My Ipod shuffle should be 1GB why it's only 900MB?

look at this pic:
http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=16946166fk8.jpg
why I've lost 100MB?

I believe part of it is the difference between decimal and binary notation. 1Gb = 1000 megabytes in decimal notation, but 1000Mb, in binary notation, translates to 976Mb. So actually, you've lost 76Mb.
My guess for the remaining 76Mb was the operating system on the Shuffle, but that doesn't seem right. Sounds like it might be due for a trip to the store.

  • My iPod Shuffle 1st or 2nd generation is not recognized in iTunes

We have had this iPod Shuffle since Aug 2008 I believe but only recently started using it.  It was working fine, but when connected to the docking station, I see the status light blick orange 3 times.  No recognition in iTunes.  I have restarted my computer, restarted the iPod, disconnected from the docking station and turned off and turned back on.  It seems to be getting a charge as the light turns green when you turn it on.  We did just get a new iPod a week ago and I don't know if that is some how confusing something.  My 5yr old is not understanding why I can't put different music on for him to dance to   If you can provide any help, I would appreciate it!!  I have a MacBook Pro and I am assuming since my iPhone charges and other iPods, it is just an issue with this earlier shuffle and not my USB ports

    Hello Jane Benstock,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
It sounds like the next best step to take would be to reset the iPod Shuffle.

  • Ipod shuffle 2 nd gen itunes 9 ipod not recognised (windows 7 64 bit OS)

    Hi
I see that others are having issue. My problem is that I have windows 7 ultimate installed (64 bit) along with itunes 9 (64 version) . When i plug in my ipod shuffle 2nd gen 1gb I get the following message " the software required for communicating with ipod and mobile phones is not installed properly. Do you want Itunes to repair this for you?'
Say yes reboot - same error message .Connect ipod not recognised.
    Have reinstalled itunes 9
Have also uninstalled itunes and reinstalled
gone to portable devices under device manager to update drivers still issues
Is anyone getting the same error message and is there a solution
    really frustrating !!!

I'm having the same kind of problem and haved tried pretty much everything my self. We have two computers. One with Vista and the other with XP pro. We have three iPods.
80g video, Touch first generation and touch second generation. Everything works fine with the first two, but windows cannot find the driver for the 2nd generation touch. Altough all drivers seem to be installed. The problem started with the Vista computer. I've uninstalled and re-installed everything and nothing works. Took everything on the XP computer, and the 2nd generation touch is still not recognized.
Of course I-tunes is up to date and all drivers as well.

  • IPod shuffle does not play files 100 MB

Could anyone help me out with the following issue please:
After uploading a large mp3 file (>100MB) onto my iPod shuffle (2nd generation, 1GB) - uploading does not give any error messages - the song just does not play when I disconnect my iPod and hit the play button. It automatically continues to the next file in my playlist which is smaller than 100 MB. I reconnected the iPod to my computer and iTunes, and the file is still in the iPod playlist and can be played in iTunes without any problems.
If I upload a file with a size just smaller than 100 MB (I tried 95 MB) I do not experience the problem mentioned above, it will just play the file normally.
Is this a limitation of the iPod shuffle or is something wrong with my iPod shuffle?
    Thanks for your help!
    Erwin

It's probably no consolation, but I routinely play audiobooks >100MB on my 2nd Gen shuffle.

  • Using my ipod shuffle together with my car stereo

I tried to use a normal cable o listen to my ipod shuffle in the stereo I have in my car and it didn't work. Is there a special cable or it only works with the its own headset?

    Hi-
From the Apple Support site http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3472:
When a standard headphone or audio accessory is connected, you can initiate audio playback by simply switching iPod shuffle from the OFF position to the play in order or shuffle position. The iPod shuffle should be in the OFF position for at least three seconds before switching it back on. iPod shuffle will resume playback of the content that was previously being played at a fixed volume level. This volume level cannot be adjusted from the iPod itself. If iPod shuffle is connected to external speakers or a car stereo, volume adjustment may be possible from those devices.
iPod shuffle will pause audio playback when the device is switched off or when the audio accessory is disconnected
    Hope this helps

  • Abrupt ending of music from Ipod Shuffle

I have had a continuous problem with my shuffle. When either set to random or play straight through, it will almost start playing a particular song then it will lock up or just make a scratch noise like a record player would when the area couldn't played.
I can either change it from random to play straight through or vice versa, and then it will work.
I have tried deleting all the songs, and copying the songs back, but it continues to happen.
Partly as a suggestion, I think the Ipod Shuffle should better keep track of what it is playing and what it can't so that when connected back to the PC, it report that it was unable to play a song to the end.
Also, it should skip over songs it can't play and just move on to the next song, or just start over.
This might be the same problem others have reported... not sure..

