My iPod Shuffle 4th Generation refuses to sync up the PC plays count

As soon as a new podcast episode arrives in my Podcasts iTunes library, it shows up in that library with a plays count = 0.   When I start up iTunes and update the podcasts, I then copy all new (unplayed) podcasts to a Playlist named "1-UnheardPodcasts", then mark all unplayed podcasts in that playlist as Played, thereby setting the play count on those podcast episodes to 1.   I then copy a bunch of podcasts to my iPod shuffle 4th gen and wander off cackling into the night to listen to those podcasts.  In the fullness of time, I return to my PC, fire up iTunes, plug in my shuffle and see that the shuffle shows the plays count (on the episodes I have listened to) as 2.   I then sync the iPod to iTunes but the plays count in my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and in the podcasts library both stubbornly remain set to 1.   I then have to manually pretend to listen to the podcasts in iTunes again, fast forward to the end of each podcast, let it finish, then the plays counts everywhere are set to 2.  I can then delete the plays count 2 episodes from my "1-UnheardPodcasts" playlist and all is right with the world and I'm ready for new episodes to randomly appear in my podcasts library.
My older first generation shuffles (both of which died and were replaced by the 4th gen shuffle recently) did not have this problem.  Sync from those would always update the plays count on the iTunes application on my PC to match what it showed for the plays count on the shuffle.
What's up with that?  Is there any way to fix this?  It happens whether or not I completely fill up the shuffle.
I also have problems with getting back to where I left off if I stop playing a podcast by pressing the centre button on the iPod face and then try to resume play a few minutes later.  If I shut down the shuffle and restart it, it seems to always resume play from where it left off.
I've got everything turned on in the iPod settings menu except the thing about reserving disk space for Windows files.
I've got what claims to be the latest version (11.0.4) of iTunes running under Windows 7 (64 bit) on a BIOSTAR MB with an AMD phenom II X4 820 2.8 GHz quad core processor with 8 GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of free disk space.
When I click on check for updates with the iPod attached on the iPod settings window, it comes back with "you have the latest version"

If you are loading the shuffle manually, by dragging podcast episodes to the shuffle in iTunes, that is probably why the playcount does not update in your iTunes library, after playing the podcast episode on the shuffle (and then connecting the shuffle).
When you use the manual method to load the shuffle, the iTunes library on the computer and the library on the shuffle are separate.  iTunes does not keep the two libraries "in sync."  Therefore, data such as playcount are not synced back to the computer when you connect the shuffle.
If you set up automatic syncing using the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes, iTunes keeps your iTunes library in sync with the shuffle's library (based on how you set up the shuffle's Podcasts screen).  So data, such as playcount, should sync back to the iTunes library.  In your case, if you maintain a playlist in iTunes with the unheard podcast episodes you want on the shuffle, you can select that playlist on the shuffle's Podcasts screen in iTunes (where it says Include Episodes from Playlists).  iTunes will automatically keep that playlist in sync between your computer and the shuffle.
NOTE:  If you are currently NOT using automatic syncing, and you also have music on the iPod, you will also need to set up the shuffle's Music screen in iTunes.  When you start using automatic syncing, any content on the shuffle that was loaded manually is replaced.
The 1st and 2nd gen shuffles used a different very simple software design, compared to other iPods.  They did not have an automatic syncing mode.  You loaded it manually, but it was linked to only one iTunes library at a time.  Therefore, although you loaded it manually, iTunes does keep data (such as playcount) in sync.  On all other iPods, including the newer shuffles, iTunes only keeps the data in sync if you use automatic syncing.

If you did a Restore in iTunes, and it continues to have the problem, if it is covered under warranty or AppleCare, you should probably contact Apple tech support directly (not the users forum).  If you have an Apple Store nearby, a good way to do this is to make a reservation at the store's Genius Bar and take it there.  You don't have to have a reservation, but you can make one at the store's web page

    Hi Daisymae3,
The iPod shuffle does not use Windows Media Player to sync, it uses Apple’s iTunes application, available for free from this web site -

  • IPod shuffle 4th generation will not connect to iTunes.

iPod shuffle 4th generation will not connect to iTunes.  Windows Vista and iTunes, all updates current.  Cables secure & connected.  Device driver will not load.  iPad will connect when tried with several other computers.  When I try to connect it will hang iTunes until I re-boot.  iPad does NOT appear in Windows Explorer either.

