1. STOP SCREAMING!
2. Follow the 5 Rs, in the order listed:
1. Reset your iPod.
2. Retry with a different USB port.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.

You can try putting it into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If that works, you can see if the computer will recognize it when connected, either in iTunes or by the system.
NOTE:  You can also try putting it into Disk Mode WHILE it is already connected to the computer.
If the iPod is recognized, you may be able to use one of the third-party methods or utilities to transfer song files from iPod to computer.  You can do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer" to get some links (add "mac" to the search if your computer is a Mac).
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library, then sync it to the new iPod.

  • Question about Folder with an exclamation Point

    Please Help.
I have an Ipod Mini. I think when i was trying to update my media library, i may have erased the software on it? Now when i turn it on, there is a folder with an exclamation point on it, and won't load. I installed the latest IPOD software, and it only has the RESTORE option available for choosing, not the software update. It says i need a software update, but the button is not available to update. Can someone please help me out? If the description is unclear.. i took a screen shot that I can send out. Thanks

  • TS1424 When I click to play my songs in the library they will not play and show a circle with an exclamation point in the middle of it, what does that mean and how can I get them to play?

When I click to pay my songs in the library they will not play and it shows a circle with an exclamation point within it. What does that mean, how do I fix it, and how will it play my songs again? They used to play before on my Iphone4 with no problem, but since I upgraded to the Iphone4s there is an issue.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

  • My ipod has the folder with the exlimation point on it and isnt updating

I downloaded the updater but nothing happens when i plug my ipod in. It asks plug in ipod to update i do and it doesnt reconize it. Does this mean i have to send it in or is there another problem?

Besides downloading the updater, you must install it then run it.
After you do this, run the updater and when it asks you to connect an iPod, connect to one of the ports on the rear of your computer. Then reset the iPod while it's connected: hold down the Menu and Select (center) buttons until you see the Apple logo. This will often get it recognized.

  • IPod stuck on folder with exclamation point

My iPod suddenly stopped working and started showing me the apple logo and the folder with the exclamation point over and over again.
I have uninstalled all software, reinstalled, followed everything in the trouble-shooting section on this site. I have tried to manually reset it, but it doesn't recognize that. Windows recognizes the iPod, but neither the updater or iTunes do. I tried to restore it, but it just freezes every time.
    Please help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Looks as though there is a problem with your iPod. Better have someone, say at an Apple Store, to check it out.

  • NEWBIE- Doesn't turn on, just shows a folder with ...

Okay, I just got my Ipod as a gift and it doesn't seem to work! It's been charging for quite a while already and when I looked on the Ipod site, it says that Nano's take only about 3 hours !? But mines is taking FOREVER. It's plugged into the computer right now and the screen is flashing "do no disconnect" and in the top right corner, there's an icon of a battery thing and it has that lightning bolt to the left of it ... So I'm assuming it's still charging? I'm not sure. And it doesn't even want to turn on. I tried Resetting it and everything, by holding the menu and middle button for six seconds, but the only thing that appears is the Apple logo and then there's a folder with an exclamation point. Then after that, it goes straight back to "Do not disconnect" .. but it doesn't show me anything else, like songs. When I look in Itunes and i double click on my Ipod, it has a list of songs that i uploaded onto my nano. But the songs are non-clickable ... IDK what i'm doing, and it's really frustrating. If anyone knows anything about this, Could you please help me?

please do a search on"do not disconnect" - this question has been asked and answered 100 times.... the search box really does work

  • IPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point after discon

Since I always ignore instruction booklets with new devices, I failed to notice the warnings with regard to configuring my iPod mini on a Windows PC. I did not install the included software first and I tried to sync with iTunes (my girlfriend already has an iPod mini so iTunes was already installed). As a result I ended up with folder exclamation point icon.
    I tried the folowing already:
    1) Reformatting the disk through windows explorer
    2) Reset:
The folder icon with exclamtion point appears after reset
    3) Running Updater 2004-04-28:
After plugging in the iPod at the prompt, the message "iPod updater can;t install firmware on connected iPod. The iPods hardware and the updater firmware are not compatible." I got the same message when doing the same thing in 'disk mode'.
    4) Running the software on the disc that came with it:
When prompted I connected the iPod to the PC. I get a message "Your iPod has been connected. Please wait while the system recognises the device". And then nothing happens.
Please can anyone advise me how to fix this problem?

Ok guys!! I did it!! I fixed my iPod! I want to thanks Apple for the great help they gave me (I'm being sarcastic)!
I remember that I downloaded iTunes 4.9 and the iPod updater from 2 two weeks ago on my neighbor's computer.
As this problem (IPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point when I turn it on) only happened since I upgraded iTunes to 5.0 version and iPod updater, and after one and a half day calling Apple, reading the entire web site looking for an answer, discussing with a lot of people about this problem and nothing happened, I wanted to give the last try and went to may neighbor's computer!!
I turned on the iPod updater.
When it said i had to connect my iPod I did it
    Then I pressed RESTORE
After that I plug it in the A/C adapter
    It worked
I connected the iPod to the computer again
iTunes worked and my iPod is working as a new one!!

  • IPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point

IPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point when I turn it on, and says: "www.apple.com/support/ipod"
I can't restore the I Pod or reset it as they first told on the support web site, because it only appears that message...
I installed the latest version of the iPod updater and it didn't work also.
When I go to the iPod updater it gives me the "iPod service error" message.
    What must I do!
    I'm on a Windows XP.
    Help me please!!

If it is otherwise working, you can change the battery.  If you want to do it yourself, you can buy the part on eBay and other online sources.  Just make sure you know the type of iPod you have so that you get the right part.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353
There are online guides, including the ones on this web site
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod
(Note:  Most replacement batteries come with plastic/nylon tools seen in the guides.)
You can also have a repair business do the work.
If it is just the battery, if you do a Reset (using the Menu and Select buttons) while it is connect to your computer, I think it should still be recognized by iTunes.

  • Can we solve this problem -folder with the exclamation icon

What is this folder with the exclamation icon?
Why it happens only to the iPod connected to PC?
Why it is the toughest problem to be solved?
    What causes it?
Just would like to share my experience with all of you, my niece has a mini iPod that connects with a PC, however, after ejecting the iPod a few times inproperly, her iPod showed this most notorious evil icon. I followed all the instructions from the Apple web site in this forum, I did nearly ten times of Resets and Restores (I managed to restore but not everytimes), still failed to get rid of this icon, and it jsut would not disappear in the iPod. I just got very frustrated and I asked myself should I connect it with a Mac? Why not? So I connected it with my Mac, no surprise, then I put it in Disk Mode and reconnectted (few attempts), the iPod icon appeared on my Desktop but I still could not do the restore.
As I believed that iPod was the same as an external Hard Disk, and it was broken anyway, why not have another try - so I opened the Disk Utility and saw the iPod there, then I did an Erase (format) the iPod, once completed I reconnected with my Mac again, after 4 attempts, the iPod updater window popup and asked me whether I would like to do a restore, I finally managed to get rid of this icon. I connectted it with PC and was able to do a restore in my PC and got recongzied afterward. It has happened almost for 6 months and I heard that this iPod is still working fine.
My suggestion is - unless you need to do the update of song with your iPod, never and ever charged your iPod via connecting with the PC, I leave my iPod with the Bose docking system and it has no problem at all.

I always use the iPod AC charger to charge my iPods and I have never had any problems.
The initial cause of the problems in your post is probably that several improper ejection of the iPod. If you do not have a Mac the problem may not be solvable by yourself.

  • Old ipod displays a "folder" with a !

I've inherited an old 4gb ipod from my daughter (actually she just left it when she set off round the world..) I've connected it to the Mac and it showed what looked like a battery with a flash across it then went to a picture of a folder with an exclamation mark and the URL of the ipod support forum.
Resetting it gets me the Apple logo but then that goes and I get the folder picture back again.
It's not showing up in iTunes or in the Music Rescue application.
I'm wondering if the reason my daughter didn't take it is because it's broken! Battery gone perhaps?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

MY ipod turns on to the screen with the apple and then makes some clicking noises and goes to a screen with a folder and an exclaimation point and then turns off!!! HELP?! How do I get my ipod to turn on!?!? I have tried restarting it already...

  • Folder icon with an exclamation point

My ipod told me I had a corrupt disk so I restored it. I then tried to sync it with my itunes library but after a while it said "The iPod (my name) cannot be synced. The required file (or disk) cannot be found." And then it says the sync is finished. When I look at my iPod, only a few of my songs appear as opposed to the number that it got to when syncing. I then tried restoring it again but the computer now freezes and doesn't find the ipod and only unfreezes when the ipod is unplugged. Occasionally itunes comes up with a message about my ipod being corrupt and needs to be restored even when the ipod isn't plugged in. Now the folder icon with an exclamation point has come up on my screen, and it will not connect to the computer at all. I have tried putting it into disk mode but it still doesn't work. does this mean that I have no hope and I will have to buy a new one??

I have tried all of those. when i even tried to
restore factory settings, it said ipod manager
internal error. what is that? and one other thing i
noticed, the lock symbol that appears when you slide
the hold button appers at the bottom of the computer
screen when my ipod is attached, I guess suggesting
that it is locked, but when i toggle it on the ipod
itself it appears and disappers as indicated. this
    is driving me nuts!
iPod Manager Internal Error deals with the software versions you have on your computer. One of them might be out of date. Make sure you have iTunes 6.0.4 (open iTunes, click on Help, click on About iTunes. The version is the top line of the gray text that scrolls up). Then make sure you have iPod Updater 2006-03-23.
If you need to update iTunes you can get it at
    www.apple.com/itunes/download
If you need to update iPod Updater you can get it at
    www.apple.com/ipod/download
If you find that your software is all up to date, try just restarting your computer, and then restoring again. (If you have your iPod in disk mode, you should disconnect it before you restart your computer).
If that doesn't work, just uninstall and reinstall iTunes. This should resolve the iPod Manager Internal Error.
As far as the lock icon goes... I'm not sure about that one. It might have something to do with having the iPod in disk mode, or it might just be acting weird because of what's going on with the iPod right now. As long as it isn't blocking you from trying the steps to fix the iPod, I wouldn't worry too much about it for now. Maybe it'll act normally once you resolve the !folder.
    Best wishes,
    CG