I have your problem too - 45gb of music and much smaller iPods (Mini, shuffle, now iPhone). Right now the iPhone has 3gb of music on it, which is 2.1 days of continuous audio. I've had to become accustomed to using smart playlists and being a bit planful with my syncing process. Not all that demanding once you make the break from "needing" to have everything with you always. Besides, do you really need all that holiday music along in July?
In order to get all 20gb of your music into the iPhone, you'll have to seriously downsample the quality. iTunes will do it for you if you really want, but I don't think you'll like the results. You'll have to go into the "Advanced" tab in preferences and change the default encoding settings from 128kbps to something like 40 or 48, close out of preferences. Then select your entire library, click on the Advanced Menu and select "convert selection to AAC" (or MP3 if you're re-ripping to that format). Then go take a walk, get some coffee, etc - ripping 20GB of music will take a while.
I'm not suggesting you do this, but it's one way to compress your entire music library (exception of tracks purchased through iTunes) into the space of the iPhone.

  • How many songs can the ipod shuffle hold

I have about 250 songs and I just need to know how many songs this will hold

The 2GB iPod shuffle should hold about 480 songs (based on 128 kbps AAC files at 4 minutes per song).

  • Time to return IPOD Shuffle to Sams Club

I've spent a couple of hours trying to resolve the blinking orange light from the ipod shuffle without success. Moreover, the ipod shuffle isn't recognized by windows XP. See my last post as to what I did to try and troubleshoot problem. Hopefully, Sams Club will take back the defective product. Don't have time to spend troubleshooting ipod shuffle.

Can't say why XP doesn't recognize your Shuffle, but have had experience with the flashing amber light. I purchased the wall charger and the flashing stopped and the Shuffle received a full charge.
Come to think of it I had trouble getting my Win2K machine to recognize the Shuffle. After purchasing the charger there has been no problem having the Shuffle recognized by the computer. This makes me suspect that the problem you're having isn't because of XP, rather it is because your Shuffle isn't sufficiently charged.

  • MacBook asked to restart right when I plugged in ipod shuffle 2nd generatio

    Help me pls!
Everytime I plugged in ipod shuffle 2nd generation 1GB, MacBook required to restart immediately. (I tried connect with PC, it was ok)
I use OS X 10.5.2. What's the problem with ipod or macbook? Anyone can help?

I was having the same problem. I just downloaded the "iPod Reset Utility 1.0.3", reset my iPod, and so far it hasn't crashed!

  • PowerBook won't recognize iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen, PC will

Just before I throw yet another iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen 1GB down the toilet, I thought I'd check here for "Death Row"/"Life Support" suggestions. I've read similar questions with no, or unhelpful, answers, but here goes anyway:
After a whopping two weeks of use, my iPod stopped being recognized by my PowerBook. Not in iTunes, not in System Profiler, not in UNIX (etc etc). However, it is still being recognized by an old PC laptop I have that runs Windows 2000. So far I've tried the following:
    -- The 5 R's
-- rolling back to iTunes 6 on Mac
-- iPod Reset Utility on the PowerBook (Mac doesn't recognize it so that's a dead end)
-- Restoring the iPod on the PC via iTunes
-- iPod Reset Utility on the PC
-- formatting the iPod as a drive on the PC
-- running Yamipod on both Mac and PC (admittedly, that was desperate)
Nothing, absolutely nothing, got the Mac to recognize the iPod. At this point, I've already used my one phone call with Apple Support (owning an iPod is kinda like being in jail!) and, even though it's under warranty, since I'm in the middle of nowhere in Mexico, getting the iPod back to Apple will cost me, oh, about the cost of a new iPod Shuffle!

If anyone comes across this post because they have the same problem, and you're "tech-savvy" enough to figure out how to reset your iPod, forget it, do yourself a favor and stop looking in this forum.
Below are links to three recent posts, all people with the same problem, none of them got any help from any Apple moderators and got "helpful" answers like "try cleaning your USB port" and "did you sweat too much while using it?"
"Not recognized by OS X or Windows XP -- charges and plays fine, though"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1572062&tstart=0
"Shuffle not recognized by itunes after a couple charges"

"constantly blinking orange light; no longer recognized by computer"

It's a common problem, Apple knows, Apple doesn't care, so, if you can, send it back or, better yet, throw it away and save yourself future headaches.

