My iSight is broken?
My iSight fell off my computer desk and doesn't seem to be working. Is there anything that is capable of breaking if this happens? Is it fixable and if not, where can I find another one? I much prefer it to the built-in webcam.

If your external iSight is not visible as a Firewire device in System Profiler as shown in this image

Apple has not sold external iSights for several years. However, you can sometimes still find them for sale in local ads, at computer stores, or on internet auction sites.
These external iSights are great cameras, but they are getting old as electronics go, and you have no idea how the one you buy now has been used or treated by its previous owner(s).
I suggest that you buy locally and test any external iSight on your Mac before you pay for it. If you cannot do that, (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks.

Camera Graininess (video noise) on the iSight
Help- I have some really bad camera noise on the iSight and it seems to be in every application (iMovie, Quicktime, iChat). I'm wondering if my iSight is broken, or I'm doing something wrong?
I took a screen shot of it, with all the lights in the room on. It was very bright, and I'm still getting a lot of camera noise. help!

What application did you use to capture and enlarge this image? Your full-sized image is 991x736 pixels. iSight's native resolution is 640x480. Any camera noise is exaggerated when you enlarge the image beyond the native resolution.
Considering the size of the webcam image you have made and the quality of your lighting, your picture does not look "really bad" to me. However, if you want higher quality images, consider using a compatible Firewire camcorder for your video webcam needs. Most 2MP or higher digital still cameras will deliver better still images than any webcam.
If you want to try for better quality than this with your external iSight, try making another image when you can use daylight to illuminate your location. As explained in Use good lighting for the best iSight picture, the KIND of light you use is as important as the AMOUNT.
For some other suggestions, consider the suggestions in Improving Your iSight's Picture.
If you want other ideas, consider the How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional suggestions for taking your iSight to a different location or a different Mac to see if the image quality is the same.
Finally, operating temperature can also effect camera noise. If your location is unusually (uncomfortably) hot, or if your iSight's air vents have been blocked so its temperature has risen, consider a cooler environment or unplugging your iSight for an hour to let it cool before repeating your tests. If your location is subject to atmospheric dust, consider gently vacuuming your iSight to remove any dust that may be restricting the flow of air through the vent holes in iSight's case.

Since MacOS 10.6.5 update iSight is not working anymore
iSight doesn't work with any software (Photo Booth, iChat, Skype, etc). Photo Booth says there is no camera connected. Skype states that "Camera in use by other application" and "No video camera connected" (both messages are displayed one after another indefinitely until Skype crashes). Every time I try to use iSight its green light blinks quickly. It seems it stopped working since MacOS' last update.
I have tried EZ Jim's tips to jmcopeland (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2646823&tstart=15) without success. How can I test if iSight is broken?

That's right. I've tried all the suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 one by one, in the recommended sequence. I also tried to reset PRAM and no success again. The symptoms are exactly the same for a brand new user.
I'm still testing removing AV third-party software. For now the problem isn't caused by Perian, Flip4Mac and Firefox plugins (I decided for not installing them again for now). I'll test Skype and VLC tomorrow (besides I think it won't work anyways).

There is a still conflict between the information in your posted question and your Profile System info at the bottom of the post. My following response is still based on the assumption that your Lion System info is the correct one:

The internal iSight on my Core2Duo MacBook Pro 15" appears to no longer be working. Is this an isolated issue to me, or has anyone else experienced this? Please help!
Thanks, all through the night i have tried various remedies and fixes that I thought might help, right down to wiping and doing a factory restore, all to no avail. The camera will work for 3 - 5 seconds as described in other threads, and then it seems to freeze, almost like when a USB webcam is unplugged on a PC while its recording. The image displayed goes black, but the LED stays on until i reboot the machine, in addition, until I reboot, the device no longer shows up in the system profile. As I said, i tried PMU reset, Zapping the P-RAM, repair permissions, fsck from single user mode and finally a format and reinstall. The only thing im worried about is that If i get a replacement machine, I'll get a lemon that has even worse issues than the isight being broken (like a display that leaks light -- mine seems to be fairly good, or a laptop with a bad logic board) I need my machine for school starting on Monday and I dont want this to turn into a months long affair. If I'd known it would have been shoddily manufactured, I would have kept my AlBook instead of giving it to mum :/

