My iPod Shuffle is Unresponsive

My iPod shuffle died and is unresponsive. The Apple support online is pretty useless. All searches lead to the same reset procedure, but my shuffle is unresponsive whether I charge it, plug it into my mac or do the normal reset. Also, I don't live anywhere near an Apple store so I can't go there to sort out the issue and from what I've read, it doesn't seem they will be of any help.
I use my shuffle only for exercise and I believe it may be affected by moisture / sweat. I've has my shuffle for exactly 1 year and had no problems until now. I use it at the gym and to go running. I sweat and the shuffle may be exposed to some moisture but only a reasonable amount of exposure compared to what the shuffle is designed for as an exercise accessory. Then at the gym the other day it started jumping, then in and out of responsiveness, then plain dead. I've tried charging since, plugging to my mac, resetting etc and nothing works. No lights, noises or anything. I would love to take it back but 1) I live nowhere near an Apple store; 2) it's a waste of time and money; 3) I believe I would suffer the same fate again.
I would love to receive some info on a practical solution, but I'm my expectations are low. If anyone has been through a similar situation and come out successfully I would love to hear.
Thanks and good luck to you all who have experienced similar problems!

The light blinks orange when I plug it in, itunes shows 0 battery.
Have tried: full itunes reset X2

The iPod was working fine, then after about 45 minutes of use i looked as if battery drained.

  • I bought a 4th generation ipod shuffle and got the newest itunes download.  Whenever I try to go to set it up, it shows me the squares to click but doesnt say what I am clicking on.  I have an older shuffle as well but have no problems with it.

I have an ipod shuffle (about 2-3 years old) and bought the 4th generation shuffle for my daughter.  When I try to set hers up, it takes me to a summary page, and on the left I can see ipod, version, options but the squares that I would click on have nothing next to them.  So I don't know what I am trying to put on the ipod.  Then if I click on music (sync music, playlist, artist), again, I can see the squares but not the words next to them.  Does this have anything to do with the other shuffle or computer sharing?  I am unhappy right now and have to get this fixed in two days.  HELP!!

    Hi,
I have recently updated my iTunes to the latest version in order to sync music onto my new ipod shuffle. However after a successful installation the application does not launch or open? There are no error messages. The application is just unresponsive.
I have already checked the compatibility with Safari, my operating system and checked my firewall is not blocking it - all is fine.
Does anyone have any other resolutions?
    Many thanks

    Hi Carolyn,
Thank you for your time and response. The trouble is I am unable to launch iTunes? I have restarted my macbook air a number of times to try and initiate the application but the issue persists and the application remains unresponsive. Will not launch?

  • IPod Shuffle (2nd gen) and iTunes 8.1.1.10 not synching...

My iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen seems to be unable to sync with iTunes 8.1.1.10 -- in a way. It is recognized in iTunes (shows up in sidebar, correctly labeled; I can view its content) and it will charge and autofill. However, it will not sync with iTunes and communicate playcounts or show me in any way that the autofill is occurring or has occurred.
I have used the "Restore" function and it did not correct the problem. Additionally, when I try to File>Sync iPod, the option is unavailable (not a clickable button/option). I really would like to be able to sync my playcounts again...
    Thank you!

Are you using iTunes for Windows to sync your 1G and 2G iPods? Reading through the forums, I've only seen this issue come up on Windows machines.
As I stated in my message above, the new release 8.2.0.23 has not resolved the issue. I've actually reloaded my computer completely at this point and the issue still exists. I've confirmed that the problem is not the iPod, as I was able to successfully erase and sync using a Windows XP machine and iTunes 7.4 then move music on to the iPod. When I went back to my primary machine, I did an erase and sync, but was unable to move any music on to the iPod. The iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen will show up in iTunes, but if you try to drag songs to the iPod, autofill or apply a change of setting, iTunes will state that it is "Syncing iPod. Do not disconnect." It will stay in this mode for 2-3 minutes and iTunes will be unresponsive during this time. Once iTunes starts responding again, nothing has been copied to the iPod and none of the settings changes have been saved on the iPod.
Please note that my 60GB iPod Video syncs without issue (and no, I'm not trying to sync both at the same time).

  • My ipod Shuffle 4g turns on the button lock as soon i turn on my ipod!

Hello, I turned my Ipod Shuffle 4th gen on as Normal, but as soon I Turned it on, the button lock turns on automatically, and becomes unresponsive, I cant turn it off! I Can only somehow control my ipod with the remote on my headphones... is there a soulution?????

GOD i did pretty much the same think , idropped mine on a chair nd it dented on the lower volume button and at first there was this crack on the screen like a smurf punched the volume button nd left a crater. After i touched the crack a little bit freaking out, the whole screen went white with a small black spot( like the one on yours, but ALOT smaller) after a little while , like 10 min in my pocket, i could see the top of the screen normally(enough to see the time and date while its locked, but the spot is still there nd the rest of the screen is really white. i can make out things easier on the right side, but everything on the left is bright and distorted as if the loer part of the screen was cut in half nd the left side slid down.
But anyways i dont think we can fix this , ive tried pushing out the dent nd now my ipod just has seisures( the screen flashes like a strobe light as it goes from white and distorted to normal nd back)
Might just hav to pay the $99 for apple to replace/repair it

  • What's wrong with my iPod shuffle? any ideas?

I received my iPod shuffle the other day, and have installed the software and started moving songs from my computer to the iPod. When the iPod is in my computer, the songs all show, but when I take it out, the iPod will not play... is this a fault with my iPod? or am I doing something wrong?! the battery light goes green when I press the button, so I don't think it's that.
    Please help with this problem!!
    Thanks!!

Hey guys- I seem to be having much the same problem, only I seem to be unable to fix it.
I have a brand new iPod Shuffle which will happily accept files via iTunes, but when I try to make it play them it is totally unresponsive- almost as though the 'Play/Pause' button isn't working.
I've updated to the latest iPod software (2005.11.17), but still no joy. I've tried updating the software on the iPod itself but I get the following error:
    "Firmware update failure.
    Disk write error."
I'm going crazy trying to work out what the **** is wrong here- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Oh- and one more thing while I'm here:
"... go to www.apple.com/support for instructions on how to obtain warranty service."
Am I being very dumb here- where are these mythical instructions?!

  • IPOD SHUFFLE given as a gift with no software, how do i set it up?

Ive been given a ipod shuffle with no software and have downloaded the updates but it still is unresponsive, can i still use it if i dont have the original disks?
i currently have an ipod mini as well.

First, read through the iPod Shuffle User's Guide and see what it is that you're supposed to be doing. Also take a look at the content at the iPod Shuffle Support Page.
Post back with specific questions based on the above, but do try to provide a workable level of detail. Not sure what I mean by that? Try answering this:

  • IPod Shuffle quite unexpectedly.

I was listening to my iPod Shuffle one day and all on the sudden the music just stops as if the iPod had been turned off, at first I thought maybe I had bumped one of the buttons or something like that but I was preoccupied so I did not get around to turning it back on for a little bit, but when I did it started on a different song, however I did not think much of this thinking I may have hit the skip button by accident, so I went back to what I was doing but it quite again, again I thought maybe a button had been touched some how, so I removed my pocket watch from that pocket (which could not even reach the bottom of my pocket were my iPod Shuffle was, but just in case) and a few other items, I pushed play again, and got back to what I was doing again, and this time when it quite I toke it out of my pocket turned it on again and this time I watched it the whole time not much more then one song later it dies for no apparent reason. The symptoms when you try and restart it are this. When it shuts of it will not restart in tell it seams to want to, which seams to be any where from thirty seconds to thirty minutes or more, when it actually does power up again it will play for a random amount of time, from less then one song to three or more, when it does power down the green light fleshes brightly and then goes dim for a short amount of time flashes bright again and goes out completely, after that every thing is very random, the song it will restart on is random, wether any lights work when you push a button is random and the play button does an odd thing, when you push and hold the play/pause you can here that the iPod has power through the head phones and it sounds almost as if you have it paused or are skipping songs the green light will stay on for a while when you are holding the button but will eventually flash to orange as if it has gone to the hold mode and then all lights go out as the sound continues but if you let up on the play/pause button it acts dead again. I have restored it on my PowerBook, but to no avail, and when I try to restore it on my Power Mac it says it cant because of error 1418. And when I called Apple they just told me because I had bought it in February that the phone service was over and told me my options. If you have any suggestions or answers I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.
    Power Mac G5 & PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Can you tell if it is turning off, or just pausing playback?  After it stops the music unexpectedly, if you press Play/Pause button, does it start playing again, or is it unresponsive (as it the power swtich is in the OFF position)?
If it does not start playing again by pressing Play/Pause, what do you need to do to get it to play again?
Do you use headpbones that have remote control buttons on the cord?
To rule out a problem with your headphone that is causing this problem, try using a difference set (any standard type), to see if the problem recurs.

