My ipod touch 2 gen refuses to update to ios 4.2. it keeps telling me version 3.1.3 is up to date. I have downloaded ios 4.2.1 which is supposed to be the most recet update but i dont know how to upgrade it. and each time i try it gives me an error messge. this makes it impossible for me to get ibooks on my ipod. Can any one help please?

Are you sure you have a 2G?
A 1G con only go to 3.1.3.

Thanks. I updated my ipod touch but more importantly I had to specifically request to sync my apps. Once I synced my apps from my ibook, TED and other apps are highlighted back to normal. I will use fewer apps less updates to deal with. Computers are quite a pain with all the constant updates to install.

Ipod Touch 2G will not update!

Ok every time I try to update my Ipod Touch 2G to the new software it goes through the process of extracting the software, and then just gives an error message that says "Itunes could not back up the ipod because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the ipod. Then it tells me to delete the backup and try again but i have NO CLUE how to do that! Please help me!
P.S. I have already tried repairing Itunes and it tells me it repaired successfully!

Hello there,
Head to the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences. When the window pops up, head over to the Devices tab. Here is where you will find a list of backups for your iPod. Go ahead select any backups listed and click the Delete button. Once you have done that, go ahead and try upgrading your iPod again.

Ipod touch 1G will not update to 3.1.2

I have recently purchased software update 3.1.2 for my ipod touch 1G, when updating the process fails with error code (1604), i have tried everything the support pages suggested, when the ipod goes into recovery mode I can restore back to 2.2.1, but when i try and update or restore to 3.1.2 the ipod screen turns to the usb - itunes logo, then the screen turns black but will not go to the apple logo, i have tried restoring back to the orginal software 1.1.5, and the same error is caused, Ive tried restoring to 2.2 then updating to 3.0, and get error (1602)

You should try on another computer if possible. Don't worry it is not going to charge you again; it will act as if it will charge you but it will end up saying that you have already purchased the software and it will start re-downloading it. The trick for error 1604 is attempt to restore, wait until you get the error, close itunes (don't touch the ipod: leave it connected) and open itunes. The ipod should be automatically detected in recovery mode. Attempt to restore again. Errors in the 1600 range (1601, 1602, 1604, etc) normally relate to usb timing or port problems. You can try another port or another usb cable but normally taking it to another computer is the fastest way if you have access.

I have made sure that my ipod is second generation, and i have tried to resotr it twice to fix the problem. I'm getting a little bit frustrated with it. I went to the apple store in metrotwn and the gentlemen didnt even look at the ipod, just told me that it was maybe to old of a generation to support updates. Everytime I go to update my 4g iPod tough, it tells me the network connection was messed with or lost. I check my internet and everything is okay, nothing is wrong with my connection to the internet or the connection between my iTunes and the iPod itself. I have no idea what to do and this is frustrating, because I need to update/restore my iPod, I've never done it before. Also, to get certain apps I need iOS5, HELP!

iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server

Try this:
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

Be sure you turn off all antivirus, spyware, zone alarm, firewall etc. And connect using a different USB hub.

My ipod touch 4g will not connect to my computer. Not to charge or connect to itunes. My usb ports work fine with everything else. I went and bought a new wall charger that came with a synce cord and it works fine, as a wall charger with wont work with my computer. Ive done the whole rebooting, re downloading itunes, redownloading apple software, the whole 9 yards.
What exactly happens when I plug my ipod touch 4g up if it turns on like it suppose to but instead of going to the home screeen with the little lighting bult in the battery is just acts like its not even plugged in. It just goes to connect to itunes screen.
I sent it to apple and they told me that whatever was wrong with it wasnt under warrenty but didnt tell me what it was. Ugh! It doesnt have water damage, I checked the indicators. So what do I do now? I would rather not go and get it fixed and spend 100 dollars. I would rather try and figure it out myself. Help please!

From what Apple said it appears you have a hardware problem. I would either pay to get it fixed or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and discus it with them.

Help! My iPod touch 2G will not boot up!

My iPod touch 2G will not boot.
Heres the specs of the problem:
It turns on with an Apple logo with a spinning wheel under it.
I have tried editing the hosts file with the Apple server codes.
I have tried restoring 16 times. (I log what I do on it)
The iPod has never been jailbroken.
It is an MC model.
It is 8GB.
Its formated for Windows. (Windows 7)
iTunes 10.4
I have tried "The Tiny Umbrella TSS Server with SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1"
I tried "RecBoot" no luck.
My Mom will kill me if I can't fix this. I am going on a 9 hour vacation ride with 7 year old brothers that get really cranky. I leave August 6th, 2011. So I need to have it fixed before then. So i really, really, really need help!

Try uninstalling iTunes and installing the 10.4 iTunes that came out a few days ago. Click start, run and paste "%Userprofile%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates" without quotes. Find iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and delete it. Try restoring again and Tiny Umbrella is only for iPhones. Do not use it on iPod Touch or various errors appear. iPod Touches can downgrade at any time (idk about iOS 5). If it doesn't work, reply. :)

My ipod touch 1g will not play music on a sony audio docking system XDR-DS12iP. The sony dock recognises the ipod and recharges it, however it will not play any of my ipod tunes. I have also bought a ipod adaptor for a ipod 1g touch but this has not made any difference.

- Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