  • Please help diagnose iPod shuffle problem

Have a 1 GB iPod shuffle that is connected to an iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 MB of RAM and running OS 10.3.9. I am having a problem that seems to be a common one. The iPod Shuffle simply won't mount. It doesn't show up on the desktop, doesn't run iTunes, doesn't show up in iTunes, and the iPod Software Updater keeps saying, "insert an iPod to update it", so it would appear the entire computer doesn't recognize it.
However, the iPod itself isn't bad, because when I plug it into a 12" PowerBook G4, it works fine. I have also managed to get the iPod Shuffle to work with the iMac under only one circumstance. If a wired keyboard is plugged in and the iPod Shuffle is plugges into one of the keyboard's USB ports, it works fine.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Complete update of every piece of software, including iTunes.
    2. Permissions repair, then restart.
    3. Unplugging all USB devices and plugging the shuffle into all three ports, one by one.
As I mentioned before, iPod Software Updater doesn't recognize the iPod. However, when I got a 12" PowerBook to recognize it, I ran the updater there, and it said the current firmware was up to date.
    What else can I try?

    Brad,
How about a few questions right back at ya!
Does it work every time when you plug it into the wired keyboard or did that just happen once? Since you mentioned a "wired" keyboard can I assume you would rather use a wireless one?
Since the keyboard worked fine but plugging the Shuffle directly into the 3 USB ports does not, my guess would be that the design of the Shuffle or USB ports make it hard to seat the device completely - you said the light was on but no mount happens, this might mean that it's not seated completely. I don't own a Shuffle and I would guess Apple would not design the ports badly but this is my guess if the keyboard, which plugs into the very same USB ports, makes the Shuffle mount.
Good luck and I hope you get the Shuffle going soon!

  • Computer won't reconise ipod shuffle

I have a pc with windows xp pro. I already have i-tunes on my system. I am haveing problems with my new ipod shuffle software and hardware! The software only goes to the point where it ask for me to connect the shuffle for possible updates. Once done it just stays there and does nothing. I have tried the other way without the shuffle being connected but at the end the shuffle doesn't appear on my i-tunes source list. I have even downloaed the update from the apple web page but the resulets are the same. It will not work until I can get the computer to reconised the shuffle itself. I don't know what else to do. I need some help.

Just an update, after I posted this I put my husbands shuffle on the charger to see what it would do.  Before putting it on the charger I turned it on and no light came on!  It seems something is disabling the shuffles.  Could it be a virus?  I have virus software on my computer and it isn't detecting anything.  Also, my husbands shuffle didn't work on the netbook even when the indicator light was coming on.

  • My iPod shuffle 3rd Gen icon has been replaced by a generic drive icon

I connected my iPod shuffle 3rd Gen up via iTunes today only to find that Lion was displaying a generic drive icon for it in place of the iPod shuffle icon. I've since tried restoring the iPod using iTunes, and re-starting my MacBook Pro but it's not fixed it. There doesn't seem to be a standard icon library in Lion and I can't find any discussions about this on the various Apple support pages. Any ideas how to get it back?

You need to reinstall iWork from the original source or from backup. If you installed it from a DVD, the Mac App Store version isn't free.

  • I have an Ipod shuffle but i don't understand how it works? I created an Apple account and then went to iTunes to buy music but it's telling me I need an account.

How do i download music for iPod Shuffle?

You can't. The only way to get songs in the Music app is to sync from a computer or to download from iTunes.

  • Why does my IPod shuffle stop after a few hours playing on shuffle when it should go for days?

Why does my IPod stop playing after a few hours on shuffle when it should play for days?

A few possibilities...  (Each numbered item is a separate thing to check or try.)
    (1) What does the shuffle's light do when you connect it to USB?
    (2) If the docking cable plug is not fully inserted, it may not have a good connection for charging.  Make sure the docking cable plug is fully inserted into the shuffle's headphones jack, as shown in this document
iPod shuffle (4th generation): Not seen in iTunes
    (3) If there are other USB devices connected to your computer at the same time, try disconnecting other devices (including USB hub) so that the shuffle is the only device connected to a direct USB port, to see if that makes a difference (you can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected if used).
    (4) If you have a USB power adapter (such as from an iPhone, iPad, or other device), that plugs into the wall outlet, as a test, connect the shuffle's docking cable to the adapter and connect the shuffle.  Does it change from a power adapter?
    (5) Some newer Windows PCs (if you use Windows and not a Mac) may have a "feature" that shuts off full power to the USB port when a connected storage device is no longer mounted by the system.  An iPod is a storage device, and after syncing, iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk (if you are using automatic syncing).  If Windows shuts off full power to the USB port, the battery cannot charge.  To see if this is the problem, does the iPod appear in iTunes when it is connected, even though the battery is not charging?  If it does, select the iPod in iTunes so that you see its Summary screen.  There is an option (checkbox) there for Enable disk use.  If it's not already checked, check that box and Apply.  Enabling disk use keeps the iPod's disk mounted continuously, so Windows will keep the USB port at full power (and the battery will charge).  If the iPod now charges, there may be a way to disable this "energy saver" feature in Control Panels, so that you can turn OFF Enable disk use.  NOTE:  When Enable disk use is turned ON, you need to Eject the iPod in iTunes before physically disconnecting it.
