Even new purchases are not always fully up to date. Check and see by going to Settings > General > Software Update and see if it says it is up to date or not.
Also keep in mind that you need a WiFi connection for FaceTime.

Iphone 3gs is not working at all

i got my dad's old Iphone 3gs, and wanted to deleate all content and settings.
once i did so, it got black-screened for about 2 hours, then the apple logo appeared, and it just froze. it's been like that for about 24 hours now, obviously not working.
i tried reseting it by pressing the sleep buttun and home button, but all it did was go black, then the apple logo would come back again with the litlle blinking "thinking" circle, and freeze again after aprox. 10-15 seconds.
tried connecting it to the computer so that maybe my itunes would recognize it, but it had no effect.
what can i do now?

Make sure the battery is charged before trying to sync with your computer.

Make sure your iTunes software is up to date. Launch iTunes. From the menu bar click iTunes / Check for Updates.

Replacements are same model, size, and color. 99.9999999% of the time there is no exception and the exception is always Apple's decision. This has only ever happened when Apple does not have sufficient quantities of service units for replacement of a specific model.
Apple does not offer "upgrades" or exchanges during the warranty replacement part. If you want a newer model, you must purchase it at full retail (or subsidized price from your carrier if you qualify).

It sounds like at some time the device was hacked to be able to work with the carrier you were using. Are you using a different carrier now than you were using before? Restoring a hacked device would restore the carrier lock that was on the phone. If you are seeing that particular error, the only alternatives are to either use the carrier it is locked to, or contact them to see if they provide unlocking services and if you qualify for unlocking.

IPhone 3gs wifi not working

I'm using an iPhone 3GS and an airport express (the first version to have 802.11n capability) with the latest firmware/iOS on each. I've set up my airport express which is working fine with my macbook. When I go to connect my iPhone to the network, I can go into the WiFi settings, find the network, enter the password, but then instead of connecting all the way, the "loading spinner" just sits next to the network forever and the top left corner of the screen continues to say "3G". I can use Airport Utility on my phone to manipulate the airport settings and I can even use AirPlay, but for data my phone continues to rely on 3G. I've tried turning off cellular data, at which point the "connected to WiFi" icon shows up at the top of the phone, but no app is able to use any data functions (safari says I'm not connected to the internet).
I know my router is working fine since I'm able to connect with my laptop and use the internet as I always would. I've tried changing channels, making sure that 802.11 b/g is enabled, "forgetting the network" in my phone, restarting my phone, restarting the router, and restarting the modem, and trying to connect my phone when it is the only device on the network. Any thoughts on what else might be causing this problem?

Open the setup page of rouer,under the security tab..Uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...Under the Wireless tab,click on the subtab Advance Wireless Settings tab and Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

Camera on new iPhone 3GS does not work

My husband got a brand new iPhone 3GS yesterday from the iShop here in Gateway Durban, and the camera does not work at all. You can see through the lense, but non of the touchscreen controls work (ie access to camera roll, take picture, swap to video.) Am I missing something obvious? This is perculiar, in that it is his second iPhone and I have the iPhone 4 so you would think between us we would be able to figure it out, but it does seen truly STUCK. Any ideas?

i just got a new iphone 3GS yesterday and i took the plastic that wraps around the phone off. The lady i bought it from said if there is plastic on it it might not type right. so is there another coating of plastic on it?? whenever i type the keyboard doesnt do what i want. for example if i type backspace it types the letter p. some letters dont work and if i hit one letter a different letter on the otherside of the keyboard gets typed instead. is there something wrong with the phone or is there a coating of plastic im not able to get off? should i return it or what...?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. If you've been through ALL these steps sequentially and you still have the problem, then you'll need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar and have your phone evaluated.

Hello, I've got a question about my Iphone 3gs. Well one day i woke up and i tried to slide to unlock my phone but the touch was unresponsive. So, i turned off my phone and back on, the unlock screen came back one and same problem happened. The only time the touch works is when I slide to turn off my phone. When people call me, i can't answer. When people text me, I can't answer. I do have the latest update for the phone. I've looked everywhere on the internet and have got no answers. I have dropped my phone a couple of times and it does have some cracks on the screen. Please help!

I found this thread awhile ago, but there wasnt much follow-up on this from Apple, Go to a Genius Bar, plus people in this thread have said that they did that and nothin has worked, or the Mac Genius suggested it might just need the SIM card replaced… I really dont think that would help

So… Apple can you guys just give some clarity on whats is up with this, I mean I am loyal and keep buying your products, but it is only fair that you share just a lil bit of info like: "an update is coming soon to fix this or its a hardware issue, come on in and it will be resolved."

It sounds like you are unable to turn on your iPhone 5s. I would recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get the issue resolved:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
