My iPod only outputs right channel sound...

This issue has been plaguing me for a while now, but my iPod's finally had it and is absolutely not outputting sound out of one channel. The left channel in this case. Previous fixes mainly were to press on the iPod in various places, looking for that sweet spot. Once this spot was found, sound would start playing out of the left channel again.
This solution no longer works.
So, what do I do now? My Warranty's long expired, so...

have you trouble-shot the problem using different sets of headphones to make sure it really is your ipod that's broken, and not just the headphones? if so, iresq is the way to go.

  • Speaker jack only plays right channel

    Hi everybody,
since a few days when i plug my speakers or earplugs into the speakers-jack, only the right channel has been playing. I already checked "balance" in the system preferences - it is centered.
Can someone help me with this?
    Thanks.

Hey thanks for replying so quickly. Could have been the solution (jack in/out too often). Though my problem was solved in a different way a minute ago:
After plugging in my earplugs again i just realised, the balance-settings automatically change depending on which output you use. So some days ago I must have been dragging the balance-fader to the right and unplugging the speakers then the system auto-saved.
So you always have to check "System Preferences / Audio" with the plug inside the jack.

  • Power Mac G5 Audio is outputting only the right channel

I have an audio problem with my PowerPc Audio card, I presume. It is only outputting the right channel. I have a set of computer speakers and when I go into System Preferences and move the balance slider, there is only sound coming from the right channel. Absolutely nothing from the left.
I found this problem when editing in FCP and needing to do a split track with VO on channel 1 and Nats and music on channel 2. I could see the meters showing the audio output from channel 1 but no sound coming through the Mac's left channel output.
Also, I have a DeckLink extreme card in my system and when I test the L-R channel output I get the same problem. I do not know if the decklink is somehow using the Mac audio card for help with its output. I would think that it is using its own hardware for generating the audio output from the card.
Hardware issue? Time for a Mac Genius repair? Don't know if there is any workarounds or fixes before I go that route. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Doug

No I didn't but I run my Mac's output into an analog mixer and then out to my speakers.
When outputting through channel 2 only, both speakers work, yet when I pan to channel 1 the sound drops out. As I pan from full channel 2, where both speakers are up full, you can hear the sound fade out.
Also, I got the Deck Link card to work through my mixer. The L and R channels are outputting through separate inputs in the mixer and work independently and correctly. I even changed out the mini stereo cable just in case and still no left channel out of the Mac.
Very weird! I've even repaired and defragged my system disk in case it is some sort of corrupted code. Just grasping at straws before I take it to a Mac Genius.
Thanks for writing. I appreciate any and all suggestions.

  • Docked iPod only outputs sound during video to TV

I have a 5G iPod in an Apple dock, connected to my TV using a Monster audio cable and an S-Video cable. For some reason, it only outputs sound during videos or a photo slide show - not at all for music only playback. I'm baffled! Any idea why? It's a Panasonic plasma, and I've tried three different inputs. None work for music, but video is fine.

The iPhone 4, unlike iPod, doesn't ask you to set for PAL or NTSC.  In fact, in the SETTINGS/Video menu it only asks if you want to "Start Playing From Beginning", "Closed Captioning" and "Home Sharing".  I was surprised it had no settings like the iPod at all.

  • Sound ONLY in right channel from minijack

    Hi
I have a 1.5 GHz 15 inch aluminum powerbook g4, exactly one year old, in perfect working order.
For quite some time now, I've noticed the audio in my bose media mate speakers (1.0) from the left channel has been a bit crackly at times. I thought it was the speaker...I would jiggle the connection and that appeared to do the trick.
The other day, the left channel completely went out. Being the handy man I am, I decided to cut the wire to the left channel speaker and try replacing the connector (as I thought this was the issue). It was, of course, not.
Then, today I went to plug in headphones, and noticed the same thing. NO AUDIO from left channel.
Please note, however, that there appears to be stereo sound coming out of the powerbook's internal speakers.
I have been through sys prefs> sound, and utilities > audio/midi setup, messed around with all the settings....no use. I have the current version 10.4.7 software.
If ANYONE has an thoughts/input/solutions, it is always greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

Sounds like your minijack is shot, either the jack itself (unlikely) or the jack's connection to the computer.
Unless you very handy and comfortableopening up your computer, you may want to take it in and have it repaired.