My isight camera is not working. It does not show up when I use skype, ichat, or photobooth (there is a black screen and a camera with a slash through it instead of the camera).
I've looked through the apple support for advice and no the System profiler does not recognize the isight camera.
I reset the smc and the pram and still no camera.
I have tried all updates.
The only thing I can think is that my camera is broken. I'm not sure if my computer is still on warranty so I don't know how much it will cost to have it professionally repaired. You may have already done this, but be certain you have tried all relevant suggestions from:

If your iSight problem occurs in more than one Apple app and more than one user account on your Mac, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does not show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

Well, I think the DVD drive broek on my G5. Also, I tok my new DVD drive and hooked it up, and it seems not to be compatible. What can I do? Are there compatible drives - yes, I NEED to use the DVD drive for their school. Thanks.
I am not home to see right now, but it is running on 10.5.8, and is the iSight model the one JUST before everything went Intel. I can connect by USB 2.0 or Firewire (old). If the NEW superdive I just bought will NOT work, which one will?
(Is there a way that the internal DVD player may not run becuase 'bad permissions' which may bneed a refresh? It will take a DVD, but will not run it, and will eject it after failure to run the program).
I need a fix quickly as my some needs to do his lessons with the DVD drive.

I've looked around everywhere for a solution, but absolutely nothing I've tried so far has worked, so I think this might be an issue with the new security update. After installing security update 2010-005 on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.4, iSight no longer functions with third-party applications. Skype crashes immediately upon attempting load my video during a video call or opening the video preference pane, and ManyCam quits as soon as it opens. I also updated my other MacBook with OS X 10.5.8, but it has had no issues with iSight and third-party applications.

I am using the latest software, including SU 2010-005 on my MBP. Its iSight works fine with my Apple apps. (I don't use any third-party software that can use webcams, so I cannot test that.)
(1) If you have not used Disk Utility to repair permissions since you installed the update, restart Mac and repair permissions now. Then test your iSight again. If your problem remains, try the normal iSight troubleshooting process:
(2) For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
You can use QuickTime X and iMovie to test whether your iSight works with Apple apps. Test with only one app open at a time; i.e., test each app one-at-a-time before you try ManyCam.
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested in the Troubleshooting app often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
(3) If your iSight is recognized in System Profiler but does not work with any app in any user account you test, you may have had a bad download or install of SU2010-005. Try reinstalling as follows:
• Restart Mac.
• Repair permissions.
• Download and install Security Update 2010-005 (Snow Leopard - Client)

• After the restart that completes the install, repair permissions again.
Then test iSight one more time using the Troubleshooting method. It should work.

Integrated mic next to iSight broken

I am attempting to make a podcast with what comes with the Macbook. It can't do it. Just want to warn others after discovering it might affect a lot of Macbook owners. If making video postcasts aren't your thing, you are okay. but if not being able to make video podcasts or Youtubes with the integrated camera and mic would be considered a show-stopper for you, then listen up.
Machine: Macbook, May 2007 Generation
Program used: iMovie '08 in iLife '08 as bundled with the Macbook.
Mic: Integrated mic (the left dot of the iSight)
Video cam: Integrated iSight
What I did: opened up iMovie, clicked Apple-I to record a movie. Movie gets made, but during playback you can hear an obstrusive high-pitched beep beep beep. Like four times a second. The beeping rates varies from time to time, but for the most part is just like that.
When you do an Apple-I on iMovie, the recording function will by default use the integrated mic and integrated iSight. Just to be crystal clear on this.
If you search on google for Chirp Isight you should get a lot of hits on past users having the same problem.
iChat/Skype: This will also be a show stopper for you anytime you want to do anything involving video and audio. As long as you want to use the integrated capturing devices. Like iChat. Skype. Etc.
Audio only recordings are fine. It only kicks in when both the integrated video and audio is in use.
Because I took so much care in keeping the Macbook clean and scratch-free, and taking so much time to install all my software and my settings. I am kinda peeved that I have to send this in for repair. This is pretty much ruining my start of college. I am simply speech-less.
Anyway, just a heads up to everyone, if you just got your Macbook, check for this problem. If you don't have it, awesome. Please let me know. I am starting to get the sense all Macbooks suffer from this. Might be a design flaw.
Notebook history: This macbook has been used for around a couple weeks. It's shipped directly from Shanghai, brand new. It's been pampered.
Right now I don't have any positive vibes left because this problem isn't really the first problem I have had with the Macbook. I hope Apple can repair this thing and turn the tide of bad luck I have been having with this thing.Hello clf-toronto

