First, I'm sorry to hear of your exploding ipod. That's terrible! I'm just glad to hear that you weren't holding it at the time!
Second, regardless of your warranty status, call apple or take the ipod to an apple store if possible. I have heard of the Lithium Ion batteries exploding (not in iPods, but cameras and computers), which is what the iPod uses. I have heard of Apple helping people out with things like this even out of warranty. It doesn't hurt to ask. Explain to the person on the phone (if you call) exactly what you've posted and offer the pictures.
Good luck and please post back whatever happens

  • IPod Nano Exploded

Last night, my First Generation iPod Nano exploded in a plume of smoke and sparks while charging, after years of good service. The warranty is obviously out of date, but is there anything that can be done about this, or am I out of luck?

Your ipod exploded! Your definately not out of luck ipods shouldn't do that so take it to your nearest apple store and see what they have to say for themselves!

  • I don't have my iPod nano first generation because the battery exploded. How can I have it replaced in the recent iPod Nano Replacement Program?

I took the inflated iPod to the Apple Store where a genius said that the battery had expanded and it was no longer safe to use.  He said that sometimes happens with electronics and that I should dispose of it.  Although disappointed with that answer, I took it home where I then recycled it.  Anyway, now Apple is replacing this model of iPod Nano with the exact problem of problems with the battery.  However, I feel that it is a little late because the people who have already spent money replacing their exploded nanos have disposed of their first generations and cannot benefit from the program.
Don't get me wrong, I have been extremely satisfied with Apple in the past and even in the present.  However, I am unable to contact Apple to get help with this problem since I don't have a serial number.  I'm frustrated!

    Thanks!

  • IPod Nano Just Exploded!

    It was a bit terrifying.
Shortly after ejecting my iPod Nano (very first generation - preordered before its release) that was charging, I placed it on a table nearby. A short time later I heard a pop. When I looked over I saw that flames were shooting out of my iPod. This occurred for about a minute. I am fortunate that nothing caught fire as I was ready to grab my fire extingusher. After it stopped flaming, white smoke shot out for a few minutes. Now, I still smell the burnt insides of my iPod.
Has this happened to anyone else here? Also, how can I contact support for this as this is quite a major safety issue. Earlier today I used my iPod while working out and luckily I did not get burned by my iPod.
I contacted support online and they should call me tomorrow. It said that they will charge me because I am past warranty, but please let me know if there is another direct way to reach them without getting charged.

Hey thanks for the tip, but they actually contacted me very shortly after as I think they saw this posting. So they are going to investigate it and send me a new Nano.

  • 1st Gen Ipod nano

So I have a 1 generation ipod nano, I've heard reports about the battery exploding. I don't have proof of when I bought it and I'd like to get a refund and get a new one. Who could I email since my phone isn't working at the moment?

  • Ipod nano replacement program question

hi, i just heard about this replacement program since my iPod nano of at least 5 years, I believe, randomly exploded. Now, I wasn't hurt or anything, but does that in any way affect if I could get a replaced iPod nano?

    Hi lindsayfromspencerport,
I can say it is not a scam - Apple is definitely replacing the iPods.  Once I read the article and went to apple.com, that proved it.  Apple.com would never risk another class action lawsuit over this iPod.
My First Generation iPod was given to me at work for being the winner of a give-away drawing and about a year or so ago it overheated and erased all the info on the iPod.  Now it will only charge and drain the battery.  It no longer allows me to store any thing on it.
I am glad that Apple is doing this exchange.  I thought I was just out of luck and was glad I had not paid full price for it.  I love my Nano and used it constantly!!!
Just send your's in using the box and label they send you and give them 6 weeks like the apple.com website says, Apple will make good on their product.  Millions of people don't stand in line and wait weeks/months for their new products to arrive for no reason, trust me.  Oh, by the way, I know this for sure.....I work for a wireless phone service that has been dealing with Apple for Yearsssssssssssss.....and every year the same thing.  People will give anything to get a product with that apple on it.

  • I want my iPod nano back

I was told about the replacement iPod nano 1st gen replacement program and my iPod was elegible. First they said Apple would replace the battery. And now I find they are sendirng refurbished iPod Nanos 6th gen, any color.
I want to know if there is any way to get my old iPod nano back. It was working perfectly, it was almost new after all this years. I want to keep it. I assume the risk if it explodes, i've already been warned. I don't want the iPod 6th gen, I already have one. It's the iPod nano I like the less of all history.
Please Apple, since you haven't specified what would you replace with I want to have the chance to choose now and I want my old iPod nano 1st gen back, please, it's very valuable for me, my first iPod, don't dare to depiece it. It's it too late? Where can I email/phone? Nobody on the support lane can help. Pleaaaaseee!!!
BTW: iTunes Match works very poorly!