  • Audigy 4 Pro - can only get 2 channel sound via SPDIF/optical connecti

I have two PC's, one with an Audigy 4 Pro and one with an Audigy 2 Platinum (A2P), I have my 5. speakers hooked up to the A2P and the A4P connected via the SPDIF to the A2P, I would expect to get 5. - both are setup to use 5. speakers, (I know that as a standard Digital coax/optical connections should handle multi speaker configs my entire A/V sound system (7. Dolby) uses optical and coax and it works fine).
If I run the channel test on the Audigy 4 I can get nothing but sound through the left and right speakers, if I run the test on the Audigy 2 (speakers direct connected) the sound is fine, if I reconnect the speakers to my Audigy 4 I get sound on all speakers so it looks like its an issue with the SPDIF and optical inputs (I tried both).
I have emailed tech support, I'm waiting for them to come back and tell me that the Audigy 4 cannot transmit more than two channels down the SPDIF/optical outs, thats my suspicion anyway, if that is the case then I'm not going to be a happy man and the Audigy will be going back to the store. Could be a driver problem of course as I cant believe they would implement Dolby and THX and only transmit two channels on the optical outs, that would be a bit dumb considering the primary use for digital connections is sound system interconnects.
Anyone with any ideas about this let me know, perhaps theres a hidden setting somewhere or a registry setting that switches the digital outs to carry all signals.

Just before everyone kicks off, heres a response I got from a tech guy at Creative themselves.
If you connect speakers to your sound card using a digital cable
(RCA/SPDIF or optical) then the software speaker test will only output
from two speakers. The reason for this is that the speaker test signal is
not in AC3 nor DTS format.
The signal on a digital connection is either
Optical SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
RCA SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
If you play AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS encoded signals, the amplifier
decodes this and outputs it to all 6 speakers (5 satellites & subwoofer)
    discretely.
When playing back stereo signals (such as Wav/CD Audio or MP3/WMA files)
the amplifier may generate 5. output based on the incoming stereo PCM
signal, provided Dolby Pro Logic decoding is available and activated.
Therefore the speaker test should not be relied on when using RCA or
    Optical digital connections.
This applies to all speaker systems equipped with RCA or Optical digital
    connections.
This makes sense to me and I'm pretty happy with it, basically as the reply says above the speaker test does not encode to AC3 hence if you hook two Audigys together and run the test you only get 2 channel output, if you play a DVD which is AC3/DTS encoded on one Audigy and listen to speakers hooked up to the other when both Audigys are connected via SPDIF or optical you should in theory get full playback on all speakers. Hopefully
    Cheers

  • Apogee Duet/ Logic 8 - Lose Right Channel Sound When Recording

Hi all. Using Logic Pro 8.0 on an Intel iMac, OS 10.11, with 2 Seagate Ext. FW Drives with an Apogee Duet.
Here's the problem that's recently developed and reoccurring more frequently when recording into Logic:
I plug guitar or a mic into channel 1 of the Duet ( have double checked everything connection-wise - all good)
I hear the signal from the input in both ears... everything fine so far.
I record or rehearse and all is well.
I stop the playback and then I only hear/monitor my current instrument or mic in one ear (usually the left - the right channel disappears. This has nothing to do with the headphone or speaker connections as all pre-recorded tracks are still coming out in stereo (both ears).
Sometimes if I just press play and stop, the missing side will reappear, but not always.
If I was just recording into channel 1 of the Duet and I encounter the problem, I physically unplug the source and put it into channel 2 and re-arm the input and/or the record and then I have 2 sides again... strange.
As well, when I use a Logic session template under this same setup, I can hear my guitar in both ears , but the moment I mute an effect in the channel strip I'm playing through... boom.... one ear/side is gone. I can only get it back by unmuting the effect or going through the above mentioned unplugging routine.
To sum up, I should be able to simply monitor my guitar or mic input in both ears (stereo) without it disappearing randomly. I know a guitar/mic is mono but you should be able to have it coming out both sides. It always worked until the Duet started acting up.
Lately, I also have been hearing strange artifacts and phasing when monitoring a LIVE source back through the Duet... this is intermittent but becoming more frequent. Previously recorded tracks are sounding ok.
Any tips or similar experiences? I'll give Apogee a buzz and see what they can offer.
    Thanks all.
    Dave

