My ipod won't restore. It keeps coming up with an error message. that says "The iPod '_____' cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application." How do I fix this?
The only thing that's open is my itunes, so i don't see how anything on my iPod can be in use by another application.
It also does this when I try to eject it, so I end up having to just unplug it instead of ejecting it, which I know is not good.
And if it matters, sometimes I plug in my iPod and it doesn't register on either the iPod or in iTunes that my iPod is plugged in, so sometimes I have to re-plug it in. And my iPod these days will continue to say that it's syncing even though iTunes will say it's finished.
    Please help me!

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

The iPod won't restore an when i try to restore my iPod in comes up with the Error 3194, from what i can call the error apppears when it says verfiying with apple i have tried changing host, no luck.

This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.

    - Then try on another computer
You can restore from backup to get things back
    To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

ipod video 60 GB   Windows XP   white

I, too, am having troubles restoring my G5/video iPod. First, iTunes indicated that my iPod was running 'an old version' and to run iPod Updater to update it (even though I had run updater a month or so before). Then, my iPod would not play music that I bought from iTunes (skipped over them w/o playing).
1 - I tried clearing these songs from the iPod and restoring them, but they still would not play. (Some of the playlists that I changed on my PC won't sync properly with my iPod either - on the iPod, the playlists are the old/unchanged ones).
2 - I tried resetting my iPod (hold the middle button and menu button to restart). No change in behavior.
3 - I ran the latest iPod Updater 6-28-2006? but that didn't solve my problems. I still couldn't play my recent iTunes music. (I think I could still play music that I bought a few months ago, though).
4 - As a last resort, I used the iPod Updater to RESTORE my iPod, which caused my PC to freeze, requiring a reboot. Now, my iPod shows a b&w message "Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to Restore" when it starts up, and when I connect it to my computer it shows a different "Do not disconnect" screen (smaller, b&w 'not' sign). iPod Updater does not recognize my iPod any more, although my PC shows "Removable Disk" in the Drives list.
5 - I stopped the iPod.exe process and I tried to format the iPod under M$ Windows, as suggested, but the format dialog won't let me. The iPod Updater application tries to run but fails with a "disk write failure".
HOW CAN I FIX MY IPOD?

  • Refurbished ipod won't restore

I received a refurbished ipod to replace my old one, when the battery on my old one died (a 3rd generation). I followed the steps to set up my new ipod, installing the latest versions of itunes and ipod updater, then restarting my computer, and opening ipod updater. However, when I connect my ipod to the computer, supposedly the restore button on the ipod updater should become active, but it does not. I am not sure how to restore my ipod. I tried unsuccessfully to reset my ipod, but its screen remains blank. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Can you find another PC and do a Restore there, it is even better if you can find a Mac instead.
] Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • IPod won't restore to factory default

Had to do a restart(the menu & select button) after it froze while on a laptop with windows vista while trying to sync music. Since then, trying to do a restore on both the laptop w/ vista AND my PC w/ XP and i get the same message every time. The iPod after every restore reads "Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore." and plugging it into iTunes it says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes" After EVERY restore this has happened, I have tried putting the iPod into Disk Mode beforehand and leaving it to charge for like 4+ hours and nothing seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks ahead of time!

By outlet do you mean a USB port on your computer?  If so does your I pod show up in iTunes?  If not you will have to follow the appropriate steps for your iPod not showing up in iTunes for your particular OS.  Are you using a Mac or a PC?

