My iPod skips, freezes, and makes my computer freeze. Is it a virus?

I noticed the problem a few days ago.
-My iPod randomly freezes for about 5 seconds at a time.
-It skips songs sometimes (I will select a song from the library to play, and it will go on to the next one before playing the song i chose, if i try to play that song again, it works.)
-I was going to try reset my iPod to the factory settings, but when I plug my iPod into my computer, it makes the iTunes and My Computer windows freeze up.
Any advice? I'll try just about anything, as this is extremely frusterating.

Hey there,
Restoring the ipod seems like a good idea at this point. I would try putting the ipod into [Disk Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363], and then connecting it to the computer to restore again.
Otherwise, maybe try completing reformatting the ipod through windows. Instructions for this process can be found below.

Hope this helped.

Thank you for your advice, but I solved the problem. I had to place the Developer folder in the Trash. The Developer folder had the old XCode 3 inside of it.

My iPod classic shakes and makes pinging noises, should this be happening?

No, a normal iPod Classic doesn't shake and makes pinging noises, unless you are playing a pinging song. I would suggest you read this exorcism post by tt2

    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connct the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and then clicking on Backup
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.

  • 30GB Ipod skipping/freezing

My 30Gb ipod is having a meltdown. It's decided that it doesn't want to play songs anymore. It can get 10seconds into a song then it starts to freeze up have trouble then skip to the next song and do the same thing. Sometimes it will get half way through a song before it does it or if i'm lucky it will actually play a whole song. I'm not sure how to fix this I'm thinking about doing a restore to factory settings. I did this last year when I had a different but equally serious problem. But I want to see if I can get more information before doing this as it's a last resort.

Since the release and update of iTunes 7, I have not faced any problem, but I heard a lot of articles from this forum about the errors 1417, 1418, 1428 and 50 etc. I could not make any suggestion and find a solution about it, all I could do is to copy some threads from some successful cases mentioned on this forum.
Until yesterday, I finally received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode
    Putting iPod into disk mode
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”, after a few seconds, an Error message pop-up with Error Message 1417, the sign that I have been waiting for quite sometime.
I ejected the iPod and the screen immediately showed a folder exclamation mark (a sign indicating a corrupted or a failure iPod OS). I am forced to put the iPod into disk mode again, connected with the Mac computer and open the Disk Utility
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
It managed to complete the Restore process, and started to sync with the iTunes. However, it got stuck at the song no.238 from the total of 2000. I left it for an hour, but with no process, instead the iPod became “Hot” and the iTunes showed an Error message of 1428. I ejected the iPod from my Mac computer, the iPod’s screen turn to show the famous killer icon;“The Sad iPod“.
This time it was totally dead, even failed to put it into Disk Mode and non of the computer could recognize it. Sigh, I hated to do it but I knew that I must did the following:-
Holding the iPod in my Palm, and hitting it on a surface of a Sofa with 5 attempts.
Did not surprise me, the iPod turned on and it showed the Language Menu on the screen. So, I put it into Disk Mode and connected with my window PC.
The PC showed a sign and indicated that an USB device had been connected with it. I opened the iTunes and did a Restore there.
However, an Error Message 50 showed up, but I were not worried about it, connected it back with my Mac computer with it in Disk Mode. As expected the iTunes opened and allowed me to do a Restore there.
This time it managed to complete the process and a window of register pop up. After the completed the process, the iPod started to sync with the iTunes again, which finally managed to complete the process.
I left it connecting with the AC charger overnight. In the next morning, I switched it on and have a play with it, I am so glad as it is working like a charm.
From the above experience, I would like to share it with the user the following:-
    1. It always better to charge with an ac charger instead of the computer, as when an iPod carrying with very low battery, it may not able to get charge from a computer
    2. Try to connect the iPod with a computer, switching between USB and Firewire
    3. Try to format an iPod with HD problem, with a different kind of computer e.g. Mac or PC, as the formats are totally different, the way it formats may able to solve the bad sectors on the HD
    4. It may get better chance to get your iPod recognized, if you put it in Disk Mode
I hope the following works in your case as I did.