    Hi,
Thanks for offering your tip... much appreciated. When setting Mono versus Stereo, are you referring to the little "circle" icons at the bottom of the channel strip, next to the "I" (input monitoring)?
I did have it set to mono, with a single meter in the mixer window channel strip and still had the right channel disappearing suddenly problem. Speaking of the mono/stereo circle icons, why is it that some channel strips show these icons but others don't? I have two guitar tracks that both play back fine, but one allows access to the mono/stereo select icon but the other doesn't display it. They're both identical in every other way.
My feeling is that this could be a Duet problem because of the thin phasey ring modulation sound and level changes that will appear suddenly while monitoring a clean input source moments after everything was just fine.
Maybe this is because I'm still on 8.0 and Tiger? I'm in the middle of a project and can't risk update problems right now. What do think about the latest Logic with Leopard....safe to do and still have access to previous Logic 8.0 session files?
    Thanks for your kind advice!
    Cheers,
    Dave

  • 80GB ipod only outputs in black and white

I just bought a new 80GB 5th Gen iPod and hooked it up to my TV and it only outputs the picture in Black and White. If I take my old 60GB 5th Gen iPod it will output a picture no problem in color with the same TV and the same cable hooked up the same way.
All TV out settings are the same:
TV Out: Ask (I turn to ON)
    NTSC
    Widescreen On
Cable: Apple's iPod AV Cable M9765G/A
The weird thing though is if I take my new 80GB 5th Gen iPod and hook it up to my "MyVu" headsup display, it displays in color. It just won't do it on my TV.
Why won't it display color on my TV?

Try a different Video file on the 80 GB;to see if any changes? Are there any other title;s Videos are Podcast,
TV Shows that will playback in color-- if so It's possible that your file format is not compatible.
Check to see how the video files are define by format, frame rate etc; that your using as a reference to playback on TV.
See if you have any other Video's on the 80GB that will play in color.
Make sure your 80GB is using Itunes Version 7.0 or higher

  • Macbook headphone output, right channel weaker than left.....

I use my macbook connected to my stereo amplifier using a mini jack to stereo connector. I have started to notice isses though. It seems that after a couple of minets of working fine the volume of the right channel will suddenly reduce for no aparant reason. I have tested my amplifier/speakers/cables and have therefore come to the conclution that the issue is with tha macbook its self. Unpluging the cable from the headphone socket and then pluging it in again seems to resolve the issue for a couple of minets before the right channel once again loses volume...........
    Any ideas?
so far i have tried playing around with the sound settings but they are so few and far between that i can see no resolution other than to return the macbook to apple to be fixed.
    Thanks alot

If you're absolutely certain your cables, wires, speakers and everything else is 100% then yes, return it. You might try blowing a little into the headphone jack in the event you collected a bit of debris that is causing the problem.

  • Audio only through right channel

I get audio mainly through the right channel and in order to get it through the left channel I have to lift the jack. It's been this way since I bought it. I don't know what to do to fix it.

  • ITunes only outputting left channel through Soundsticks

I've been using the original Harman Kardon Soundsticks (USB type) for about six years now without problems, but just today they've started behaving oddly in iTunes and Front Row. Only the left channel is now output, through BOTH speakers. They work normally when I use the Quicktime player, but not iTunes/FR. If I switch the output to internal speakers, then iTunes outputs both channels normally. I tried deleting the preferences, and updating iTunes to 8.01 from 8.0 but without any difference. Have also tried rebooting, disconnecting and reconnecting the speakers, and the power to the speakers but nothing seems to make any difference. Additionally, there's no "balance" option in System Preferences for USB speakers.
There clearly isn't anything physically wrong with the speakers themselves so can only assume there must be a corrupted preference file or similar, but have no idea where to start looking. Can anybody help?

I have the exact same problem but I use Windows vista into a MOTU Ultralite Firewire interface outputting to some powered monitor speakers. I know the issue has got to be with iTunes because i can open the mp3 in windows media palyer and it plays just fine in proper stereo. It's really annoying and I cant seem to find the solution.

  • Sound messed up right channel only not the headphones

Anybody else have this problem: When headphones are plugged all the way into the jack only the right channel works. Pull the headphones slightly out of the jack and the left channel works. Both channels sound a little faded. Tried other headphones and same problem.

yea i have the same case, i was thinking that might have been a problem. yea i have to send mine back again the second time for the same problem. I think if Ipod just made them right in the fist place mabey they could save some money on all the returns. good luck with your ipod. and remember if you send it back more than 3 times apple sometimes gives you some free loot.

  • Input on right channel only??

New to Mac, Mainstage, but not new to recording.  I just don't know a ton about how to use this stuff.
I've got my acoustic plugged into a basic M-Audio USB interface.  Interface into the USB port on my Mac Book Air.  MainStage is set to use the Interface as Input/Output.  I play, I hear it in my speakers, it's all gravy.  EXCEPT... In stereo, only the right channel shows any input!  The reverbs come out stereo, which sound very nice, but it's as if the guitar itself is somehow panned to the right.  I don't get it.
If I record it and play it back, it sounds exactly the same.  Main signal comes out of the right speaker, but all the reverbs/delays come out stereo.  It's a trip.
If I set the thing to "Mono" then I get nothing at all.
    Anyone?
Thanks for dropping any help you can give.

Oh, I didn't just blow out the speaker. I would know, because I was using headphones at the time. I also made sure right away to test with other devices being played through the analog stereo 1/8" input. All play through JUST the left side, regardless of output device.
However, sounds/noises/music/etc. generated by the computer itself (iTunes, movies, alert sounds, and such) are all stereo.

  • Audio input issue - No stereo... Right channel only.

    Hi
First to thank you for taking the time to read and consider this if you do - any help in this would be hugely appreciated
Ok - I'll try to make this as concise as poss but it needs some explanation:
I'm home-recording hobbyist musician. One of the things I would very much like to use the iMac for is to back up old four-track tape recordings, recording them as wav or mp3 as the case maybe and saving them to my hdd. Easy right? Apparently not, so far... let me explain:
On the tape recorder there is only an RCA stereo out (red and white, left and right). The very first thing I did when I got the iMac was download Audacity (the audio software), hooked up a stereo lead to the RCA outs on the tape recorder, and ran it into the line-in port on the iMac, using the 1/8" jack.
Now, sound came in, but only the right channel. The left channel was completely dead (ie when I panned the audio to the left, or if there was a sound in the mix that was only in the left channel, it was absent).
Since then I've bought Logic Pro and and an audio interface and this presents the EXACT same problem... Nothing in the left channel. (please note, I am aware you can "fake" stereo by setting a channel-strip to "mono" so that there is sound on both sides, but get this - it only splits the right channel in two - so you still don't have the left channel or genuine stereo signal frustratingly)
It should be noted that stereo sound is not a general problem on the system. Stereo output is perfect (ie on itunes, cds, online etc - or if I'm using softsynths in Logic for instance) it is solely an AUDIO INPUT issue.
Needless to say I've explored all options in sys prefs to no avail.
It should also be noted that I have also tested the actual output of the tape recorder and used the same leads to line into a home stereo system no problems.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about or how this could be resolved? I am even open to suggestions for peripheral equipment, sofware additions etc - any questions at all, just ask.
Thanks again, any input would be welcome.
EDIT: I also posted this in the general iMac forum. Posting here for people w specific audio knowledge thanks!

    Pancenter, thanks once again.
Sorry about delay replying - have had an internet outage here just to add to my woes haha.
Anyway, the good news is that I think I've cracked it:
After updating the OS per your suggestion, uninstalling both Audacity and the m-audio (profire 610), and lastly resetting defaults on sys audio midi prefs I was still experiencing this problem - just on a line-in to Garageband. Pure frustration.
So eventually I just elected (in lieu of chucking the hardware out the nearest window lol) to do a cold re-install of the OS (erase and install option, backup hdd done). As I bought the iMac in January the OS is 10.5.5 I think.
After install, before doing anything else at all, I opened Garageband, set up an audio track and set input prefs to Line in Stereo 1/2 etc, and hooked up the tape unit via rca and the line-in port. The result? Perfect 2-channel stereo.
My personal theory is that the problem was created by the audio interface installation - an m-audio "profire 610" - Tho Audio interfaces are a frickin minefield anyway between Macs and PCS, chipset compatabilities, dodgy beta drivers, worthless gadget-hawking etc etc... I also realised that while my first original attempt was on Audacity I had already installed the profire unit just immediately before (but didn't use it). I doubt it was Logic which is designed specifically for the mac - I feel this theory might be proven when I reinstall these.
So there you go - get the Audio interface right it seems.. And I've got stereo audio.
Thanks for your help and input Pancenter - much obliged.
    Peace.