  • IPod Classic [Error 1439] - iPod won't restore

My iPod Classic was working fine until yesterday when I plugged it in to update my iTunes library.  iTunes said the iPod was corrupted and I must restore it and lose all data loaded onto it. That seemed bad enough, but then the restore failed and I got this message about Error 1439. I looked this up and it was on a page with lots of other error codes, I tried all the steps recommended and it has got me nowhere. So now I've got an iPod that when it is unplugged says it has zero songs on it but in terms of the space available it says it is full.  When I plug it in it isn't recognised in My Computer and iTunes only recognises it initially when I plug it in with the restore screen I've already mentioned that features the restore button that leads straight back to the Error 1439 message - after that the iPod disappears from iTunes completely and you can't even eject it because there is no recognition that it is plugged in at all. Following the steps recommended in the iPod Classic troubleshooter / wizard didn't help, so now I just don't know what to do. Both the iPod and iTunes are updated to the most recent version, so has anyone got any useful advice? - The fact the Error 1439 message has already appeared on one of Apple's help pages along with other possible error messages suggests to me this must have happened to someone else before.  I can't call Apple's helpline isn't an option as I bought the iPod new in 2010 and apparently that means I'm not entitled to any help from them. So I need some help here please, but if all you can suggest is to post me back to the page about this in Apple Support please don't bother, I've already been there and the advice given doesn't work. Thanks and I look forward to reading your suggestions.

  • My ipod won't restore,error 6. I would really appreciate any advice,please

I bought a new ipod touch 8gb, 2nd gen 5 months ago, Its always had a few problems whilst syncing like itunes crashing but now I cannot restore it, I have tried so many times I have lost count, 'ipod cannot be restored error 6' keeps on coming up every single time I try to restore it.
I have windows vista, could that be why its not working, Ive tried:
-Deleting the ipod software on the computer,
    -Disabling the firewall,
    -Different usb ports,
    -Restarting the computer...
I don't know what to do, I really appreciate any advice at all as to why it's doing this and how to fix it, I've read the apple support pages but they do not help.
Many thanks, I look forward to hearing from someone, anyone soon

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Ipod won't restore, not recognized by pc or itunes

Pressing the select and menu buttons will not restore the ipod.
My PC does not recognize the ipod as a disk on the computer and itunes does not recognize the ipdod so it won't update. This also means the ipod updater program won't work to update my ipod.
All this began after updating to newest versions of itunes.
I have gone through the apple recommended procedures, step by step, including deleting and reinstalling newest itunes and ipod updater software.
I need to be careful not to complain, because that is against apples discussion policies, so can't go there. Just looking for a solution, apparently there are many of us.

ok after trying a few times to do about ANYTHING I finally decided to uninstall EVERY bit of hardware and software related to ipod and itunes on my PC after uninstalling it all but saving my music files (go to your documents and settings folder and taking out the folder "itunes music" which is under "my music" will save all your music from deletion) after uninstalling everything I put the original cd I got with my ipod straight from the box into the computer. after apparently "reconfiguring" my ipod and reinstalling the software for updating as well as itunes I managed to get my ipod to work right. songs started to be uploaded on my ipod and they work! although it hasnt throughly updated all my songs in one sitting its made considerable progress in comparison to what I wrote on my last post. I think I will take a risk and do all the itunes/ipod updates to see if it was simply just a small glitch. if it screws up my ipod again I vow I will never upgrade and I will think twice about buying another apple product. especially after hearing about $50 for techsupport! thats absolutely dispicable.
I hope this works for others and not just myself. I also hope that the ipods update 100% and not just in small 100 song cycles or so.
*small addendum* if anyone thinks this might help them but my instructions are to vague feel free to email me and I'll try to explain further. my email is [email protected]

