My iPod touch won't turn on--only a blank screen??

Hi! I received a 16 GB, second generation iPod touch for Christmas this year. It was working splendidly until about two weeks ago; I think I must have dropped it it my purse or something, because after I turned it off, it wouldn't turn back on.
Thinking it was the battery, I plugged it into my iHome (iH41). I charged it all night, but when I woke up, it still wouldn't turn on. I tried holding down the sleep/wake button, the home button, and then both, but nothing works. I also plugged it into iTunes--the apple logo appears, then the screen goes blank, alternating this about every five seconds--and it won't sync with iTunes. It won't sync, or charge...
When I plugged it into my iHome today, the date and time are wrong..yet it will play music and go on the internet. As soon as I unplug it, however, the screen turns black and it won't work again.
Could it be that the battery is drained, and therefore only works when plugged in? (I reset the settings, too.) But why doesn't it connect to iTunes?
What can I do? Should I try erasing all content?
Or should I go to BestBuy and try and see what they can do?

The Gen2 Touches and iPhones do not charge on some older docking stations although other things will work.
Use your USB cable and plug it directly into your computer. If you see the battery symbol, then let it charge on your computer.
If that doesn't fix it (and you have tried restart, reset, restore) either take it back to the closet Apple Store, retailer, or arrange to send to Apple.

    Make sure it's fully charged. Hold the Sleep/Wake + Home buttons down (at least 15-seconds) until Apple logo lights up. If that does not work, you may need a new battery.

    try pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears.. this worked for me when my ipod touch didnt turn on or show the apple symbol.. hope this helps

    You can work through the five 5 R's of troubleshooting to rule out the possibility of corrupted software.

    It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
    Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.

    Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damaged part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

    you might have to restore your ipod. you need to turn off your ipod and then hold down the home button while plugging it in to your computer (dont turn it on just hold down the home button).

    Have you've tried holding down the power button for several seconds?
    If so and you're still getting nothing you may have to do a hard restore.
    here's how to do it on Mac OS:
    1. Connect you're iPod to the computer with the sync cable, and open iTunes.
    2. Hold down the power and home buttons for 10seconds, then release the power button (continue holding the home button for about another 6-8 seconds). iTunes should display a message stating that the iPod is in restore mode and needs to be restored before it can be used (or something to that effect).
    3.Hitting the restore button will likely give an error message. You'll need to hold down option and click the restore button, which will bring up a file browser. Navigate to *<your user name>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/* and choose iPod2,12.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw (or similar ipsw file depending on your ipod, or iphone, generally choose the newest one) and click open.
    4. Wait for it to restore, when that's finished you should be able to further restore it using the backup that was generated when you last synced it.
    I have never done this on windoze, but I imagine it's quite similar, just not sure where you'd find the ipsw file.

    Hello. A while ago, my iPod started shutting off randomly, even though my battery was fully charged. After it shut off, I would turn it back on, then it was fine. However, as time went on, the time from when I turned it back on(after it randomly shutting off) to when it would shut off again, started to decrease. Soon, my iPod could not stay on for more then a couple seconds.
       Now, my iPod touch won't even turn on unless it is plugged into the wall power source. It will even rarely turn on when plugged into the computer. I have reset its settings, and also erased all the data. After doing this, I tried to unplug it from the power source to see if it would stay on, and it did not. (still, when the iPod is plugged in, it says it is fully charged.)Also my iPod is updated to the most recent software.
       I am unsure of why this is happening, and quite upset because I have only had this iPod touch since the Christmas of 2010. Is this a defective device, is something wrong with the battery, or is there something wrong with the software?
    If I could have advice for fixing this problem that would be greatly appreciated.

    You can try restoring to factory defaults/new iPod.  However, you likely have a hardware problem. An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store might be useful.