  • Converting to MP3 causes iTunes to Not Respond while using 50% CPU usage and makes my computer stutter

Anytime I attempt to "Createa an MP3 Version" of a track, it will take a REALLY long time to work.
Right now I am attempting to convert an audio book I have which has 88 tracks.  Once I start to convert anything more than 1 track at a time, iTunes immediatly becomes "Not Responding" and takes up about 50% of my CPU the entire time.  It seems like it's doing something in the background but it won't even update the screen anymore, creating weird effects on my screen (Ghost menu bars show up at the top of my screen, etc.).  In addition, once iTunes becomes non-responsive, my entire computer starts to "stutter" meaning that every other second everything momentarily hiccips and stop for a split-second.  This means that while iTunes is converting any multiple MP3 files, if I drag the mouse across the screen, it stops every other second.  Any videos that I try to play pause every other second briefly.  Basically, my computer becomes almost unusable.  Plus, while iTunes is working in the background, different programs randomly jump to the front of the screen.  I will try to be using my web browser while iTunes is working in the background.  Then, suddenly, iTunes pops back up to the foreground in front of my browser (put still won't be responsive to clicks).  My notes program will also flash windows in front of my web browser while surfing, again, only when iTunes is running in the background.
    I really don't understand:
    1.  Why it takes so much time to convert any file to an MP3 file.  Even converting a single track takes a few minutes.  I'll let my Macbook Pro (with Windows) sit for HOURS upon hours trying to convert the 88 track audio book and it always freezes up and never comes back.
    2.  Why iTunes becomes non-responsive so quickly and won't allow the screen to update once it starts "thinking."  It caps out around 50% of my CPU power so it's not like it doesn't have the headroom to refresh the screen while it works.
    3.  Why does iTunes' working in the background affect every other program I am running?  I don't mind if it uses up CPU cycles in the background, but if it makes my computer unusable while doing so, it's really not worth it.
I should state that I love Apple products (even though I use Windows on my MBP for school purposes).  However, I absolutely DREAD having to do anything with iTunes anymore because it has become such a hog on my computer.  Someone please tell me that there is something wrong with my iTunes and/or a setting I should change.  I have already re-installed iTunes from scratch before and that didn't help.

Not a solution, but if the Podcast feed is dormant, why not unsubscribe?
As to the file structure for media on the device it is deliberately obscured as a countermeasure to casual piracy. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. Content put on the iPod by a non-iPod aware product is going to treat it like any external drive. The iPod firmware won't read that media.

  • Moving library from one iPod to another and from one computer to another?

I hope that this is a simple, if complicated, issue:
I have a new iPod Touch (well, it's 2nd generation, but for me that is new!), and an older classic iPod. The older iPod syncs with my old desktop computer, while my new one syncs with my laptop.
I'd like to merge the desktop-based library from my old iPod with the laptop-based library for my new iPod, so that I can retire the older device. Is it simply a matter of exporting the library from the desktop and importing it to the laptop?
    Thanks, folks!

    Hello DWaldo,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is it simply a matter of exporting the library from the desktop and importing it to the laptop?
Yes. Simply copy the content from your old iTunes library over to your new laptop and then import it into iTunes. You can even use your old iPod to do this,

  • Ipod skipping songs and getting stuck

my ipod ive had for about a year
after about four months of its purchase though it started having problems, it would skip songs half way and sometimes not even play some of them.
    whats the problem?
    20GB ipod   Windows XP

I have also been having a similar problem. I have the non-U2 version/20G with the click wheel and have had it for a little over a year. I primarily use my iPod in my car with a Griffin iTrip to play through an FM station. I realized recently, however, that I had not heard some of my favorite songs lately (all purchased music).
After a closer look, the iPod is skipping most of my purchased music, both when using the iTrip and my headphones. Once I select a song, it will shuffle through the entire folder or eventually land on a song and play it.
I was worried that the drive might be on its way out, which is why I'm here. I found a previous post where the answer was that there might be an issue with the accounts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1938283#1938283) and authorization/deauthorization. I have definitely had experience with both, as I moved my iTunes acct to my laptop from my desktop. However, the move was made months ago and my iPod only stopped working a few weeks ago. Since the move, I have connected the iPod to iTunes on the laptop many times, though I have not connected since for several weeks.
Just a few minutes ago, I reconnected the iPod and played some of the songs in question from my iPod's folders and they worked fine. I have since disconnected the pod and tested it again, and it works fine with the headphones as well.
After this, my only conclusion is that I may need to upgrade to a fancy/shiny new model if the problem persists.
Does anyone know what may be causing the issue?