  • ITunes freezes when syncing podcasts to iPod shuffle

I have the square shuffle and every time I go onto iTunes and try syncing a new podcast to it the whole thing freezes. It does not freeze when I sync music, just when I click on the podcast tab at the top. Pretty weird but I can't seem to fix the problem. Please help, Im tired of listening to music while running!!!!!

  • Ipod shuffle 1GB volume problem?

hello, i have a 1gb ipod shuffle, bought it 3 months back, meaning the 90 day warantee is gone, and now is exactly when its just messed up!!!.
the other day i was using my ipod shuffle and when i tried to put the volume higher, the volume steadily decreased until i couldnt hear anything. i thought that maybe the battery needs a charge so i left it for charge, but ever since its still not working.
its really annoying that something that i bought 3 months ago is already damaged? ive been keeping very good care of it and have also got the apple sock thing. ive tried resetting the ipod, also updating the software but nothing has worked so far.
if anyone could help id be very greatful..
    thanks

    Here's something to try sunny...
In playing around with mine, I have determined that the problem is somehow linked to the battery level indicator button. When music is playing, it seems that pressing the battery button makes the iPod more susceptible to the volume fading to nothing.
It may just be a coincidence, but there's more.
After the volume fades, the iPod is unresponsive. I've found randomly turning it on and off will eventually get it to work again, for a bit. However, while the iPod is frozen and still switched to on, try pressing the battery button. In my short experience that enabled me to use it again... at least until the whole problem happens again.
If this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to explain it better. Or maybe we don't actually have the same issue. Mine's definitely bunk though, but at least I've found how to make it almost usable until it's replaced.
Good luck, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
    EDIT:
Hmmm, it seems pressing either forward or backward will also unfreeze the iPod. Man, I hate these intermittent, weird problems.
Let me know if your shuffle is as crazy as this...

  • Relative longevity of iPod shuffle models: G2, G3, G4

I have a couple of Gen 2 shuffles that I have kept and will loan out to people from time to time.  I also have a Gen 3 shuffle and a Gen 4.  Recently I was hoping to use either the G3 or G4 while I had some dental work done as I could control either of those without disturbing the dentist.
To my surprise the G3 and G4 were (and are still) completely unresponsive.  Their lights do not go on, they are not recognized on the computer, and connected to the proper earphones, there is no sound.  They seem to be completely dead - and that is after more than one attempt to charge them.
I was further surprised to see the G2 shuffles spring back to life after charging.
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed similar performance.  Were the G2 shuffles better made for longer life?  Or since they are a simpler design, does that help them last longer?

Are we positive though that the 3G and 4G Shuffles are dead for sure?  Have you tried leaving them to charge for a couple of hours and then try resetting them using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • Just updated to itunes 10 and now I can't manually get podcasts to play in my music line up on my 3rd generation ipod shuffle

I just updated to Itunes 10 and now when I drag a podcast to play on my 3rd Generation Ipod Shuffle, the podcasts won't play as as part of the music list.  I know you must add the podcasts manually by dragging them and dropping.  I did do that.  I know that you can only use the Ipod in order not random.  So, it must be a problem with the new software?
    Thanks.

