My ipod refuses to update.

I just attempted to update my 30gig ipod video and it will not update. When I tried to update it all of the music got wiped off of it but the pictures stayed. My third generation ipod updates just fine though. I already formatted my ipod aswell as re-installing the new itunes. I even tried moving the files manually into the folders on the ipod itself.

Did you try restoring the iPod into the desired firmware ??? Before doing that, I suggest reseting the iPod ( Sleep/Wake + Home until Apple Logo appears ).
Hope this helps,
Darie.

  • 3rd Gen iPod refusing to update

Ok, here's whats happened, any help would be most appreciated.
I have a 3Rd Gen Ipod, and after updating to iTunes 7, it got completely wiped of nearly 4000 songs. I tried to update it several times with iTunes and it basically refused to do anything, and kept freezing my computer, and coming up with the message "The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive I: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." Very frustrating
I have since restored it many times and retried updating, again no joy. I then formatted it via windows (twice now) on the advice from the nice lady on the Apple Tech Support line. And have even changed the drive letter from I to J.
Now at least it will let me add music to it, but it won't let me put any more than 1.22Gb onto it. If i try and put just one more song on it freezes and either comes up with "unknown error occured (-53) " or unknown error occured (-124)
Also i have tried various USB connections etc, but none of it has made a difference.
I'm a bit loathed to give Apple £170 for a service when i could just buy a new iPod for not much more. So does anyone have some advice re the above problem?

    bump....
sorry does anyone have any ideas?

  • Ipod refuses to "update"

i've downloaded the newest update from the web site for my ipod+video, but when i try to run the update program from itunes, i receive the message, "The ipod, "Ashle's ipod" couldn't be updated. The required file cannot be found."
Where can I get the required file/what is going on?
    Thanks,
    A

First try resetting your iPod, here are the steps:
1.Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2.Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
    Or reinstall the updater

  • Database corrupt + ipod refuses to update

windows said the ipod database was corrupt, and when i tried to add new songs, it didn't work. to try to solve this problem, i have downloaded a new ipod updater. ipod updater doesn't finish. after 30 minuts, it still says it needs to stay connected to finish updating.
normally when you go to the Ipod_Control folder, you see these folders:
    Device
    Music
after removing the ipod after 30 minuts, resetting it and putting it back on the USB cable, it only displays the Device folder, and not the Music folder.
i have tried this on 2 computers, installed the latest ipod updater, reinstalled itunes, tried resetting both computers, and nothing works. anyone got an idea? currentley putting back the backup i've made (hope that works, i wan't my ipod tomorrow during my work, otherwise i will be very bored for 6 hours).

When it doesn't update, the best thing to do is:
    1) Mount as an external USB drive (disk mode) and format just as you would any other HD
    2) Now run iPod Updater (standalone, NOT from iTunes)
It might also be a good idea to reload iTunes depending on the version of the updater (they both should be recent). I've had good luck with Updater 1.4 and iTunes 6.0.something.

  • Fifth Generation iPod won't update music

My new fifth generation 30gb iPod refuses to be updated. It worked fine until I transfered a few photos onto it and now unless I have the "synchronise photos from" check box checked, I no longer have the option to update. When I have the box checked it only updates for photos. I have restored it once so far with the same problem returning as soon as I transfer photos. Any clues on how to sort this would be appreciated.

My 30GB ipod wont update music videos. I bought a
couple of music videos from the itunes store and
after they downloaded I connected my ipod to my emac
and a error message popped up and said that the
videos werent the right format. What is the right
format and how do I go about changing it??? What do I
    do?
Does the message say that the files cannot be updated to the iPod because they cannot be played on the iPod?
Go into the "music" tab on the iPod settings, make sure the option that says "include music videos" is checked (if you had to check it, click "apply")
You could try selecting the file in iTunes, and then clicking File > Get Info. See if all the Summary tab information is missing. If it is, something might have happened during the download. You might want to go into your purchase history and report a problem with it. In most cases, iTunes will let you redownload the file.
The problem is, everything downloaded from the iTunes Store is a protected file, so I don't think anything is going to let you convert it. Protected files usually can't be converted...

  • IPad 1 cannot upgrade to io6, but apps want me to upgrade to make them compatible with 6 - should I refuse the updates?

iPad 1 cannot upgrade to io6, but apps want me to upgrade to make them compatible and streamlinedwith 6 - should I refuse the updates?  They don't say if they'll still run in an ios5 platform and I can't afford a new iPad if these upgrades make the iPad apps unusable on this machine. Thanks for any assistance!

