My ISP slaps a surcharge on use of iChat A/V

My ISP recently started blocking the ports used for iChat A/V and other peer-to-peer services and wants an extra $5.00 per month to open them. They say they have had to install expensive special equipment at their facility to process audio and video calls on their network, hence the surcharge. I've always thought that peer-to-peer calls such as iChat A/V are handled between computers only, requiring no help from an ISP other than an internet connection. Is this true or am I wrong?

I assumed - I know it is dangerous - but OP said that they started blocking ports, making it sound like they did not do so before.

This is not directed at you Johnathan, but for an ISP to dictate how you can and cannot use their service is poor customer service at best and just plain bad business. The ISP is a way onto the internet and if they were not prepared for someone to fully use their service then that is not the customers' problem or fault.
If I have a Napster-to-Go account or other music subscription service and legally download 40 gigs of music a day, will they then shut me down for using too much bandwidth? If I use Vonage for VoiP and talk to my mother-in-law in California, will they surcharge me? What if I have a MovieNow account and download full DVD movies daily? Will they send me a "over the limit" bill? If so that just plain stinks, reeks of money grubbing, and big-brother-ism. Where do they draw the line? Where do we allow them to draw the line?
Ditch them and get an ISP that understands how people really use the internet and doesn't try to shoehorn them into how they think you should be allowed to use the internet.

    Hello, quckvic.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You will need to reset your Apple ID password via the steps in the first article below.  Take a look at the option that refers to answering the security questions.  Since you do not have access to the email account and if you are unable to answer the security questions, see the second article.

My problem is trying to restore my iphone 4s. The icloud password is from a defunct email account through an ISP that I no longer use. I have upgraded to an iphone5s . I want to give the iphone4s to a special needs child that can make good use of it.I am at the point of despair. I can prove where I got the 4s etc. which seems to be a requirement from postings on forums. IT IS BREAKING THIS KIDS HEART AND BREAKING MINE. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP !!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

  • ISP is blocking us from using their smart host, they think we are spamming.

Our ISP is blocking us from using their smart host a few times these days. They told me that one or some of our computers were infected and spamming. I checked Trend Micro console, but have not seen any viruses so far.
We migrated from SBS2003 to SBS2011 a few days ago. And our ISP blocked us from using their smart host on the very next day. Ever since then, this has happened 3 times in a week.
If I use our own server to send out emails, some recipients will reject because of their spam filtering system.
    Any thoughts, suggestions??
    Thanks in advance!

On your network firewall, you can block outbound SMTP (25) for all of your network systems and create an allow outbound SMTP (25) for your server. Thus if a workstation is trying to send direct to the internet your firewall should prevent the communications
but it will allow your server to send mail out to your smarthost. If your firewall can support unified threat protection, enabling such services will aid you in assuring yourself and your ISP of the clean bill of health for your messaging environment.
You can also force a password change on all of your user accounts as a preventative measure. If you were dealing with ISP mailboxes or an external provider, this would be where the vendor would start.
You should also be able to get support from your ISP; if they are blocking your connection they must have some information to work with that will help you narrow your approach. Another option would be to look into third party smarthost/sanitation services
such as Forefront Online Protection for Exchange which can certify your email and can allow you to bypass your ISP.  Usually an ISP offers a free smarthost service but what you get in return is entry-level service, but if you pay for outbound smarthost
services, you get a service level and support agreement.
    Hope that helps,

  • Using the iChat video conferencing with a PC user

I have been trying to use the iChat AV with a PC user who is on AIM. Is this not possible? Even a one-way chat?

Unfortunately this is the only way I use iChat... I can't convince my relatives to make the apple jump. It will not work one-way, only if both sides have video. When it does work it works ok, but the windows side generally has all kinds of configuration issues (like personal firewall problems). It also isn't that great of an experience on the windows side, but that is just my opinion after using hte mac side.
There are some really good folks in the ichat forum with a LOT of great information on how to get this working correctly. But for the most part the problem is going to be on the other (pc) end. The one other person I do video chat with is a mac user in New Zealand and I am in the US - when we connect I never have a problem...
    Good luck!

  • Can you still use the ichat if you have the iCloud?

can you still use the ichat if you have icloud?

Seems to be a lot of discussion in the iChat Forum. Maybe you can get help there. Sorry!

  • What commands can I use in iChat, like "/me"?

What special commands can I use in iChat?
I know about the command /me
And I know there's a command to roll dice
What are the other commands, or what command will get me a list of commands?

    Hi,
    I know about slashme ( /me )
For those that don't know it is something you can type in a Text Chat and it wil appear in the middle of a Text chat at the same point Timing and the Joining/Leaving messages.
/me waves will appear as "Ralph Johns waves".
The name that appears for you and your Buddies doing this depends on how you store your name in the Address Book (Real name in iChat) and those of your Buddies. If you only know/store their Screen Name That is what appears.
I don't know about the Dice roll though.
Could do with knowing what that is.

  • ISP won't let me use my configured DNS server-what to do?

I put Open DNS servers in my Mac OS X Network Preferences (OS X 10.6) for when I use DHCP connections. This works fine on one network (DHCP to a wireless router connected to internet via DSL), but when I connect to another network, I find that I end up using the network's DNS servers - It appears my computer is sending a request out for the Open DNS IPs (208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220) according to Little Snitch's network monitoring, but the ISP seems to be internally changing it to their own DNS server within their network before the domain name is looked up. I can verify whether Open DNS is really used by visiting welcome.opendns.com/ or by going to the mispelled craigslist.og (which Open DNS redirects to the classified ads). The troublesome situation is when I connect by wifi DHCP to my TMobile cell phone.
What can I do about these sorts of ISPs? Is there anything I can do?
Also, is there a page I can visit to tell me the IP address of the actual DNS server used, not just what I configured in my Mac?
    Thanks

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - After all the stuff is on your computer, connect the iPod to yur computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.

  • ISP's who DON'T use BT's Infrastructure & PingPlot...

    Hi all.
Never got a solution to the 72 page thread last year! It was making me ILL so I kind of sacked it off. I shouldnt have to do that however!
Anyway, I'm ready to stress myself out again by trying to fix it/change my ISP.
Can anyone suggest any ISP's that don't hit BT Hardware?
Also, can anyone spot anything amiss with the following pingplotter. Particularly Hop 3, which sits at 50% packet loss ATM, but sometimes hits 70%-80% PL.
    THANKYOU.

I recommend you post the question on a non-BT broadband forum.

  • Using my ichat to video message non-MAC users

I have a macbook and have two (remote) family members who use Windows OS'. We are all new to video messaging but I have been impressed with what the short goes I have had on ichat.
Can anyone recommend any (video) webchat software that my family can download that will allow them to chat with me on ichat. I want to avoid downloading any additional webchat software given how good ichat seems. Needs to be free and easy to install.
    Thanks

t's great that I have a camera to do video conference on my new macbook, problem is all my family uses Microsoft Messenger to video conference and I'm left out. Any software or downloads to make theses compatable? My family doesn't want to download AOL since thats not their service provider. Any other ideas or solutions? Thanks

you can use mercury here, this software is a open source and free. Is working with MSN. But I never try it. I heard that the sound does'nt work but maybe this issue is corrected now.
    http://www.mercury.to/
Also the best way to video chat with PC user is to use Skype. Your friend need to install skype too, but the experience is very close than the iChat experience. But iChat is beter anyway, we hope that apple will make iChat for PC.
