My iPod won't do anything at all

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere, but my iPod absolutely refuses to do anything but play music through iTunes when connected to my laptop. I can't format it, restore it, delete anything, or add anything. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do?

Whenever I try to turn on the iPod, absolutely nothing happens. Nothing even pops up - no sad face, folder, battery, or apple logo... When I tried to connect to my Mac, it didn't recognize it all. Nothing in iTunes as well. When I try to plug it into an AC Adapter, same problem. Doesn't turn on. What happened?
I have an 80 GB if it helps...

I assume you have tried the reset procedure - switch the hold on, then off and press-and-hold both the Menu and Select (centre) buttons together for at least ten seconds. If that doesn't work, try it a couple more time (as Apple suggest). If you suspect a drained battery, see the next paragraph.
If the battery is fully drained to the point where the iPod will not turn on, then when you plug it into a power supply (or computer) nothing will appear to happen for about thirty minutes. Only then will the low battery message appear on the iPod and a short while after that, iTunes will see the iPod.
If you get to this stage, allow the iPod to fully recharge before unplugging it.

No one here said anything about an update or your device needing it.
FYI, you are not addressing Apple here, we are all users like yourself.
If the device is in recovery mode, the only option is to restore it.  All data on the device is gone.  This should not be an issue if the device has been used as designed and regularly synced/backed up.

  • Brand new Ipod touch.  we attached to the computer because we don't have wifi.  Now what.  We set up in ID in itunes.  The Ipod won't do anything, just shows itunes on screen but won't budge.

Apple doesn't create installation disks for OSX 10.7 and later. You can create your own disk/USB bootable installer, but this requires downloading the installation package from the app store first.
    1) Make sure you have a stable internet connection. Try directly connecting via ethernet port, versus Wifi, if you are experiencing a weak Wifi Signal or intermediate loss of connectivity
    2) From the App Store, go to the Menu Bar, Store > Sign out.
    3) Navigate to the /Applications folder and drag the partially completed download of the installer to the trash.
    4) Open the App store, sign back in, and redownload Mavericks.

  • My 5th gen Ipod won't do anything but show the " Connect to your computer, use itunes to restore" screen. However my computer nor anyone else's will recognize my ipod. What can I do?

My ipod will not do anything but show a screen that asks to "connect ipod to computer, use itunes to restore" My computer however will not recognize my ipod at all so there is no way to restore my ipod. I am not skilled in computers but if anyone has a step by step that would be great.

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC?  Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • IPod Won't Start Up at All

I have a 3rd-Gen 30GB iPod that I recently purchased used, and it worked perfectly for two days. I had the iPod plugged in and charging, and it was on it's normal "OK to Disconnect" screen. Without thinking about it, I did a hard restart (pushed the power button, turned computer back on), and whilst waiting for my computer to restart, went to listen to my iPod. I went to Shuffle Songs, but all the iPod did was go straight through each file, not playing a bit of the song. I turned the iPod off, and then tried to turn it back on, but to no avail. I can feel, and to a lesser extent, hear the hard drive spinning, but the screen shows nothing. My computer seems to recognize the iPod when I plug it in, but it never connects. Is there any way at all to fix this?
Note: I have no local Apple store, so there's no way I can get this repaired.

    See these.
    iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize the iPod is connected.
iPod only shows an Apple logo and doesn't start up.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
Restoring using disk mode is often the key.
If none of the above help, it will need service.

  • Hey, my iPod won't turn on at all and it is completely charged, yet completely dead. Please help!!!

    Hello,
My iPod is not turning on at all, even though it is completely charged. It is completely dead. PLEASE help ASAP!
    Thank you

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ipod won't do ANYTHING, not even charge, when i connect it to computer.

So I have the 5g and have never had a problem before until now. I connect it to my computer: nothing happens. doesn't wake up, doesn't charge, doesn't sync. tried it on another computer: same thing. Tried all of my usb ports: nothing. The usb ports are good, also. Tried another cable: nothing. Now here is the interesting part...I connected it to my third party car charger and it works fine. The thing is, I can't sync it with the car charger...So if any one can help, please don't be shy.

Ok guys, I read somewhere NOT ON THE APPLE SITE that this could be a problem with something called the logic board. You can either buy one and replace it yourself or there are some sites that will do it for you. I'm not sure if apple will do it unless you bend over backwards, call 15 phone numbers, and pay for some sort of ipod protection crap or even at all. So do whatever you think is right and I hope everyone can get their ipods workin' again.

Hello, my name is Ed. I'm with all my Ipod, I have (4) they all keep freezing up on me when I play my devices. But my Ipod Touch I don't have this problem. On my classic I'll hold down menu botton on the wheel. But thing happen, I'm tired of letting battery go dead and recharge it, just to freeze up again. PS I don't know operation system on my ipod classic, but on my mac book pro i am using (11.0.2) my mac os x (10.6.8). So, I try to take a quess at my os my classic

Holding down the center/select button and the menu button will reboot your ipod. See if that helps. Also, I'd recommend something else- I had nothing but trouble with my ipod classic until I spent $20 to get Mac OS Mountain Lion. It did what you said and sometimes wouldnt play, or wouldnt power on...
Try rebooting your ipod and let me know what happens and maybe in the future obtain Mountain Lion to aide your ipod in functionality.
    Good luck!

  • My iPod Won't Show Anything But A Brighter Black Screen.

My iPod Touch 5g had been working just fine for the last 8 months, and even this morning. But, as I was getting into my car, I turned it on and nothing but a brighter black screen showed up. After a few tries of just pressing the on/off button it finally turned on. It worked for a while then, it just wouldn't turn on at all. When I got home, I plugged it in to the charger and it did the same brighter black screen. It's like it turns on in the background but doesn't let the actual screen show. I've plugged it into my computer and the wall, I've held the home and on/off button together but neither are working. It will also play music from my speakers if I press play on the speakers but it won't show me anything but a brighter black screen. Any tips?

Brighter black?  Black is black.  It has no shades.
Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If that's the case, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.