  • 4th gen IPOD 40G spinning and make noise

My ipod shows the apple logo but starts to internally spin and make noise. When I connect to Itunes---it tells me I have a corrupt IPOD. I have tried resetting but to no availabe. AppleCare ran out 2 months ago. Any suggestions.
I guess it will run until the battery is discharged.

I have a 40g 4th gen and a 20g 4th gen. Both having same problem. Had the 40g sent out for repairs. Got it back, worked fine for one week and started making the "hung-up" noises. Repairman told me to give it a couple good "whacks" on it's backside and that seemed to do the trick. Now, if I could just get it to restore I'll be back in business.

  • Can i sync my ipod at work and at home computer

I would like to use an ipod touch to sync with my outlook calendar at work, but I see that I would have to use itunes on my work computer.  Can I sync the ipod touch with my home computer and my work computer?

You can only sync with one computer/iTunes library.  However, you can manage music with multiple computers. See:

  • Ipod skips songs and / or freezes, won't play any song

Listening to my ipod I skipped to next track, but no sound came. Looking at display I noticed that the ipod had skipped about twenty tracks. Tried going back to track I wanted to play but ipod wouldn't play it - time display stuck at 0.00 for a few mins then skipped to next track, same problem. Went to completely different track - same problem.
Checked on itunes - all songs played fine, both those listed under my home hard drive, and those listed under the ipod's drive on itunes.
Resynched ipod - same problem - initially one or two songs would play, but when trying to play the specific track I first tried, it would skip through the next twenty or so tracks then stop playing anything.
Tried soft reset - same problem.
Tried restoring to factory settings - same problem.
Took to apple store genius bar - they made no attempt to work out what was going wrong, just replaced ipod as it was still under warranty. Got home and resynched all songs - same problem!
This suggests it is a problem with the song files, but I don't understand why they play fine on itunes. Also, the file type (mp3), bit rate, sample rate, file size, etc is exactly the same in both locations.
Have tried all troubleshooting tips on this site, and all software is latest version.
    Any ideas?

    Good night, Chris.
Well, it may have lots of reasons: changing files from original folders, uninstall/install codecs in other programs, errors on iTunes Sync service, deleted .dll's, viruses and etc...
To easier the work for you, you can do it in all your iTunes library or make a backup of your files and reinstall iTunes (enjoy to update it, if you haven't yet).
Try "consolidate files" also, it can avoid that iTunes search from the files in wrong places, and automatically organize your .mp3/.aac files.
In a last tool, try to change the iTunes import preferences.
Once you are in a high step level, give a glance on this things on:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2199128
and give a special look to this scripts:

    Hope to help.

  • Groan... iPod skipping songs and other things..

    Greetings,
My iPOD is a year old today,I have the "old and archaic" 20GB iPods. Recently i've noticed that my iPod has started skipping songs, that is I select a song to be played and the song features comes up, but then it skips forward to the song ahead. Also this past weekend, when I tried to play my IPOD and I turned it on.. I got an message that says www.apple.com/ipod/support...Also for some reason when I press play the pause sign and the lock feature is still on my iPOD.
This is only recently, after I got the last iPOD update that I seem to be having problems. A bit ironic, I think.
Anyway, i'd be greatful for some help.
    Thanks

Hi! Had problems on the iTunes. My iPod didnt show up and the technical help person from the phone service told me to restore it. That was just a week after I bought it... It's the first time I have an iPod. Just don't know what's normal or not. Can't imagine why I have all the problems if I'm following the "rules" if you know what I mean. Love the iPod but I'm kind of disappointed by all the problems...
