My ipod only works when plugged in.

I always keep my ipod plugged into my doc and it plays fine on there and when it comes off the battery life is great. But when its off the doc the click wheel wont work and it goes idle. I tried plugging it into the wall and the pad works fine. It will oddly enough work when it has a cord plugged into the ipod but also unplugged from the all, like it has to have something in the bottom weather it's charging or no. Why wont the buttons work when something isnt plugged into the bottom of it? It's a 4th generation nano, 8g if that helps.

You can work through the remaining five 5 R's of troubleshooting.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's clickwheel, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damaged part for a little less.  Google "iPod clickwheel repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

Anyone know why my iPOD only works when plugged into a wall outlet? I tried it on the Bose docking station and also my MacBook and it won't work!
    Any ideas??

Sounds like a dead battery.  You can have Apple swap out the battery for a flat fee or you can send it to a third party service center to have them do the same for job a little less.

  • How to recover music? iPod only works when plugged into wall outlet

My iPod is probably 5 years old or so. It's been acting up for a while and I stupidly, did not back it up.
The battery was replaced this weekend so it works when plugged into the wall. It will not power on or do anything when not plugged into the wall. When plugged into the wall charger, it can turn on and says it is charging. It can be used then but as soon as it is unplugged, it's dead.
When it is plugged into the computer, it says "Charging. Please wait...". There isn't enough power from my laptop to power the iPod, so my computer doesn't even recognize it. It does not show up in iTunes.
On the brightside, I have a new iPod classic waiting to be used. However, I would VERY much like to get my 90gb+ off of my old iPod first. Is there a way to do this?
I'm at a loss. Some of the files are on there are not anywhere else. I have a few songs by a friend who lost them on their own computer.
Any help would be very appreciated!

Bump. Is there no way to solve this?

  • My Ipod touch will only work when plugged into a itouch radio.  When I take it out, it goes blank.  Why can I do?

My Ipod touch will only work when plugged into an Itouch radio.  When I take it out of the charger, it goes blank.  The battery shows fully charged.  It appears that the battery is no longer charging.  What should I do?

Try a reset: Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost. If that fails, the battery may have gone kaput.

  • 7th gen Nano only works when plugged in, turns off when  unplugged... battery is fully charged.

7th gen Nano only works when plugged into computer, as soon as I unplug it shuts off (it was ejected from iTunes). Battery is fully charged.  Have already done a restore in iTunes and checked for updated software.

    Hello there, DizDude.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good recommendations for troubleshooting battery issues with the 7th generation iPod Nano:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
    Particularly this section:
    Battery life appears short
Learn how to conserve battery life.
Ensure that the latest software is installed on the iPod.
When charging, use the cable that came with iPod nano (7th generation) and leave the device connected until it is fully charged.
Note: If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod nano (7th generation) to your keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod nano (7th generation) is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod nano (7th generation) battery may drain.
When you are done using the iPod nano, verify that:
The Radio application is off (tap the button)
Music is paused (tap the button in the iPod application or disconnect the earphones)
There is no active Pedometer session (tap the Stop button in the Fitness application)
Dimming the screen is another way to extend battery life on iPod nano. Go to Settings > General > Brightness and restore the brightness to the default, or drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.
Playing tracks with EQ requires your iPod processor to consume more energy than playing tracks without EQ, because the EQ information is not encoded in the song. To prolong battery life, turn EQ off if you don't use it. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and select Off from the list. Note, however, that if you've added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you'll need to set EQ to Flat to have the effect of Off, because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.
Try restoring iPod nano (7th generation) by connecting it to iTunes and clicking Restore.
    Test the battery life.

  • Is there anyway to have an 11 inch mac air connected to an external monitor with lid closed and still be able to see content. I have a wireless ketboard and mouse and have tried everything. Only works when plugged in.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
BTW when posting when you use generalities such as "have tried everything" this tells us nothing. When posting please be specific and try to paint a complete picture. It just makes things easier for those trying to help you.

  • Only works when plugged in

My iPad 2 was left on overnight, not plugged in with the battery at 95% last I checked. This morning it was off and I was unable to turn it on. I plugged it into the charger and it seemed to start up, but the date and time had been reset to December 31st 1969 at 4pm!!! Then, I tried to reset the date and time but it would automatically keep going back to that date. When I went to unplug it, so I could sync it with iTunes, it turned off immediately! It only works when plugged into the charger and even then it turned itself off after about 2 minutes. While unplugged, I tried a hard reset (holding the home and sleep/wake button down at same time for 15 seconds, but it doesn't do anything at all. I did notice that it was pretty hot yesterday, but didn't have any problems running it at all. Any suggestions, or is this clearly a hardware problem? Thanks in advance.

When it was plugged in, it was at 95% so that's not the issue. THe battery appears charged, but the device simply doesn't want to run on it. The weird date reset makes me think it could potentially be a software issue, but I'm worried it is essentially a hardware/battery problem.

  • Classic iPod not charging; only works when plugged in

My iPod Classic would work only when plugged in my computer or to the wall. I noticed that when I plug it, the battery automatically turns green and the fully-charged symbol appear. However, when I unplug it, it doesn't work. Any ideas on what I can do? It's no longer under gaurantee so anything that I can do at home would be helpful. Thank you xx

Seems very unlikely you need a new Macbook since it works when "plugged in"; at worst you will have to spring for a new battery.
Try running this program - it will give you info about the state of the battery:

  • IPod only works while plugged into computer!

Help! My 2Gb iPod nano went through the washing machine, and after a few days of drying out, it only works while plugged into the computer. As soon as I take it out, the screen goes blank. I can access all my music, podcasts and photos while it's plugged in. I have tried the 5 Rs to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?

I also sent my nano through the wash and I found that if you get an ac adapter and plug it in for a few hours you will have battery life. This made me very happy however I have noticed that I can not turn the ipod off unless the hold button is on. Battery life is also not as long but long enough for me. Hope this helps

  • My iPod only works when its plugged in, as soon as I take it off charge it turns off. Is this unfixable?

Ive looked up ways to reset th ipod and nothing has worked, for it only turns on when plugged in and wont turn on when it isnt.

Sounds like the battery needs to be replaced. Apple can do it or other authorized service centers as well.

  • Mouse only works when plugged into a specific USB port

Hello. I'm using a HP optical mouse that connects via USB plugin.
    HP PIN: 505062-001 Rev.A
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
It only has full functionality when plugged into a specific USB port on my desktop. I can't get it to work with any other ports or chained with a HUB plugged into the port it likes. All of my other USB devices work fine with those ports and my HUBs. The red light on the bottom lights up but the mouse pointer does not respond to movement and clicking the buttons does nothing either.
    1) I'm confident, that it's not a problem with the desktop hardware
    2) I'm confident, that it's not a problem with the mouse hardware
When the mouse is fully functional, it's displayed under Devices and Printers, in the Devices category as "USB OPTICAL MOUSE".
When connected with the other ports or through a HUB, it appears as TWO entries in the Devices category:  "HID-compliant mouse" and - here's the suspicious part - "HID-compliant keyboard"
I suspect that something's up with the driver for the mouse. Any clues, as to which driver I need? Or, is the cause of the problem something else entirely?

    Hello Tick_Noby,
Your mouse only works in certain usb ports.
Has the mouse ever worked in the ports?
You can go to device manager and uninstall the fake keyboard and the mouse and restart the computer.
It seems that the driver is not correct for the mouse.
    Also reset BIOS defaults.
    Turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
If it has not been to long since the problem started, you can run a system restore.
This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.
Here is a link on how to do a restore.
Let me know how everything goes
    Have a good day.
