My iTunes dilemma...

For a long while I've been an iTunes user on Windows. I was hooked and purchased all kinds of media - musics, shows and movies.
After about a year of coping with Vista and XP I had to resort to linux and it's been a dream for all my apps - except for iTunes. My thousands of dollars worth of media is completely unusable.
It's been more than a year now - I havn't touched my iPod 30g or my media. I tried wine and my old windows in a VM and they are both unbearably slow. And I think there is way too much complexity in any type of conversion as I have so much and so many types of media. Will Apple ever give some means for my platform to at least play my music?
Thanks for any help you can offer in resolving my dilemma. Please don't respond if you wish to flame or troll.

You will not be able to play DRM protected music from the iTunes Store on your Linuz machine, however you are allowed to burn it to an audio CD which can be used as any other audio CD.
There are various iPod managers that will work with Linux and play non DRM protected tracks, see the list here which includes which operation system they work with.

  • Who can HELP me with an seemingly impossible iTunes dilemma?

Good day all and greetings from Malta (EU),
I have what seems to be the need for an "impossible" solution. Let me explain my dilemma.
I have never wanted to use the new versions of iTunes past 10.7 for ONLY ONE simple reason that the developers of iTunes have decided to eliminate.
I am a digital dj - I use iTunes as my cataloging system for all the tracks I play. I am the kind of person that likes to prepare as much as possible before I play. Up till 10.7 there was an option to open MULTIPLE playlist windows. This was very important to me because that would mean practically that how ever the mood moved on the dance floor I was able to just choose from the open playlist windows without having to spend needless time searching for them while playing (which can be a big distraction)
I have recently purchased my FIRST Mac (17" MacbookPro) and I have Yosemite running on it. I have followed tutorials to downgrade iTunes (using Pacifier & AppZapper) to 10.7 in order to get the only one feature I needed but was not available in future upgrades.
I have a few problems. When I connect my iPhone it is not recognised and when I use the finder window I constantly get error messages popping up.
So here's the thing. I DON'T mind re-installing the updated version of iTunes to make the OS run properly and to connect my iPhone but I can't do this without the old version as well.
Is there a way to be able to rename the 10.7 version of iTunes so I can continue using that and it's own library AND also be able to install the latest iTunes so I can eliminate my problems and continue using the 10.7 version. I can point out that the updated version does not need to have the same library... I'd ONLY need that to eliminate the error messages & be able to connect my devices.
can ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE help me with this dilemma? I searched "high and low" on Google and in the Apple Support Forum but I have failed to find an solution....
Thanks and I am sooooo looking forward to someone helping me as soon as possible.
    And Happy Holidays EVERYONE!!!
    Chris Brown

You could repartition your drive to have a different OS X with the older iTunes there, and the newer iTunes on the existing partition. Back up everything beforehand. See Kappy's advice in this thread. Partitioning my Hard Drive

  • Frequent iTunes dilemmas.

So I go to go on iTunes the other day and a notice comes up that says "Newer Version of QuickTime Required" and then it says "QuickTime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires QuickTime version 7.1.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes." So i reinstalled it twice and it STILL doesn't work...WHAT DO I DO??!?!

First go here and try installing "Quicktime WITHOUT iTUnes" http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

  • ITunes dilemma

1)Cannot download music from itunes store from wishlist. "Buy" button does not work.
    2) Network connectivity test - "Secure link to itunes store failed".
    3) And, from website, cannot download latest version of itunes. Will not download at all.
    Caught in a Catch-22.
    Suggestions?

