My Ipod mini will not sync...A duplicate file name was specified.  What does that mean?

My Ipod mini will not sync.  I get the message that A duplicate file name was specified.  What does that mean and how do I correct it so I can download my new purchases?
Thank you

Refer to my earlier reply, but here is a quick fix to the corrupted filesystem, which might work
Open My Computer
Right-click your iPod  -> click Properties.
Click the Tools Tab -> Error Checking ->
Check "Automatically fix file system error"
k Start.
Let the scan complete, eject your iPod and reconnect.
Good Luck!

Hmm.  It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache from the nominated folder that you have set up to sync photos to the devices.

  • Error "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified"

When I drag a song from my ITunes library to my Nano, an error pops up that says "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified." I've read on other boards that I should delete the IToner bundle, but there is no IToner bundle in ITunes plug ins, just a Quartz Composer Visualizer. ANy suggestions on how to keep the error message from popping up every time I add a song?

Drag the song from Library to the playlist window then drag it to Devices instead of directly from the Library.

  • Itunes says 'the ipod cannot be synced A duplicate file name was specified?

it says this - 'the ipod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified' every time i plug in my ipod, i have not downloaded a new itunes recently, nor do I have a new ipod, this came from completely out of the blue.

The solution i found to this problem is have windows hard drive recovery tool scan and repair the hard drive on you ipod. To do this, you need to configure itunes so it does not open when you plug in you ipod. Next, plug in your ipod, for windows 7 user a pop up should come up asking to scan and fix device. click yes and give it some time. after the tool in complete unplug you ipod, open itunes, plug your ipod in. if you still get the message, click restore, and start this process on more time. If you do not have windows seven or this pop-up does not appear manually go to you hard recover tool and have it scan your ipod. then follow the rest of the process.

  • Ipod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified (Ipod Classic)???

Whenever I plug my ipod classic in to itunes I receive the following message:
The ipod "ipod name" cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified
    I have tried the following:
    Renaming the ipod
Running Itunes as an Administrator with the UAC in windows 7 turned to the lowest level
Refreshing device manager to scan for hardware changes
    Restoring the ipod from Itunes
Resetting the ipod itslef (holding down the menu an dcenter buttons)
All of the above of course did not work. I did notice that when I would click ok on the "cannot be synched" message, Itunes would synch the ipod and I would see songs and podcasts on my ipod but they would not play at all.
Someone please help. Again, my OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. I have also tried this on my Windows 7 Professional 32 bit system with the same results. My itunes program on both computers is the latest

  • The iPod cannot be syned.  A duplicate file name was specified

After upgrading to iTunes 9.2.1.4, my iPod won't sync any longer and I have absolutely no music left on my device. This is very frustrating. I have seen many people post the same issue, but no answers from apple support, can you at least give me some suggestions as to whether or not you are working on it.
Or has anyone found a solution

I had exactly the same frustrating experience, my ipod would not sync with itunes 9.2.1.4. I was about ready to throw the whole thing out, until I just happened to change the cord connection between the ipod and computer. I had previously used the USB cord that came with the original ipod (4th generation) that was about eight years old. Without thinking about the USB cord, I mistakingly picked up the USB cord that came with my itouch. I plugged in the new cord, and suddenly the ipod quickly restored and quickly synced with itunes. Much to my complete shock, after working on the issue for three days, reading all of the forums, and trying everything, everything was solved in a matter of seconds. I suppose that the explanation is probably that I had been using an old 1.0 USB, and the new cord was a 2.0 USB. Actually, I don't know, but the speed of the new cord is the only explanation that I have for you.

  • IPhone not syncing, says dupicate file name was specified

Seems to sync some stuff, but then the sync fails and I get this error message near the end of the sync.
I think it may be when it is syncing photos from iTunes, but am not sure what is going on.
This is really frustrating. I am now on my last straw and am attempting a Restore of my iPhone 4 to see if that solves the problem.

A full restore seems to have solved it, though it sure took a while.
Wonder what was the cause of that. I think it was Photos, as if I turned Photos off it seemed to sync, but a restore seems to have solved it either way.

  • Error message "unable to sync, a duplicate file name was specified"

    Hi All,
I`m getting the above message when I try to sync my music library.
I have updated to IOS 5.  I had been receiving this message before the update, but I ignored it, because the library was syncing.  However after the update my ipod just displays "no content" where my music should be.  I am also unable to sync music purchased after the update.
Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Try and unchecking Manually manage music and videos on the summary page in iTunes. To get there, just go to ____'s iPod, scroll down, and it should be there. You can then check any other boxes (or uncheck) that you think might help you. That box might have automatically checked itself after the update. Also, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes by going to the apple in the top left hand corner, and clicking software update.

  • Everytime i try to sync on itunes the message "The iphone cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified" what do i do to rectify this?

I've done everything that the troubleshoot said to do but it still keeps coming up with it, what should i do?.

In some cases that error message can be triggered by a corrupt iPod Photo Cache folder. Deleting that folder, which is created inside the photos folder that is synced to the device should resolve. If that doesn't fix it then there is perhaps a different cache in the appdata folder that needs clearing.

  • Could not purchase. Duplicate file name was specified???

Hi, I kept getting that error whenever i tried to purchase anything on iTunes. I just downloaded the most recent version of itunes and it let me purchase one song... after that i got the error again. Any helpful suggestions?

I DID IT! I FIXED IT, FINALLY!!! At least it worked for me. Here's what I did: from Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features/Uninstall or Change Program, I right-clicked on iTunes and selected Repair. After that ran and completed, I went to Computer/Local Disk (C:)/Program Files. From the list, I right-clicked on iTunes and selected “Run as Administrator.” After that I tried to purchase music from iTunes, and it worked! I hope this makes sense and works for you. Good luck!

    Hello WGT52,
It sounds like this error message is preventing you from syncing your content to the iPod. I would recommend the troubleshooting steps in the following article:
