My iPod nano won't switch off

I've just bought a nano iPod and for some reason unknown to me it won't switch off. Everytime I hold down the menu button nothing happens, or when something does happen, the apple logo comes on the screen for a few seconds (as it does when you reset the iPod) then it goes back to the 'home' screen on the iPod again. I've tried the '3 R's to sort this out, and since I updated my older iPod as well, that has refused to switch off too. PLEASE help me.

Everytime I hold
down the menu button nothing happens,
Hi,
Is that a typo? You press the play/pause button to turn it off

  • IPod Nano Won't Switch On

A few days after Christmas I bought myself a pink, 4GB iPod nano. It has been working fine up until today.
I was listening to it last night, and I turned it off and put it on hold. When I got up this morning and tried to turn it on, it wouldn't (yes, I have took it off hold =P). I thought that was weird, since it had half a bar of battery the night before. I tried to charge it on my windows computer with the USB charger, but it didn't come up in iTunes or Windows, and the display on the iPod was still black. I blew on the bottom of the iPod where the charger goes, onto the charger itself, onto the USB bit of the charger, and the USB on the computer. I tried again. Nothing. So, I attempted to reset it (pressing the middle and play buttons together), but that didn't work either. I tried putting it on hold and off hold a few times, with no responce.
Now what? I'm really starting to panic now as I don't know where the receipt is.
Also, I haven't put any songs into iTunes this morning that weren't on my iPod last night, and the pictures on it are all from either my phone or my digital camera, so it shouldn't have been affected with any dodgy files...
Help, please? Please reply ASAP, I'm panicking now.

    You weren't resetting correctly.
To reset press and hold the MENU and SELECT (center) buttons until you see the Apple logo.
See if you have better luck with that.
    Cheers!

  • My iPod Nano doesn't switch off !!!

    Hello!
I have a big problem: my iPod is 2 weeks old, and I can't put it off !!! So I have to wait that the battery is empty, and when I switch on it, this is the same thing...
Help me please!!! I've tried everything

Yes, I've tried this, and I tried to install the 2006-23-03 version of the software...
But I don't know how to enter in the diagnostic menu, and I think that will be a good thing to know what's happened

  • MY 1st GEN IPOD NANO WON'T TURN OFF IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

It just seems to have a problem recognizing when i'm pushing the play/pause button or if I'm trying to shut it off. It has had water damage is their any way to make it shut off. PLEASE.

Hi, i had the same problem with my 1st gen 4GB nano. I solved it by chosing not to visualize the clock on the ipod display. you can change this option from the ipod prefernces. Apparently visualizing the clock on the display triggers some kind of bug.... Don't ask me why or how, but it worked! good luck:)

  • Ipod Nano won't turn off anymore

Since a view days i can't shut down my ipod anymore. I tried to reset is, used the updater and even used the restore option.
But everytime i turn it off it goes on in about 5 seconds on its own. It only shuts down when the battery is empty.
I hope it's just an software error:(

    Hello Marcel,
And welcome to Apple Discussions by the way,
Why isn't there a button for ''this doesn't help me at all''?
    Because that would be rude.
Because this wasn't very helpfull since i've read all the help and support stuff from the apple website.
If that is the case, you should have mentioned that in your original post. How would we know what you have and have not tried? We all have to start somewhere when it comes to troubleshooting these kinds of issues.
I think it is a hardware problem since non of the software fixes work.
If you already know what the problem is, you should know what steps to take next. If you have a warranty, take advantage of it now. If not visit your closest Genius bar and have them take a look at or set it up to be serviced, either through Apple or a third party repair company.
    Best of luck.

my ipod nano won't trun off either sometimes.. when that happens i have to hit play and have it play a song for a couple of seconds and then do the thing to turn it off andfthen it turns off.

  • My Ipod nano 7th generation turned off and won't turn back on. what should I do?

my Ipod nano 7th generation turned off and won't turn back on. what should I do?

If you have done the reset and nothing appears and you are sure it still has a charge and it doesn't turn on, you may request for a replacement if it still covered by the warranty. Cheers!

  • IPod nano 3rd gen turnes off and on by itself

I have a problem: my iPod nano 3rd generation turns off and on by itself every 5-7 seconds.
How can I solve this problem?

Is there a case around this iPod? It might be pushing on the touch wheel. Does it happen when you flick the lock switch? If so it seems like a restore is in order

  • Ipod Nano will not turn off

My ipod nano will not power off. Even the sleep button does not work. I have reset everal times. Any thoughts?

I've been through 4 of those R's, as well as the Quick Fix and about 5 hours on the phone with Apple. It will now turn off, but it is still not visible to iTunes and the iPod updater won't run because it also can't see the iPod. Windows sees it just fine, so now I'm awaiting a 3-5 day response from an Apple engineer about what is wrong. This all started when I installed the 6.0 update. I'm now back to the older software, but it still won't reconize my iPod, so therefore will not update it with new songs, etc.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:

  • HT1435 my 3rd generation iPod nano won't charge

My 3rd generation iPod nano won't charge and when i connect it, it shows up charging then the screen goes black and wont work. Can i get it replaced for a new one? or a different one? What can i do?

    Try these steps listed below.
    1. Run “c:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc” (i.e. *Device Manager*), and leave it open for now for later use
    2. Start up iTunes
    3. Next, connect your iPod.
    4. Go to your iPod Settings and select the “Enable disk use” option from under theSummary tab.
    5. A dialog box will pop up reminding you that you’ll need to manually eject. Go ahead and hit OK
    6. Hit Apply to save changes to the iPod
    7. Quickly switch to the Device Manager window and right-click on any item within the window and select “Scan for hardware changes”
    8. Finally, switch back to iTunes, and try re-syncing your iPod to see if it helped.
It might not also hurt to trash your iPod's Photo cache if it has one (i.e. you sync photos to the iPod).  See this article for information on where to find this folder on your Windows XP machine.

  • IPod nano has trouble turning off

    Hi!
I have a second gen 4g iPod, and I have so much trouble turning it off! Sometimes, it takes like 10 tries before I can get it to turn off. I've tried turning it off on a hard surface, but that doesn't work.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi cgmv,
There are a few things that you can do with an iPod that won't turn off.
First of all, be sure that your "Hold" switch isn't turned on (the hold switch is located on the top of your iPod).
Then, after you’ve verified that your iPod’s Hold switch isn’t on, here a few things to try:
-- Reset the iPod. Be sure you're doing it the correct way: Press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for about 5-10 seconds.
Be sure to also try connecting your iPod to a power source while doing this step, as it can be more effective.
-- Try toggling the Hold switch. Flip the "Hold" switch on your iPod (located on the top) back and forth several times.
If a bit of "regular toggling" doesn't seem to do anything, try this:
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - Now begin to rapidly toggle the "Hold" switch back and forth while your iPod is connected.
3 - After you've done that for a little while (for perhaps 15-20 seconds), eject the iPod if needed, then disconnect it from your computer.
-- Try letting your iPod's battery drain out. Use your iPod enough that its battery finally goes completely dead, asking for you to re-charge it.
At this point, connect your iPod to your computer's USB port, or connect it to a charger, and leave it there for a couple of hours.
Now see if your iPod will turn off after trying that.
-- If none of these work, you might want to try Restoring your iPod. Note that this does delete all the contents off the iPod, but often clears up iPod issues you might be facing.

  • Won't switch off

My iPod doesn't always switch off and won't re-set sometimes either.
Also, when i connect through USB1.0, sometimes it connects (undertstandable as slower port), sometimes it doesn't. Same with charging. When i manage to connect it, i can't d/c it - have to just pull cable as i press d/c iPod and it instantly reconnects.
Won't charge through wall charger either.
    Please help!

It also may be possible that your charger is a
different voltage from the US-Wales. When I go
somewhere else out of the US, my cord dosen't work
    either.
It's the charger i bought in the US..I think it may have got damaged in travel perhaps. I tried it with my UK plug and an adaptor with no luck. This is gay happening away from home! Chargers are multi-voltage so should work everywhere in the world.
I just cant work out if its an iPod fault or me! I have had no luck with them (My mini has been to apple twice)
My 5G is only a few weeks old.