Yes.  Install the iTunes program on your computer, create an account, then redeem your gift card and use your account to buy songs.
Note that the iTunes Store sells songs in AAC format.  Some MP3 players can play AAC and some cannot.  If yours cannot, you can convert the AACs to MP3 by following these handy-dandy instructions:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550

  • My App store and itunes has disappeared from my iphone

My app store and itunes apps have disappeared from my iphone.
I suspect Apple is responsible and is trying to force an upgrade. Does anyone know if this is true? because if it is we should object to this.
The upgrade on my ipad was such a horrible experience, I don't want to do it to upgrade my iphone. (Upgrades have been a nightmare every since the itunes interface was changed. In my view, iTunes is the now one of the most unintuitive interface imaginable - [bar windows 8]. Prior to that it was generally easy to do upgrades and backups without hiccups and the interface was great. Now its too obscure to find what you need to do.)
I have been an Apple fan since the original Apple computer - but am not very happy with recent changes that affect use-ability and reliability.
General grumbling aside - every time you upgrade, you have to reload all of your apps; and a lot of favorite apps won't work with the new system. That's another reason I don't want to upgrade.
Without the App and iTunes application - you can't selectively update the apps you want to update or even access your music.
    Questions:
    1. Does anyone know why the Apps and iTunes apps disappeared? (I'm not the only one complaining about this.)
    2. Does anyone know how to get them back without having to effectively erase your phone and start over?
    3. Does anyone know how to get iTunes on the computer to recognize your iiphone when the itunes app disappeared off it?
    Thank you.
    DD

    Hi Dahveed,
Thank you again for the advice. But, rebooting did not help.
In the end I was forced to upgrade.
I am relieved to say that this upgrade went very smoothly compared to other upgrades.
I did not have to re-download apps and they appear to be in their normal folders - except a new app page 2 (after the primary page) appeared containing only the missing apps. This was not there before.
Answer to the disappearing Apple App Store and iTunes Dilemma:
The answer to this problem unfortunately appears to be to upgrade the system.
In my experience the Apps (which presumably are removed to force the user into an upgrade) then re-appear.
On the positive side, at least on this occasion, it did not turn out to be a nightmare make work project.

  • Itunes store suddenly won't let me buy music - I click on "buy" and nothing happens

Up until today for some reason I cannot purchase music from Itunes. I logged in this morning and added a giftcard I was given and also updated my card details as my card had expired. I click on any other link in itunes so for instance to hear a sample of a song, but when I click "buy" absolutely nothing happens. I have checked that current itunes is updated which it is, however it is not the latest version as my software does not support the latest version - but this shouldn't affect my ability to purchase music, as my parents have an older mac computer and are still able to purchase. I have not therefore updated any software today as I am up to date as far as I can be on this computer. It was working fine a couple of weeks ago when I made some purchases - I have no idea why it is not working now? Perhaps Itunes itself is having problems?
    Any suggestions?
    Help much appreciated

AlexCarey, I've been having issues purchasing recently and place a number of calls to the support team. On Oct. 5th, and on my own decision, I went into my itunes profile and re-entered my credit card expiration date and security code. (Notice, it is not displayed for safety measures.) Today, I received an email from Apple support verifying if I made changes made to my account. For the heck of it, I logged back into itunes; click "Buy". It's working again after three days of failure. However, diagnosis still displays "Secure link to itunes store failed". Very confusing state of affairs, lately. See my post on "Itunes dilemma"

  • I can't burn purchased tunes on a disc because of the infamous "error 4310". Why are loyal customers copntinually frustrated with the lack of or nonexistent answer to our dilemma?  ITunes, why offer "support" if you are unwilling to give it?

I cannot burn purchased tunes on a blank disc because of the infamous "error 4310".  Countless ITunes customers are frustrated that there are no  "free" answers for this dilemma. Unfortunately, the  "support"  that is so highly promoted and encouraged is merely community members venting their frustrations.
ITuines this is not at all professional on your part.

Hi to everyone that replied and many thanks for your input.
I have bought well known and established artists CD's containing their music, track lists and artwork files from branded retailers. When I have loaded them into iTunes, it automatically loaded the artwork files FROM the CD I bought, so all that nonsense about audio CD's having nothing but audio isn't accurate. No, they were not DVD's either. I will endeavor to find a software package that CAN do what I need as an independent artist. iTunes just doesn't cut the mustard for me, even though it's free. I do know about issues with copyright and artists protection, but there should be something that can be done or made in iTunes, so it doesn't infringe copyright of artists, but can be used by artists like myself without the software being abused by freeloaders. Oh well, maybe when I'm too old for this malarkey...