  • IPod won't restore, format, or update

I received this iPod as a Christmas gift 2005. I received another one Christmas 2006 so I gave the first one to my 12 year old daughter (right after warranty expired). She has used it for a month, and now all these problems. At first I thought she may have uploaded a virus onto the iPod, either by song, or file. But I know if that was the case, a simple restore would fix it. No luck so far. Can anyone help? I have attempted to list below all the things that I have seen in the past two days of trying to fix this problem.
    -Error messages seen on iPod:
    Sad iPod icon
    “Please wait.
    Very Low Battery”
    “Connect to your computer.
    Use iTunes to restore.”
(Repeated in 3 different languages under the English version)
When iTunes DOES recognize iPod, these things happen:
System taskbar balloon says “Apple IPOD connected to USB”
    -Error message seen in iTunes:
“iTunes had detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod.”
Only the "Summary" tab comes up w/ this description under:
(the picture showing is of an older iPod model-the picture of my avatar)
    "Name: IPOD
    Capacity: n/a
    Software version: n/a
    Serial number: n/a
    Format: unknown"
After I press the restore button (all other usb devices having been disconnected), it begins and then this error message:
"The ipod “ipod” could not be restored. And unknown error occurred (1418)"
I have taken a known working iPod apart, swapped hard drives. At that time neither work.
I have swapped batteries only…still does not work.
    Forcing into “disk mode” works.
SRV “Diagnostics” boot Sept 09 2006 (auto/manual) works.
    I have reset the iPod.
    I tried different usb ports.
I have restarted the computer with iPod connected.
When trying to update iPod w/ software 2005-10-01:
It tells me that the iPod is not mounted after it recognized that I connected an iPod...
or it gives me error message:
iPod Universal Updater has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    and shuts down
I have also tried to use windows to format the hard drive, nothing happened.
I have tried on both my home computer and my work computer.
I hope someone out there has seen these problems before and knows exactly what I need to do. I really hope I don’t have to take it to a service center. I have tried to troubleshoot the hardware with a known working iPod. Maybe I didn’t do something correctly. But when I put the working iPod back together, it works fine Please help.
    Thanx in advance!

Yes, as a matter of fact I did see that article...and I believe I tried everything that it suggested. And other sites that I visited kind of made me think its something reading wrong, because at first I thought it was simply the hard drive that needed to be replaced, but then when i swapped with a good one and still had the same issue, I realized that it could be several things. But not knowing the complete ins and outs of the construction, maybe I did something incorrectly. Can anyone tell me how to reformat with a windows disk or something. Because at times I can get it to mount, it just seems to be a game and cat and mouse. One thing works, when the other won't. I regained hope when forcing into disk mode was successful. Not sure if that was false hope or not. But thanx for the suggestion.

  • New ipod won't restore from icloud

If I set up my ipod as new, can I still restore from icloud?
I purchased a new ipod touch yesterday, and in the course of setting it up, it will not restore from icloud, so I thought I might be able to set it up as new and still restore from icloud once I got it set up, is this correct?  I would update from itunes, but my computer's operating system won't allow me to update to the newest version of itunes, so the ipod and computer won't "talk" to each other.

Do other devices now connect to the router OK?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Try on another network as Apple recommended.

  • 40GB CLick Wheel iPod -- Won't Restore

My iPod (less than a year old) had been turning itself off, refusing to play songs, stopping in the middle of songs, not turning on, and randomly freezing. I tried resetting it. I updated all of the software for both iTunes and the iPod. After the problems did not stop, I restored the iPod. It seemed okay at first, and my music was loading onto it from iTunes. Then, my computer shut itself off and will no longer recognize the iPod. Although I know at least 1,000 songs had been reloaded when the computer shut off, only 8 are on the iPod now, and the problems I was experiencing in the very beginning are still happening (stopping in the middle of songs, refusing to play, etc). I tried restoring it again, and it won't even do that. Any suggestions??

Same problem here... I have had the 40gig ipod for a little over a year... one day the songs would only play half way through.. and would skip to random songs. I put the new updater on, wiped the ipod, got the new version of itunes... then when i tried to reload the songs I discovered that my 40gig ipod had been reduced to an 8gig. Everytime it gets to about 8 gigs... the ipod starts whirrring and itunes disconnects it... the ipod stays frozen for about 5 minutes then it starts flashing... the do not disconnect sign again. I have tried everything... letting it cool, loading songs an album at a time, reloading old updaters, old versions of itunes, restoring the ipod a dozen times... all with the same effect. Note, this ipod is stationary, is not traveled with is merely my entire 5000 song collection hooked into my stereo. I think the disc drive has gone bad... but apple says that "restore" would fix that...(I don't know how).