Having the same issue here. I unfortunately purchased a book on iTunes, then went to download iBooks, but can't due to their recent update/upgrade.  My kids iTouchs are all 6.1.5 , So I'm guessing that if you did not have iBooks previously purchased that you are now S.O.L. if you want to read a book on your iPod??
I am rather frustrated that I spent money on a book that they can't read.
Is there another app that will let them read it?

  • IPod Won't Update - Is iTunes 7 to blame?

I started having problems with my iPod's playback - skipping songs in a playlist and skipping to the next track before the end of the song - I then tried to add songs (and update calenders etc.) using iTunes 7 (having only just downloaded it) and then everything stopped working.
The iPod registered on the computer and in iTunes - the contents of the iPod appeared in ITunes too, but it refused to accept new songs - when I tried to add songs, iTunes said it was updating, but it froze on the second song and iTunes then crashed.
I have restored the iPod and reinstalled iTunes 7, but neither of them work - the iPod won't update and iTunes constantly crashes (particularly when playing and pausing songs). I tried downgrading to iTunes 6.0.5 - which works fine - but the iPod still would not update.
Are these problems due to iTunes 7 being rubbish or do I have a broken iPod?? Is there anything I can try??
I have also just realised my mistake in putting this question in the Fifth Generation iPod forum, as I don't have one. Apologies for that - I have an iPod with click wheel but I don't seem to be able to move the question!

    hi Jim!
Plug in my iPOD, and it says its updating, and I can see the new music on the iPOD from iTunes, but its NOT ON MY IPOD when I unplug and try and play.
sounds like a drive letter confusion on your PC. see:

  • IPOD doesn't update and apparently can't be restored

I'm having lots of problems with my iPOD and iTunes. First, when I connected my ipod to update it got completely erased and I couldn't eject it. I had to follow the window's protocol to eject usb devices and it froze my laptop for hours. And ever since every time I connect my ipod I have trouble. The ipod never gets updated, the ipod never mirrors its itunes library. It actually sort of refuses to update calling unkonwn error (-36), but I also couldn't find an article about this specific article. And the "do not disconnect" message never disappears. I've re-installed iTunes lots of times but it never worked. Also I can't restore the ipod because when FINALLY iTunes recognizes the ipod it doesn't show the summary on the source list, so I can't do that either. Also the ipod updater does't work.
    HELP!

    Hi babacita,
Your iPod is most likely not defective.
Is your computer now or has it ever been connected to a home or office network of some kind? If so (and even if not it is worth a shot) the steps in the following knowledgebase article should resolve the issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
Basically it just has you using Windows Disk Management to change the drive letter of a mapped network drive (or if that is not an option, the ipod).
Try it and let us know if it helps.
    Good luck

  • IPOD cannot be update - 40 GB Click Wheel

Upgraded Itunes & Ipod to latest software versions and can't synch up ipod with Itunes. Have followed ALL steps to recify...uninstall, empty temp directory, standalone Quicktime, reinstall latest. Install goes fine but when I connect Ipod it begins to update from itunes but after about 9G or 2500 songs it says complete (I have over 7500 songs). When I go to update again I get the error message "The iPOD cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." Please help!

Well it was worth a try...after restoring iPOD, set it up and started auto download from iTunes...once again, everything seemed to be going fine...got up to 2615 songs and it started slowing down while updating ipod and ipod statred making little noises..at 2636 songs it said ipod update complete..my ipod still said do not disconnect so I ejected and still said same thing..no songs updated although it said they had.....reconnected and only 5 songs shoed...clicked on update again and got the message "windows delayed write failed..windows was unable to save all the data for the file G: the data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. please try to save the file elsewhere....the other message that i have been getting is "This ipod Neil's Ipod cannot be updated. • ERROR MESSAGE: The IPOD cannot be updated.

Please help!! Have tried everything can think of including, resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling and restoring. ITunes automatically starts downloading when you connect but then only transfers the first 50 or so songs in the library, and then says update complete. When you ask it to then update the IPOD through file menu an error message comes up saying 'The IPOD cannot be updated, the disk could not be read from or written to.' There is no problem with the IPOD, because I have been able to update it via another PC, it just won't update via the laptop even though the ITunes has been set up on the laptop as the ITunes I want to use.

In the iTunes window, when I update my nano ipod, I get an error message "User ipod cannot be updated.  The disk could not be read from or written to."   How can I overcome this error message.

    Hello there dilip77707,
It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:
'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