Sorry, but it is too late.  I am in the same boat, and I am NOT happy about it.  I asked your question and a dozen others when I was on the phone with Customer Support for about half an hour today.  The CS rep was very nice and really took time to talk to senior support managers and even the people in charge of the replacement shipments, but there was nothing positive he had to tell me...
Once they have your iPod, it is gone.  They have NOTHING in place to allow you get it back (not surprising) or to do anything else.  You cannot request a refurbished 1G (the ones they already had are long gone and they are NOT refurbishing the ones people are sending back... they are just removing the parts they can re-use to refurbish later gen nanos... so there are no 1Gs to be had), you cannot request a certain color (or request NOT to get a particularly ugly color) of the 6G, etc.  All you can do now is just wait to see what color square, ugly refurbished 6G they send you.
All you can do is call Apple and ask to lodege a complaint.  The CS rep filed a complaint for me, because if Apple had simply been honest and told people what the plan was upfront (hmmm... what a concept!), I would have kept mine (and would have been perfectly happy to do so).  I loved it, and didn't use it very often (so the battery risk was minimal)... and I would NOT have sent it back if I had known that I would NOT be getting a 1G back!

  • What's the best way to replace iPod Nano 1st Generation?

I have two iPod Nano 1st Generations. One from 2005 and one from 2006. The one from 2005 just works when it feels like it. Sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn't. And the one from 2006 recently exploded when it was charging. A silver bag (I'm assuming the battery) expanded and ripped the iPod apart breaking the plastic around the scroller.
Should I use that replacement program (I heard it didn't work for some) or can I just bring them to an Apple Store to replace them?

See if either qualifes under the 1G Nano recall.

  • My iPod just EXPLODED

So I was charging my iPod in my bedroom and I hear a hissing sound from my living room.  I walk in and there's a cloud of smoke because apparently my iPod Nano had just EXPLODED.  I'm not really sure what to do, should I try to notify Apple as a safety precaution?  My iPod's 7 years old so I don't know if newer models would be at risk, but it's scary to think about since I had just used it a few hours earlier.  Below are some pictures.

That isn't necessary at all, Apple is quite aware of this safety issue and has been for 2 years which is why they instituted a recall of 1st Generation Nano's that have the suspect battery, they had a likelihood of failing and causing just what the OP saw. This is briefly explained in the link I added and the OP has already discovered his was one of the units covered by this recall, both with the fire and the confirmation when he went to that link.
Contacting support would be a waste of time. He can however make a Genius Bar appointment at his nearest Apple Store to replace it faster.

  • My ipod battery exploded

    Hi folks,
I plugged in my I-pod nano to charge and sync over the weekend. I smelt a strange smell and when I looked over the casing was smoking and had completley warped! The I-pod is beyond use as the battery appears to have overheated and blown up.
I know back in 2008 there was a problem with a batch of batteries doing the same and Apple replaced faulty models. Does anyone know if this is still the case if your I-pod explodes? Luckily nothing caught fire and apart from burnt fingers no damage was done to anything else.

This has only been known to happen with first generation iPod Nanos.  I have not heard of it ever happening to any other model iPod.
Do you have a local Apple store you can take it into?

  • Can i have an ipod mini and an ipod nano on same account

My daughter got an ipod mini 2 christmas's ago and so we have an itunes account. This christmas my son got an ipod nano because they had discontinued the minis. My son likes a lot of the songs that my daughter had on her ipod and i really dont want to use all that money just to rebuy songs. I was wondering if there was any way that I could use one account and they both have the same songs on their ipods.
      Windows XP

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. One way is is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. You could create one playlist for the Mini and one for the Nano. Each playlist can have whatever songs you like in it drawn from the single library. Have a look at the article linked below: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer

  • IPod Nano 4Gb (2nd Gen) not detected by Windows or iTunes

I am hoping someone can help me with this as I am at my wits end.
When I plug my iPod into the usb port, it begins the charging process, but neither windows, nor iTunes will detect any new devices. I have tried the 4 R's (the fifth needs a connection with iTunes), putting it into disc mode, and even on 3 different windows computers, but no dice. To save the no doubt normal questions, The usb ports are 2.0, and brand spanking new, which i have tested sucessfully with other usb devices, so I know it's not the usb port. I have the latest drivers & updates installed, and the latest version of iTunes also installed.
    Other potentially useful info:
The model is iPod nano 4bg alu 2nd gen
It's not new, i was given it as a gift by a friend who upgraded to the video model.
Though I can't be sure, I suspect that the dock cable isn't an apple product. Given that *very few* places where I live sell official iPod accessories, it is difficult for me to check.
Like I said, i really hope someone can help me, I really don't know how long i can go listening to my friends rather dubious music tastes...

  • TS1363 My ipod nano 5th generation is no longer recognized by itunes, and won't play any of it's music.  It still shows it all listed, but freezes up if you select a song to play.  Is there a way to restore it?

My ipod nano 5th generation will no longer play any of it's loaded songs.  It still plays the video that is on it, and the radio works.  It is not recognized by itunes and I have gone through all their help steps.  Is there some other way to restore it?

If the iPod is defective and not abused Apple will exchange it at no cost under your warranty.

My ipod nano is no longer recognized by itunes after I installed windows 8.1.  The ipod nano still is recognized and works with a Windows 7 computer

    Hello, Pete.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when an iPod is not recognized by iTunes or the computer.
iPod not recognized in My Computer and in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369
Usually the resolution is updating the Apple Mobile Device Driver.  See the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.