Oh, so the iPad DOES work fine connected to the same computer and the same port.  I thought you said it did not in the first post, but maybe you got that working (or I misunderstood before).
NOTE:  When things are working properly, the shuffle will not appear in Windows Explorer (except when actively syncing), unless you have Enable disk use turned on for the shuffle.  So not seeing it in Windows Explorer may not be a problem.
Is this shuffle a new purchase... so it did not previously work for you on this computer?  If so, make sure that the shuffle end of the USB cable is fully inserted into the headphones jack.  The fit can be tighter than expected, and it may seem connected, but is not.  For a surprising number of people, this was the problem.
In iTunes, is the sidebar (along left side of window) visible.  If it is hidden, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  When there are no devices connected, the heading DEVICES should not appear in the sidebar.  When you connect your iPad, DEVICES should appear, with the iPad listed below.  If you connect the shuffle, it is be added to the list under DEVICES.  To confirm, you do not see the shuffle listed there under DEVICES, when it is connected?
When you connect the shuffle, does its light on the shuffle do anything?

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...
This article was one of the ones you linked to above in your initial post
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

  • Can't rate podcasts to order playback on iPod shuffle 4th generation

I have an iPod shuffle 4th generation with VoiceOver and listen to many podcasts. I like to use the rating system (5 stars, 4 stars, etc.) to order the playback.
This has worked well on my iPod shuffle 2nd generation, but the Rating column does not respond when I add podcasts to the Podcast section on my 4th generation iPod shuffle.

    Hello, klmc29,
I would check out this Apple support document on how to delete music from your iPod. It sounds like you are trying to delete music as if you had your iPod shuffle set up to manually sync, but in actuality, your iPod shuffle is set to sync automatically, which requires a different method for deleting music from your iPod.

  • Ipod shuffle 4th generation device not shown on itunes, not charging. Seeing red light when connecting to USB charger for a few seconds, then nothing. How to fix this?

My ipod shuffle 4th generation was working fine for a few months. My son then bit the USB charger. I bought a new USB charger, but the shuffle is not charging and not showing up under the devices in itunes. It also doesn't appear in my windows under my computer. Just to note. I also have a new ipod touch. I am able to charge that fine on the same computer using the USB charger. The device (Ipod touch) does show up in windows and in itunes. The shuffle doesn't show in either place.
I have tried to use the apple support page. I went through each step. I made all of my USB drives not shut down, I had my computer on all night to try and charge the shuffle. All I see is a red light that appears on the shuffle for a few seconds when I first connect the USB charger to the computer. Then, nothing. Since this was working a bit ago, I don't think that I have a defective shuffle. The USB charger is brand new, I just picked it up yesterday from the apple store. I have the short one, and the longer cable as well.
Any help that you might be able to give to me would be much appreciated. My daughter is missing listening to her music. Thanks!

Instead of "charger," you should call it the "USB cable" to avoid confusion.  When started reading your post, I was thinking, how can your son break a USB power adapter (the "charger" that plugs into a wall socket) by biting it...
Since you got the product with the two USB cables at the Apple Store, you have the right replacement (some third-party replacements are for the 2nd gen shuffle and do not work with the 4th gen shuffle).  Make sure you are completely inserting the plug into the headphones jack.  The fit may be tighter than expected, since the connectors are new.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3572
If you tried both of those cables, it would be unlikely that you got two faulty cables in one package.  If a new USB device has been added to the computer between the time it worked with the old cable and now, there could be a problem on the USB bus (such as not enough power or a device conflict).
As a test, you should shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices (including any hub), except for standard keyboard and mouse (if used).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle by itself to a direct USB port on the computer.

  • My ipod shuffle 4th generation cannot be reset

Hi I have an ipod shuffle 4th generation. It was working perfectly fine when suddenly it wouldnt charge and also it is not being detected by pc. I have windows 7 installed on my pc. I thought it would be frozen so I followed the resetting steps on the apple site for a frozen Ipod shuffle 4th gen, but still noting seems to work. Please provide me with a solution asap...

Is this what you tried to Reset the shuffle?
    support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
You do have a "shuffle," correct?  Not a nano?  I ask because a shuffle has no screen, so there is nothing that would appear to be "frozen" and no indicator for it charging (except for a light).

  • IPod Shuffle 4th Generation not charging or turning on - Warranty Replacement?

I have a 2GB iPod Shuffle 4th Generation that I just bought maybe 2 weeks ago at Target. It's been a great little thing to use in the car and just tonight it stopped charging from my computer and wouldn't turn on. I held down buttons, looked up solutions, attempted the reset, reset my computer, used a friend's cable, tried everything. It seems to just be a brick. I know it's under some kind of warranty and I haven't gotten it at all wet or dropped it.
Can I get it replaced at my local Apple Store free of charge? I do not have the receipt for it, and I bought it with a gift card. I don't believe I've yet registered it online.