As you know, we users who post in Discussions have found no solution yet, so the problem appears to require professional service for resolution. In the meantime, we are still waiting for some published info from Apple.
I expect that Apple searches its warranty & repair work for quality issues and trends, but, if you have not (and do not) contact Apple or your retailer for service on this issue, please report your problem via MacBook Feedback. Unlike posting in this user forum, Feedback goes directly to Apple.

If it only happens during video chat, ask you chat friend if anyone else has the same problem with her. Perhaps her computer is sending bad video? This is especially likely if nobody else with whom you video gives you the same strange image problem.

Let me guess. You did an automatic transfer of your accounts and software from the old computer to the new one? If so, you merely transferred the problem (whatever it was) across, resulting in your new computer naturally having the same issue.
As has been previously mentioned, your best bet is to do a clean install and reinstall your software from the disks. Things like Email data can be imported later. -
Error during 10.8.2 Update - Appstore and iTunes Broken

It happens to turn of my monitor in different situations. Sometimes i believe i have my graphic video broken ! In my town i don't have Apple doctors so i dont risk to go to a service non authorized from apple !
For example there was a day when it turns off when a simply pinch with thumb and 3 fingers for launchbad ...and the opperating sistem it should be restart from power button ! That was when i had Mountain lion 10.7.5 update
Other situation was with photoshop cs6, cs5, cs4 30 days trial versions ...i couldn't buy any versions so i decided to test a earlier versions that can match with my sistem requirements. In all of this three situations my display had turned off after opening a image or photo or 3d graphics in photoshop...anyway sadness.
Other situation : One day i was simply relaxing surfing facebook and ...than i've just simply open an advertising link ...and on that page i was waiting to load a video that used another player than flash player of youtube. Even two seconds didn't stayed open and trust me it turned off my display once again !
After Mountain Lion :
I told my story to to someone who holds an MacBook Pro i5 etc. and he told me to test the new mavericks maybe it's something broken in my operating system.... and believe me after 2 days of happiness with OS X MAVERICKS , last night my computer restarted because of a problem, and 2 hours ago again....why ? i don't know ! Maybe Video RAM or maybe Memory RAM or Maybe simple conflicts between Trial Photoshop and OS X or maybe my macbook it's 2 old...or i don't know ....for how much i used this mac it should run as an mustang ! MacBook Pro i7 Mid 2010 HDD 500 , 4 GB of DDR 3 , Intel built in Graphic 288 and an NVIDIA GE FORCE 512 , 15 inch display monitor , 283 real cicle counts ( my mac was used as an iphone while charging and using battery) ...i don't know what to do ! If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Mid 2009 13" MBP iSight camera bad picture quality in photo booth
My daughter's stock mid 2009 13" MBP 2.26 ghz intel core two duo has a problem with the isight camera. The isight camera is built in to the screen. The isight camera works some of the time flawlessly and other times it comes out real grainy and with small colored pixels all over the screen like colored static (about 20% to 30% of the photo booth screen is affected but the rest of the screen outside of the photo booth app is unaffected). She only uses it in photo booth but we've tried the iChat app and the same thing happens there too, once she couldn't get the MBP to connect to the isight camera (it just showed a black photo booth screen), so she closed the lid of her MBP and reopened it and it worked. All of the software and firmware is up to date and we've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, it didn't do anything to fix the problem. It seems like there's a wire loose in the computer from the screen to the computer base, only because I can move the screen back and forth and the picture quality changes, the amount of static on the picture will move, go away or get worse. I had the screen changed in early 2010 (January or February) (the MBP was about 5 or 6 months old then) at the apple store under warranty due to dirt under the screen's glass (manufacturing defect). The photo booth picture static problem comes and goes, but here lately it comes more than it goes. The screen in general is in good shape and doesn't have any detectable problems