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • New 3rd Gen. 4 GB iPod Shuffle not being recognized by computer or iTunes

Hey everyone, I've read some of the other posts here on this thread about other people having problem getting their computer to recognize the new 4 GB iPod Shuffle when plugged into the USB drive, and it seems like I am having a very similar issue. I just received my iPod in the mail a few days ago and tried plugging it into the USB and got NO response whatsoever from my computer or iTunes. I am operating with Windows XP (Service Pack 3) on a Dell Inspiron Intel processor, 2 GHz with 3 GB RAM, with iTunes 8.1 (just updated). When I put something in my USB usually I hear a noise (sounds like DO-do ha) which tells me that my laptop recognizes whatever is plugged in, and usually I get a little box in the bottom right hand part of the screen that says it's been plugged in. I didn't get any of this when I plugged it in.
When I first opened the box I turned the shuffle on and the light went green for 1 second, orange for 1 second, red for one second, then dead..I suppose this is expected since I figured it's new and needs to be charged, so I turned the shuffle off, plugged the USB into the earphone socket then into my USB, and then turned the shuffle on, and got nothing but the same sequence of lights. It's one thing if iTunes just didn't recognize the shuffle, but I checked the Device Manager and My Computer and the USB drive wasn't even listing the shuffle as being plugged in..maybe the USB cable that came with it is faulty?? I read all of the technical troubleshooting notes on here and tried the 5 R's and nothing is working at all..
I do have one guess about this though..I also have an 80 GB iPod 5th generation that I've used for over a year now for my car and that plugs into the USB fine with its respective cable and is recognized by iTunes..my question is, can my iTunes only recognize one iPod at a time? Does it reject the shuffle because iTunes is only allowed to sync to one iPod per account? If this is true, is there a way around this so it can sync both, or can I have two iTunes accounts on the same computer? But why does the computer not even recognized it when plugged in? Hopefully it is just the cable that is damaged and not the device..wow this was long, but any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes v7.0 - What Now?

    Hello everyone,
I am having the same problem as many who have posted here. I have upgraded my software to iTunes v7.0.1.8. I also accepted the auto update for my iPod Shuffle - 512GB 1st Gen to v 1.44 (I believe). Of course, now my Shuffle is not recognized in iTunes and is only recognized in Windows for less than 5 seconds (as I have monitored it). I am listing below all of the actions I have taken today.
As none of these have worked, my question is now what? Does anyone have any other suggestions before I take the dreaded step of calling support? Any help is appreciated.
I am not happy with this upgrade issue at all. I expect much better from Apple.
    Steps Already Taken:
    1. Reset iPod.
    2. Set Terminal Services to "Manual" and restarted my laptop PC.
    3. Changed all USB Root Hub entries power management options to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option" and rebooted.
    4. Assigned my external hard drive a different letter as it was assigned to "E" and tech support documentation suggested I changed it - I changed it to "M".
    5. I stopped the iPod Service via the Services and Application interface from My Computer/Manage, reattached the Shuffle, and started the iPod Service. The Shuffle was still not recognized.
    6. I uninstalled iTunes 7.0.1.8, the Apple Software update and QuickTime. I deleted all temp directories; program files folders and all possible traces of all three pieces of this software. I also deleted my iTunes library. I reinstalled all of this software and re-built my Library. NONE OF THIS WORKED!
My 30GB Video iPod works fine and always has - it is only the shuffle for which I have this issue any only since the upgrade.
What do I do now? If no one has another fix, I will be forced to call Tech Support after an experience with them over a year ago I would almost rather throw this thing away!

qswh - I too cannot play the songs that are loaded on the shuffle. Additionally, I get a green & orange light when I plug it into a USB port and then I either get a blinking orange light or a solid orange light from there after.
