If you get a network timeout error, then disabling the computer's security software duirng the download and update usually resovles that error.
If that is not the error what is the wording of the error message.
Note that only a 3G or 4G iPod can go to iOS 5. A 2G iPod can only go to iOS 4.2.1

My ipod won't sync about 89% of my library because 'it doesn't support the song' but I previously had the songs on my ipod, downloaded from the same computer. Itunes on my computer had issues and I'm now re syncing all music. How do I get my music back on my ipod if Itunes says it can't be synced?

In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

While syncing it says that it can't read/write to the iPod. I've reset to factory settings and it still won't work.

Every time I connect it to sync it says it's been sync'd with another library and do I want to erase and sync w/ the current itune library.....it has never been sync'd with another itunes library....just this one on my mac. When you still have the problem after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod then you very likely have a hardware problem and an appointment a th Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The 1G iPod can only go as high as 3.1.3. The 1G does not have an internal speaker or volume buttons on the upper left edge.

It had not been used for awhile and most of the songs that were on there were gone when I turned it on. I was trying to sync to update the library.

Weeks, months, years? It's possible your battery is dying. Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Before you restore the iPod from the backup that Dave had you make yu have to transfer stuff from the iPod to the computer since the backup does not contain the apps themselfes, music, synced phots and some other stuff. To see what a backup contains see:

No. In fact, my ipod detects the livebox and the network but I can not connect to the internet.