with it, it has a good picture and no dead pixels, the problem seems to be only isolated to the isight camera. Can some one help with this problem? How long of a warranty is given on the warranty repairs (like the screen change they did in early 2010)? If apple does a repair on it and finds a wire that has rubbed the insulation off of it on a hinge causing a short and the isight problem, as a result of a sloppy repair from the first warranty repair, will they cover it under warranty again even if it's been over a year since they changed the screen? Also how honest will apple be if they do find out it is a problem caused from the first screen replacement, will they own up to their mistake? If I don't agree with apple's repair decision, can I get a second opinion from an outside source, third party, and if it's diagnosis different than apple's and can be proven, can I still get apple to do and pay for the repairs and labor if it turns out to be their fault from the first warranty screen replacement?
The reason why I'm asking is, I took my wife's white macbook in about a year ago for the famous cracked top cover replacement (under warranty) and when I got the computer back, the isight camera didn't work, so I gave it back, they took it apart a look at it and said there was nothing wrong with it and gave it back, then the screen wouldn't come on so after 4 hours at the Apple store they decided to send it to Austin, TX. for repairs (I'm in Ft. Worth TX.). Apple in Austin said it needed a new main board. They said the old one had water damage to it. We never had water anywhere near the computer, not even in the same room. It was working fine when we took it in, we took it in just to get the plastic top case, that cracks all of the time, replaced under warranty. And then they wanted us to pay for an $800 main board because some how while they were doing the top cover replacement it got water damaged. I argued with them and they finally gave me a one-time offer of them paying for half of the repair and labor or if I disagreed or left the store I would have to pay the whole amount if I chose to have the repairs done. So I ended up having to pay $467 for a year old macbook main board that was water damaged in their possession during their repairs. I like Apple and their products but I am worried about giving my daughter's MBP over to them for repairs because of this incident, it's an honesty issue with how honest they will be with what they find because they won't give back the old parts for analysis by a third party to verify their diagnosis.

As I say it is a personal thing.
I can give you some information about the camera and laptops over the past few years.
Basically in early Laptops of the MacBook Pro and MacBook range the cable did tend to fray at the point where it passed through the hinge. It did take a well used laptop that had the lid open and closed frequently to cause this. (your 2009 model might just be in that group - I have no firm dates or models I am afraid)
Later models have this rerouted so that this does not happen.
However the cable has then tended to get pulled from the camera end and become loose.
This On Line Self fix site has pages about some models (The one I have linked to may not be yours)
I have linked in to later pictures in the sequence but there are navigation points to work back to the start.
Note:- they use pretty specifc specialest tools as well in these pics.
Doing this would certail Void any Warranty you have left.
From Posts mainly in the iChat and the iSight areas I have gathered that it seems common for Apple to replace the Screen as a whole rather than fiddle with getting solely at the camera.
Apple has this article on Trouble Shooting an iSight
Basically it says try several apps then try logging in on another Mac User account to see if it is App based or User based or in fact System wide.
If System wide then resetting the SMC/PMU is the only suggested fix. (Which I did read you had done)
In addition to that I would add that testing should be done in different lighting conditions.
Lighting in the evening or dark that is good enough to read buy is not always good enough for the camera or is not illuminating the right areas.
Some people have reported that Starting the computer in Safe Mode (then Rebooting afterwards) seems to help. (it clears out some caches and starts up with reduced extensions)
As to actual Repairs and any Warranty that may still be in place I cannot say.
I can say that when people post about problems with repairs a certain stores someone else will tend to post that their experience was different.
You seem to report two different experiences with the two computers yourself.