  • HT1386 I have a new iPhone and want to purchase a ringtone on iTunes.  It keeps asking for answers to a question that I did not set up and don't have the answer for.  How do I get pass this dilemma?

I have a new iphone and want to purchase ringtones from itunes.  Itunes is asking answers for security questions I did not set up and I can't answer them.  How do I get past this to be able to purchase.  I can purchase songs on my MAC and sync but itunes doesn't give the option to purchase ringtones on the MAC, just the iphone.

If the email hasn't arrived after a few hours and isn't in a spam filter, you need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • ITunes Library Dilemma

Okay I have a small situation I would like to resolve....here's the 411 on what happened:
My 4 year old Dell laptop is running low on space so I recently purchased an external 500 GB hard drive. I did it primarily to copy all of my important information from my laptop in case in crashes (since PC's tend to do that). Prior to the purchase, my iTunes library consisted completely of mp3's I had previously collected. The bulk of my music was still on CD's.
After making the purchase I decided I could keep all of my music in one place by importing all of my CD's into iTunes. First, I copied my music folder from my laptop onto my external hard drive manually through Windows Explorer.
Then, I changed the default music folder in iTunes from C:\My Music to G:\My Music (G: is the external hard drive).
I then began importing all of my CD's (which took quite a bit of time), which ended up in G:\My Music. I was happy that I could now listen to all of my music in one place without pulling out CD's.
I then proceeded to edit album and artist information about all of the previously collected mp3's, *not knowing that I was editing the files on my laptop and not on my external hard drive.*
    So here's the situation:
The C:\My Music folder contains all of the mp3's I collected prior to importing my CD's WITH major updates to aritst and album information. This entire folder is still mapped to my iTunes library.
The G:\My Music folder contains 1) all of my imported CD's and 2) all of the mp3's I collected prior to importing my CD's WITHOUT major updates. Only the imported CD files are mapped to my iTunes library. The mp3's without updates are not.
I would like to move C:\My Music into G:\My Music, essentially replacing all of the previously collected mp3's WITHOUT UPDATES with the mp3's WITH updates (and freeing up a considerable amount of space on my laptop). Is there a way to do this in iTunes while still preserving all of the playlists, or I do I have to re-create everything manually?
Hopefully that made sense.....I would appreciate any advice anyone can lend!

You should be able to use the "consolidate library" command to accomplish this.
    First, double-check preferences:
On the Advanced tab, make sure iTunes is directed to your external hard drive, and that the option to "copy files to iTunes music folder location when adding to library" is selected. Click OK
Click your File menu, put your mouse over Library and choose Consolidate Library.
This basically looks at what's in iTunes and compares it to the music folder location denoted in preferences. Anything not located in that location will be copied to that location. Nothing should be duplicated, and, by design, nothing will be deleted from the original location, so deleting from your C: drive is still up to you.
    Hope this is helpful

  • Dilemma: How Can I Transfer My iPhone 3G Contacts to iPhone 5 or iPhone 4 If iTunes Won't Sync It?

Hi. The iPhone 3G has 4.2.1 which iCloud doesn't support. It means my Contacts on the iPhone 3G can't be synced to my iMac because Mountain Lion gets the updated Contacts from iCloud. If I'll buy the iPhone 5 (assuming it great beyond expectations. Almost 4 years with iPhone 3G is great- very durable even if it's made in China; it's the designer that counts when it comes to quality I guess for the most part) or future iPhones I won't be able to transfer all the data, the Contacts especially to iPhone 5 or later? (even If use apps like iPhone Explorer which doesn't actually see the Contacts in the iPhone 3G but if even if it did it still won't be compatible with iTunes to transfer the Contact to iPhone 5).
What could be a solution. Should install onto an USB external drive an earlier OS that has an iTunes that'll work with iOS 4.2.1 so I can primarily backup Contacts? If that's a solution, what OS would that be and what iTunes version?
    Thank you in advance.
    Gbu.

