back up the device in icloud and restore it back to factory settings after doing so setup as new and see if the issue is still there. If it's not merge your icloud info back into your device by just loging in with your apple id after the the setup is complete.

but I suspect your going to first have to create a data recovery drive

to get your data off the machine,
then do a #20 to eliminate the bad sectors as that's why your getting the "pinwheel" it's getting a delay reading from the drive, right when your trying to log in too, what a bad spot for it to happen.

The question for you is, did you just change the email used in your original Apple ID or did you create a new Apple ID from the new email address. This is how to change the email in an Apple ID;

My iphone 4s keeps glitching and shutting off. It only does this when using face time and just started about 3 days ago with no "events" prior to this. Running current update and have not been experiencing any problems. Phone is 7 months old.

I would be concerned too if my iPhone was acting this way. It sounds like it is overheating and not holding a charge. I recommend following the steps listed below when experiencing an issue like this:
Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. I would like to know the exact error message when you sign in, in the meanwhile please try the following steps assuming its Windows, let me know if its a MAC:
1) Go to Start button>> Control panel>> Uninstall a program.

The I cloud on mu IPAd keeps reverting to my old password so that I cannot get mail. Sometimes this happens on my iPhone as well. I type in the correct password in the iCloud account and mail account under settings but it always reverts back and preventsme from getting mail. Can only retrieve mail from i cloud on my competer. Thanks!!!
