My ipod nano is frozen

Just recently bought a Ipod Nano, a friend downloaded music on it.  I played Ipod until battery was completely dead. It never came back!  Plugged into charger on wall socket and in to computer.  It is frozen!  Tried holding pause button and neg. volume button at same time.  No luck.  Any suggestions

If you just bought it, it is under warranty (for one year), so in the worst case, you'll need to contact Apple to get it replaced.
You are using an Apple USB dock connector cable to connect it to a power adapter and USB port on computer?  When you say it is
completely dead. It never came back... It is frozen
are you saying it does not charge when connected to power and the screen is blank (not on)?
Tried holding pause button and neg. volume button at same time.
This is a current iPod nano (?), because it does not have a physical "pause button."  This is the procedure to Reset an iPod, which you should try while it is connected to power.

  • IPod Nano 4G frozen at language screen. Tried holding down menu-click without success. Have gone through restore process, but it continues to stick at the language screen. Intel iMac 3ghz, OS X 10.6.7, iTunes 10.3.1 (55).

I have a frozen iPod Nano 4G. After syncing it gets stuck at the language screen and cannot proceed any further.
I have tried holding down the Menu and click buttons for >6 seconds, without luck. Have reset to factory settings and re-syncd, but it keeps getting stuck at the language screen.
I suspect it is the latest version of iTunes causing the problem, as I just installed it a couple of days ago and this is the first sync since the update.
    24" Intel iMac 3ghz C2D, OS X 10.6.7, iTunes 10.3.1 (55).

+Do you have access to, another Firewire enabled Mac, that you could use, to attempt a retrieval of data, using Firewire Target Disk Mode?+
A question on this Firewire Target Disk Mode - If I could get access to another Firewire enabled Mac and connected the two together, host #2 to Target #1, with a Firewire cable (6-pin to 6-pin), and power the two up, even though #1 would not be booted up to the desktop but just have the hard drive powered up, would the hard drive of #1 be accessible to #2? If so, would I be able to perform any repairs or do anything to the drive to enable it to bootup the #1 computer? This would be similar to when I remove and hook up a 2.5" IDE-ATA PC laptop hard drive to another PC computer, usually a desktop, via a drive adapter and USB 2.0 cable, as an external drive. When I do this in a PC, it's usually one that is unable to boot up to Windows due to malware or other problems. I am able to see the files and folders on the #1 computer's hdd and then clean out any malware (virus/spyware), or add/replace any corrupt/damaged Windows files that might be keeping the #1 computer from booting up. After that, I can usually return the hdd to the #1 computer and boot up normally to finish any clean up or change any settings.
I had considered taking the hdd out of this damaged iMac computer and attempting to hook it up with a PC, but after seeing how difficult it is to get to this hdd and not sure of what I'd do when and if I did get the two connected together, I put the idea way back as a last resort. I wasn't sure I'd even be able to see any folders or files on the Mac hdd due to the differences between OS X and WinXP. And, after reading that Macs aren't susceptible to malware, I didn't know what I would be accomplishing.

Are you sure that the iPod isn't dead on battery? Try leaving it charging for 3 horus on your USB port.
Have you tried connecting your iPod to your computer for about 10 seconds, then disconnecting it right afterward?
Also, be sure to try the resetting quite a few times. Sometimes, after alot of attempts, the iPod will work again.
If your iPod doesn't even seem to be responding to resetting, please check that your "hold" switch isn't on. (orange-colored). If it is, switch it to off (grey-colored area).

  • HT1320 My ipod nano is frozen and I cannot reset it.  How do I reset my ipod?

I have an ipod nano that I purchased in 2009.  I believe it is a 5th generation.  It is frozen and I cannot reset it.

    Hey there Tricia9170,
It sounds like you are unable to use the iPod Nano becuase it is unresponsive. Verify that this is the reset you have performed:
    To reset your iPod:
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If so, try restoring it with the following steps in iTunes:
Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure toback up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.
    How to restore your iPod:
    1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
    2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
    3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes. If the iPod's display doesn't show "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" you may need to put the iPod into disk mode to proceed.
    4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
    5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
    Note
: For Mac users, A message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator's name and password.
    6. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
    7. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
    8. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Hold down the volume down and sleep wake button (the big one) till you see the apple logo. You should be good to go after that.

  • Ipod nano screen frozen, even in usb connection?

My son's ipod nano 4th generation is completely frozen.  it cannot be turned off.  Plugged into various usb ports with different connectors and this makes no difference.  Tried holding keys down etc.  Nothing works.

Try a hard reset.  To do this, toggle the hold switch on and then off, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  This may or may not work the first time around, so don't be afraid to try it more than once.

  • Ipod nano clickwheel frozen on radio.

Menu does not work nor right advance button. I tried to reset by pressing menu and center button 10 sec. Did not work. Help?

    Hi earthford,
Follow all of the steps below (pay particular attention to the part in red):
Note: If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the
Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the
finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure
that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the
    center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power
adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer
is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.  Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to power.
If you have tried all of these steps, and have repeated step 2 several time and still no luck:
    iPod not responding
If your iPod does not respond to these steps, see these additional troubleshooting steps—

  • My Ipod Nano has frozen, cannot be recognised by PC or Windows+wont charge!

I got my Ipod Nano christmas day and it worked perfectly- no problems at all. I came home boxing day, and charged it on PC ( all the itunes were installed) and it worked fine. The day after (today 27th) I used it around 9 O'clock in the morning, it worked perfectly and charged fine. I left it on my bed and went out about 11 O'Clock. I came back around 3 O'Clock and it wouldn't work. It won't switch on, charge up, and my PC and Windows doesn't even acknowledge it when i plug in the USB port. I have tried all my USB ports, pressing the buttons simoutaenously like it mentions in the support, but nothing!
I have no idea what to do! Can anyone help at all please! Thankyou x

I'm having this problem, as well.
I got my iPod Nano 4GB back in May and it worked for about two months. I then stopped using it for about three months or so. I wanted to use it this past week and I'm having the exact same problems that are listed above.
A message comes up on my iPod with the support URL on the Apple website (http://apple.com/support) and that's all that appears (I've tried to restart and charge it both by computer and charger, but the same message appears). After plugging it into the computer, the iTunes program registers the iPod but, after unplugging it from the computer, the support message reappears.
I've gone to the support link and tried everything on it, but nothing changes and the message still appears.
After pressing the centre and play buttons on the iPod, a new message appears. On the top of the screen, it says "Disk Mode" with a half-full bar on the right, where it usually is (but the bar was completely empty earlier today, for whatever reason). In the centre of the screen is a checkmark with "OK to Disconnect" underneath it. When this screen appears (and the screen doesn't light up when this message comes up), I can't get rid of it, until I plug the iPod into the charger. Once again, the support message comes up.
I really don't know what to do, but I've seen several messages similar to this problem throughout the Apple support forums. I agree with Sporky that, if these problems keep on occuring, they should recall these iPods.
Any help would be highly appreciated!

  • My ipod nano is frozen, but my hold switch is broken so I can't reset it.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. When I plugged it into my computer to sync it it said I had to restore it.  I clicked restore, but it said the ipod couldn't be found and then my ipod froze. I can't reset it because my hold switch no longer works and toggling it doesn't do anything.  Is there a way to fix it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

My Ipod nano is displaying a huge check mark and it says "ok to disconnect". It is also locked in disk mode. It isnt charging or responding to any buttons I press. How do I exit the disk mode? Will someone please help me?

Reset your iPod: hold the "menu" and "select" (center) buttons together for 7 seconds. Then the Apple logo will appear on screen. This should exit your iPod out of disk mode.