I would sign out again, then update your Mac (latest version, not 10.7.3 as shown in your signature), open "Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and then choose iCloud and sign in again. I would also do the same on your iOS device (sign out and in). Make sure to confirm the message when you will be asked to merge the contacts with iCloud.

  • Question I have a dilemma . I added a lot of songs in my iTunes now when I synced my ipod this message appear "Elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additiona

I addesd a lot of songs in my itunes, now when I synced my ipod this message appear "elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the itunes library (additional 382m is required). Then I uncheck a lot of song and synced my ipod again same message appeared. Do I need to buy a new ipod with more memories? Somebody told me to check apply after I unchecked some of the songs but I cannot find the word APPLY. please help I'm not a very technical person.

The Sync button becomes the Apply button, if you change the iPod's settings in iTunes.  If you are only unchecking songs in the iTunes music library, you click on the Sync button.
When you select the iPod in iTunes, you see the iPod's Summary screen on the main part of the iTunes window.  There is a checkbox there for Sync only checked songs.  Did you check that checkbox?  If you want iTunes to ignore the songs you unchecked when syncing your iPod, that setting needs to be enabled.  If you change that setting, you'll see the the Sync botton has changed to Apply.  Click Apply.
That method of unchecking songs works, but it may become annoying over time, as you need to uncheck more and more songs.  If you want advice on some other more convenient ways to make it work, you can post back.

  • A possible solution for the Itunes 12 album art dilemma!

I may have found the reason as to why the album art isn't working here are the steps i used to solve this!
    1. Locate the music within the hard drive.
    2. Select every single music you want to add an art to, Either ctrl ( or command) + click the multiple files, or Crtl (or command) A to select all
    3. Right click, and go to properties
    4. Uncheck "read only"
    5. save
    6. Go back to itunes, and add the album art using the original method, it should work now!
    Hope it helps!

  • How to share one iTunes library with multiple computers AND Apple TV? Help?

It seems like my dilemma may not be easily solved. Hopefully it isn't as complicated as I think it will be. Here's the situation:
My wife hates that, in order to see or do anything with the images she takes, I need to have iPhoto open on my computer (Mac Pro), and she then has to connect to it over sharing.
By the same token, I don't like that she buys iTunes content on her MacBook, which is sometimes a duplicate of content I already have. Now that the App Store is out, that is going to start getting really expensive.
So instead, I want us to be able to:
    1) Have ONE iTunes library on the network, and ONE iPhoto library. Both of these would be accessible to any computer on the network. When you launch iTunes, you would get all the media that is in that library.
    2) Both be able to access iTunes at the same time to listen to / watch content.
    3) Both be able to purchase iTunes content, and when it it purchased, it updates that single library. If I buy a song, the next time my wife fires up iTunes, that song is there for her to listen to.
    4) Have our two Apple TV units be able to play content from this library.
So, I know that we need something on the network. I have a Drobo with DroboShare, so that is one option. I also have a spare Mac Pro laying around, along with a copy of OS X Leopard Server.
I just don't know what route we should take with this. All I want is for us to share a library, to be able to both use that library, for us to be able to sync content from that library to our portable devices, and for our Apple TVs to also see that library.
    Possible?!

I'm sort of in the same boat. We've got an iMac with separate User Accounts set up and are currently sharing the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries along with streaming them to our Apple TV.
Right now I'm the only one with an iPod, however she'll be getting one in a couple of weeks.
We also just picked up a MacBook yesterday and I'd like to be able to sync certain libraries like iTunes and iPhoto so that no content gets duplicated on either the iMac or MacBook and so that we both have access to the current libraries for each program on our iPods and AppleTV.
I have an external hard drive that I back up the iMac on and I assume I could manually keep things current with that but there's got to be an easier way...that's why these are Macs right?
