that iTunes can't see it so as to provide it as an option for being a playlist?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

"bu" should be "by"....fill up my ipod by right clicking...

I've read the instructions on how to restore, but i cant even do that since my ipod wont show up in itunes in the first place. what happened to that programm you could download to restore an ipod? does anyone know what i can do??? thanks in advance!

Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then connect it to your computer to restore it through iTunes. Is it recognized now?

I just updated to the newest version of ITunes well, not just but a few days ago. Anyway I have windows 8, and in ITunes my Ipod 5th gen will not show up. I have tried somethings such as unpluging repluging, going to services and restarting, basiclly everything on yoyutube, none still work. It's ***** to cause I just wanted to put music on my Ipod, if anyone has an idea of what to do please give some suggestions.

1. Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant:
If you haven't already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant (choose your iPod model from the list).
If the issue remains after following your iPod's troubleshooting assistant, follow the steps below.
2. Restart the iPod Service
3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
4. Empty your Temp directory and restart
5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
6. Change your iPod's drive letter
7. Remove and reinstall iTunes
8. Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items
9. Update, Reconfigure, Disable, or Remove Security Software
10. Deleting damaged or incorrect registry keys

all the sudden 2 of our ipod touchs wont show up in itunes the ipod nano we have does tho
it does show up im my computer as line 1 " apple ipod" line 2 "portable device"

i have tried reinstalling (following the correct steps apple gave) twice and i have the 64bit and this is 64bit computer

i have restarted ipod
battery is full
its plugged right into the computer (its not the cord i tested on another laptop ipods show up fine there)

and i havent installed any new programs that would affect itunes
in itunes all it says is
iTunes could not connect to this iPod.
