My ipod touch reboots over and over after updating to 5.1 firmware

I have a 3rd generation 32gb ipod touch that up until recently worked just fine. In order to download use an app I was required to update to 5.1, prior to this I had never updated the firmware so it was using whatever version was on there when I purchased it in 2010. After the update my ipod started randomly rebooting, this happens even if it is just sitting there doing nothing. It happens so often that in a 24 hour period my battery went from full to empty even though I was not even using it. I've tried using the restore option and starting it as a new ipod about 5 times now but it just continues to happen. I also tried downloading and installing older firmware but I get a 3194 error. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I would try deleting the existing firmare update file on yur computer and then try restoring the the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod. If yu still have the problem then it is likely due to a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Ba ro of an Apple store is in order. The update file is located here:

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen and 3.1 update DELETES volume slider

I had a perfectly working iPod Touch 1st Gen/16GB until I updated to 3.1 software. Now I do not have a volume slider.
Yes headphones are in but there is no place to adjust the volume. There is previous, next arrows and play and pause AND its centered in the rectangular area, but no volume slider.
I have restored it 3x in various ways. I have tried 5 times to downgrade the operating system but ALWAYS get an error, so it never completes. Of course the ipsw files where found using google because there isn't any links that work on Apple's site for previous iPhone software. If I try to restore to 3.1 right after that it goes through perfectly.
So it seems that Apple has locked out downgrading once you upgrade! All I want is my volume slider back. How can I get it back if 3.1 deletes it everytime and I can't go back to the previous operating system?
    Thank you.

I too have had this exact same problem, except that I was running 3.0 and hadn't updated to 3.1. I put my ipod on the table overnight, after listening to it, and when I picked it up the next morning, theres no volume slider. I never even unplugged the headphones. Double clicking the home button while on the home screen would bring up the popup to skip songs, and there it says "Dock Connection" even though it not connected to a computer. Multiple reboots an no effect. I've tried different sets of headphones, to no effect. Its like the iPod isnt detecting them being plugged in. The worst part is i DO get sound in the headphones, but no volume control, and the sound level is turned really low. So the headphones ARE working.
I updated to 3.1 just now, and the problem has NOT been fixed. Theres no way anywhere in the settings to adjust the volume. Theres only a limit slider, so I have no way to turn up the volume loud enough to actually HEAR things.

  • Why does my Ipod touch Music/Video apps crash after update to OS4

Updated Ipod touch (64GB) yesterday to OS4. Today I cant run the Music or the Video apps. They will LOAD, but after 3 seconds, the crash. Any ideas?
Ive tried to do the reboot thing (DFU??) that I saw in another post but same issue.
Tried a search several times but have not seen any posts so far with this particular issue.

I'm having the same issue as well, I'm currently at work so as of right now I can't try to restore mine, but the strange thing with mine is that I updated mine the day the iOS 4.0 came out and had no problems until last night. Now the music and video sections keep crashing after just a few seconds. Also all my Podcast are gone, the only things missing and I even re-downloaded them last night and they're still gone.

  • IPod Touch G1 doesn't start after update

I manually updated a friend's iPod from 1.1.? to 2.2.1 using the "Shift/Options + click Restore" method, but when the update started I briefly got the "Connect to iTunes" picture with a tiny white line across the screen.
The screen went white and iTunes displayed an error, which translated in English is "UNKNOWN ERROR 1403", and it featured an Help button that took me to a broken link.
I reset the iPod with Lock+Home, but after the screen went black nothing happened. I tried to use DFU mode but my computer doesn't detect it.
Here is the debug log. I have removed from it the unused network cards.

On the original computer, using the correct account the iPod is tied to, purchase and download the update.
After you have the download then do the install.
You're making it a two step process since that seems to cut down on problems.

  • Ipod touch stuck in recovery mode after update

Help!  Ipod touch is stuck in recovery mode after an update.  I don't want to restore and lose all pictures.

You have no other choice but to restore. You can restore from backup and get the iPod back to where it was when the backup was made.

  • IPod Touch 4G, "Video" program crashes after Update to iOS 4.2

After updating iPod Touch 4G to iOS4.2 the program "videos" just crashes.
Details: I can sync the iPod touch with the computer and the videos reappear on first launch of "videos". All videos play o.k. Second launch of "videos" gives me a white screen for several seconds, then "videos" crashes. Every time I launch it, it keeps crashing.
There are 2 conditions that make them reappear and "videos" runs normally (but only once!):
Method 1: Sync with my MacBook
Method 2: I fully close the program "Videos", then change language on the iPod touch to english (any other language seems to work, too. It's the change that seems to be important). Launching "videos" after that successfully shows all my videos. Second launch and the crash is back. Every time. Until I change the language again.
I tried full restore, and I tried Resetting the iPod, both with no success.
BTW: The Video Files are o.k., I can launch them using playlists and they work just fine.
This is really strange. Can anyone help?
Or, can anyone help how to revert back to iOS 4.1?

Check out the thread I have posted below. I've been having the same problem and have been posting on this thread.
Very annoying problem and it hasn't been solved in the new iOS 4.3 either!!
After two genius appointments, no solution has been offered from Apple, only a new device, which unfortunately came with iOS 4.2 installed, so I couldn't even leave it on the old iOS 3 and not update it. Although having said that, on this device the Video app was working, but only every other time. Weird I know! But now it won't work at all after the newest update... back to square one.
There are work arounds though, as mentioned in the above posts, if you change the music videos into films then they work perfectly.
Strange how it's only Music Vids that seem to cause this problem!?

  • My iPod Touch is frozen and I just updated it to the 4.3.4

It is frozen on the screen where the battery is that shows how much it is charging when it is plugged in and the 'slide to unlock' is showing but it will not let me slide it because it is frozen. I just updated my iPod to 4.3.4 today. And I unplugged it from the computure and it had been about 3 hours since it was done updating my iPod and when I unplugged it I didn't push the disconnect button on the computure. And now when I plug it back in it tries to sync and it says " Itunes could not back up the iPod "Maddie's Ipod" because a session could not be started with the ipod". I don't know what to do to fix this, please help!

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Ipod touch 5g wifi not working after update

I recently did the update for ipod touch 5g, and now i cannot connect to any wifi network. I know the internet and connection is available as my phone and computer connect to my wifi just fine. How can i get my ipod to work on wifi again?

    If not this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • IPod Touch suddenly won't sync after updating app

I installed an update for an app and now my ipod touch won't sync. The mac doesn't see it and it doesn't even charge when hooked up. It charges fine with the same cable on a wall charger. My son's ipod is fine, I've restarted the ipod and the mac, I've reset the ipod, i've swapped usb's and cables, no luck. I've tried holding down the lock and power buttons. Its a 32 gig model, SW version 3.1.3. Can I uninstall an app? I suspect its tic tac toe free causing the problem

    Welcome to the discussions,
you can delete the app on your ipod by touching the icon until it starts to shake, then hit the little cross to delete it.
Did you try to connect in recovery mode to see if it is recognized by your mac? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • I have a Ipod Touch 3rd Generation and before I updated the latest Itunes, it was recognized by my computer fine.  Once I updated Itunes to the latest version, my computer no longer recognizez my Ipod and will not download a driver for it.

I can't download a driver to allow my computer to recognize my touch.  This was the problem after I updated the latest version of Itunes.

    Can anyone awnser this?

    - You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
However, you only can download the current version of app.
    - For apps your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

What may work is to restore the iPhone fom the backup of the iPod.  However, if the two devices ahve different apps that come with the device, that may mess up some of the folders.
