Now, I wish to upgrade from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to latest version of OS X Yosemite, but I am in doubt and worry if after upgraded to Yosemite, can I still using my Windows XP where I installed now in Mountain Lion 10.8.5 BootCamp?
Yosemite does not allow a new installation of XP, but an existing XP installation is self-contained and will continue to work. Does your XP installation use a FAT partition? You may be better off using NTFS and then upgrading to Yosemite.
Will the Yosemite upgrade process delete my Windows XP partition or crash my current BootCamp? Can I still have an option to load OS X or Windows XP (press 'alt/option' key during boot up) after upgraded to Yosemite?
If you have made any re-sizing attempts to WXP partition Yosemite will cause problems, otherwise the Yosemite upgrade leaves XP untouched.
Are there any specific reasons to upgrade to Yosemite?

  • Back to square one: new iTunes and QuickTime CRASH, CRASH, CRASH

I've been struggling with iTunes and QuickTime ever since the upgrade to 6.0.4. Everything worked just fine until then, and has worked fine since I got my iPod last June.
A couple of days after the upgrade to 6.0.4 iTune started crashing, with the error message: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Please note this is only about using iTunes to play music on my computer (my iPod seems to be working fine.)
I've removed iTunes and QuickTime, reinstalled them, and this works for a couple of days, then iTunes starts crashing again (this has now happened twice.)
Strangely, this time, tunes in Party Shuffle at start up (from the last normal exit of iTunes) play just fine, but when I try to play something out of Library or swtich to a different genre or playlist in Party Shuffle, the programme crashes: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I've tried opening QuickTime alone, and it fails to open (no error message) it gets as far as the player, then there's a windows "thunk" and QuickTime closes.
So now I will uninstall, reinstall (starting with QuickTime, which seems to be the real culprit here) and maybe it will work for a couple of days. Computers are supposed to save time, not take up time in this way.
I don't seen any sign or word of a new version of QuickTime with a fix to this problem (many seem to be having it). How long do I have to go on this way. Perhaps the best is just to use another Windows Media Player or Nero ShowTime ... these seem to function without any sort of problem.

    Thank you Katrina and MossMan,
I do keep my computer under pretty tight wraps: Outpost firewall, AVG anti-virus, MS Anti-spyware. Ran the Ewido scan as suggested, Ewido did find quite a few cookies it considered of medium threat spyware ... removed these, and this did not resolve the problem with iTunes/QuickTime. Anyway, I'm not sure that cookies can cause programmes to crash?
I still think that it's unlikely that the problem with iTunes and QuickTime starting right after the upgrade to iTunes 6.0.4 and its QuickTime counterpart, is just a coincidence.
And if QuickTime is particularly vulnerable to some malware that none of the security programmes on my machine can find, and malware that has no effect on any other programmes, including other media players, then maybe this vulnerablity should also be something Apple should try to address.

  • ITunes and Quicktime crashing

I recently got a new computer and I installed iTunes on it. When I start iTunes it says "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then I can choose to either report my problem to Microsoft or not. When I try to open Quicktime it says "Quicktime failed to initialize. Error # -2095. Please make sure that Quicktime is properly installed on this computer." I tried downloading Quicktime fomr the link from the "itunes won't load" thread. But the same error showed up when I tried to start Quicktime. What can I do to get iTunes and Quicktime to work on my computer? Thanks!

    hi misskiri!
that certainly sounds like a broken quicktime to me.
let's just try the standalone QT 7.0.3 install again. let's take a few additional precautions though. see:

  • Itunes and quicktime wont open when click on it

    Hi,
I am unable to open Itunes or Quicktime on my netbook. I have tried reinstalling the software but it wont work. Please can someone advise how I can get it working.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

In recent times, the error-message-free iTunes and QuickTime launch failures have been indicating that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files. (Those sorts of applications often use the Visual C++ runtimes to keep track of the componentry, so it seems consistent that an update to those could cause the symptoms to flare up on a PC.)
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
If you have a 32-bit Windows 7, open the "System32" folder.
If you have a 64-bit Windows 7, open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • ITunes and Quicktime crash on start.

Okay, I've been struggling with this one for days.
I'm running Widows 7 64bit. I had iTunes working fine for a couple weeks, then just last week I started having issues. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, cleaned the registry, uninstalled video drivers, booted in safe mode, installed QuickTime separately, uninstalled and tried iTunes 7 and 8, used the 32bit install instead of the 64bit and still nothing works. This is driving me batty because now I can't update my iPhone which is really annoying. I've looked all over the net and no one seems to be able to help me.
*The problem*: When I start iTunes or Quicktime (including any of the executables in the Quicktime folder) nothing happens for about two seconds then I get the standard Windows error iTunes or Quicktime "has stopped working" check online for solutions...

Hi all - I have solved this - I remember I uninstalled a codec pack and since then Quicktime failed to work.

  • ITunes and Quicktime crash when opened!!!

    Ok, I'm kind of panicking.
I have the iPhone 4 now and I updated my iTunes last week. It was working fine until today. I got a bonjour disable message, and now neither application will work. I then check my services and bonjour was started. I've been restarting it but it makes no difference as far as itunes is concerned. I have Windows XP. Any ideas?
Many thanks from a very stressed guy up at 3 am attempting to figure this out!

  • After installing Windows XP SP3, iTunes and Quicktime crash at startup

I use iTunes almost every day, and until now have had almost no problems. But as of Sunday afternoon 5/11/2008, I found iTunes crashed on startup. Soyon after, I discovered Quicktime had the same problem. For both apps, I tried rebooting, upgrading, uninstalling/reinstalling, running Norton 2008 virus scan and registry cleaner. Same problem no matter what I did.
I just noticed, though, that my Windows Update (which I have naively set to automatic) history shows that, on that same day, it automatically installed Windows XP SP3. Coincidence... hmm.
So while I patiently wait for the uninstaller to complete the removal of SP3, I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.

Great link, thanks for posting it. I followed the advice therein, but unfortunately it didn't help. For the record, here's what I've done recently:
    0) Removed SP3.
    1) Removed all of the following:
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Apple Airport Express
    Apple Software Update
    Bonjour
    Quicktime
    iTunes
    2) Deleted all remaining folders related to the above apps from c:\Program Files.
    3) Ran Norton 360 (2008) registry cleanup.
    4) Ran Norton 360 (2008) virus scan (nothing found).
    5) Deleted the following folders (Angela is the user account):
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple Computer
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple
    c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer
    6) Rebooted.
    7) Downloaded and installed iTunes 7.6.2.
    8) Rebooted (just coz I love rebooting).
    9) Tried to execute iTunes, get error dialog: "QuickTime Player has encoutered a problem and needs to close."
    10) Tried to execute QuickTime, get same dialog.
At this point I'm thinking I've got a bad DLL under c:\Windows...

  • Hi.  Ever since I downloaded the last itunes and quicktime update (a week or so ago), I can't access any video podcasts or movies I have stored in itunes.  iTunes keeps crashing and telling me I have a quicktime error.  Do I uninstall quicktime? or?

Hi .  Ever since I downloaded the last itunes and quicktime update ( a week or so ago), I can't access any movies or video podcasts i have store in itunes on my pc (vista).  iTunes crashes and my error reports tell me it is a quicktime error.  Do i uninstall and reinstall quicktime, or completely uninstall itunes and reinstall it -- if so, what will i lose?  Help, please!

when i try to update itunes and quicktime, it stops me and says " The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" please help.

Before trying the update again, use Microsoft's Fix it solution at http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall. Use it to uninstall iTunes and Quicktime. It bypasses this not uncommon problem. When the solution finishes, the selected program will be uninstalled. It can take several minutes and I have seen as much as half an hour.
After iTunes & Quicktime are uninstalled, try the update again.

  • ITunes and iTuneshelper crash when I plug in my iPhone

I'm out of ideas on this problem...
Beginning yesterday, when I plug in my Iphone to sync it with iTunes, both iTunes and iTuneshelper crash, and Windows gives me the option to create a crash report. As a result I can no longer sync my iPhone with my Thinkpad.
No new software in the past several days, no other change in system stability. iTunes 9.0.3.15, iPhone OS 3.1.2, Windows XP SP3 with all updates applied.
Is there a log or dump file I can upload to help point to my problem?
    Thanks in advance.

edit: I should add that when I plug in the iPhone, iTunes doesn't even get to the point of displaying its gui...it crashes on start and iTuneshelper goes with it. If I leave iTuneshelper not running and just re-run iTunes by manually starting it, it won't recognize the iPhone but doesn't crash, either, when I plug in the phone. I know iTuneshelper interfaces the phone to iTunes, so I guess something is going wrong in the iTuneshelper-iPhone exchange.

This is interesting: when I attempted to re-boot into safe mode I inadvertently booted into the Thinkpad Rescue and Recovery partition. The first thing it does is check the core OS files, and it found that ws2_32.dll was corrupted. It replaced the file and I re-booted Windows in normal mode. After it finished booting I plugged in the iPhone and up came iTunes. The phone synced and I'm back in business.
I'm going to take a look at the article you just pointed to, never heard of that tool. Hopefully Windows remains stable and whatever corrupted ws2_32.dll was a one-time actor.
Thanks for your help here, you got me headed down the right path.

  • Itunes and Quicktime errors when installing

HELP! I tried installing the latest version of Itunes, but I keep receiving a variety of error messages. The procedure entry point QTCF_CFUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link library QTCF.dll
The most common cause of that one is a misplaced older version of the QTCF.dll lurking about in your system. On an x64 system, the best place to start looking is in the C:\Windows\sysWOW64\ directory.
Do you see a QTCF.dll lurking in there? If so, try dragging it out onto the desktop. Can you launch iTunes and QuickTime now?

  • ITunes and QuickTime stopped working after an upgrade...

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get my iTunes working again. Here is what I have done already in order:
    1. Does not work regardless of user (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856)
    2. Tried running with changes to MSCONFIG
    - Ran according to Apple Support Web Site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538)
    - Ran in Diagnostics mode
    - Ran in /SAFEMODE
    3. Uninstalled and removed from any reference from registry
    4. Removed iTunes configuration files (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386)
    5. Installed WinInspector Spy and launched iTunes to see what happened. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to copy and paste the log, but it shows the iTunes window class being created, a bunch of other stuff, then the OfficeWatson class, stuff and then the infamous "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. After hitting the Send Error Report, I see the OfficeWatson window being destroyed and that is it. This leads me to believe that the problem is somehow with the outlook integration between iTunes and Windows? So I looked in my Add/Remove programs and sure enough Office and Outlook were upgraded the day after the last time i was able to use iTunes. So I tried uninstalling Office, iTunes and QuickTime. QuickTime refused to uninstalled claiming a fatal error. I then forcably removed it as described in the apple knowledge paper. Another interesting point, when I ran QuickTime, nothing happens, not even a crash message. When I run QuickTime Preferences from the system tray, the dialog shows, but when I click on the FileTypes tab, I get a RUNDLL error: "An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl".
I also tried running StraceNtX.exe against it, but it doesnt create the right environment for iTunes (it thinks it is Windows 2000 and does have the right service pack).
PLEASE can someone help? This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was on another computer that came with a "real" restore point (not the stupid one Windows has that does not work) and I solved it by simply restoring back in time. This time I do not have that option!
ARGH - I really do not want to have to use Media Player.
Is there a way to force a stack trace? I am a UNIX programmer and not familiar with Windoze.

It sounds as though things have got pretty screwed up. If you couldn't clean things up properly with the MS installer cleaup, there is thread on cleaning up uninstall information in the registry.

I am not sure that I have anything more to offer as you appear to have done most things. Have you tried turning off all security software while doing the install, and doing the MSconfig thing with just Quicktime. Presumably your system is free of malware?
As a matter of interst, what happens if you have the task manager running when you start Quicktime, does it start and then stop, or keep running or not start at all?
A few people seem to have these intractable problems and the forum expert on this has been away since christmas, but you could try searching the forum for "b noir" posts about install/launch problems.
