My iTunes does not see the new ios 5 update on my ipod touch 3rd generation

hello i tried to seach for an update for ios 5 or 4.3 but my iTunes cant find it. It just sayes ur current version is 4.2.1

You just think you have a 3rd gen..
What some people don't know is that when Apple released Model MC086LL it was sold as a 8GB 3rd generation unit by some retailers. It really had the same guts as the 2nd generation model MB528LL with upgraded software. ALL 8GB "3rd generation" iPod Touch serial numbers pull up in the apple support system as a 2nd generation unit. 2nd generation units are not able to upgrade to ios5, therefore your last update will be 4.21.

  • How do I get the latest ios update on my iPod touch 2nd generation?

My iPod touch 2nd generation won't update past ios 4.2.1.  I have tried many different times, but everytime I try, a message pops up saying that ios 4.2.1 is the highest operating system when I know that ios 6 has just come out.  This is frustrating because since the operating system is still ios 4, it is very slow and crashes frequently.  Since it is so slow, I have begun to use it less and less for certain things because it is so slow.

"My iPod touch 2nd generation won't update past ios 4.2.1. "
    That is absultely correct.
" I have tried many different times, but everytime I try, a message pops up saying that ios 4.2.1 is the highest operating system"
That is also correct.  Ios 4.2.1 is the latest available software for the ipod touch 2nd gen

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

My iMac does not see the new Toshiba external drive in Finder or Disk Utility.  How can I get it to see the drive?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

I Downloaded the new iOS software on my iPod touch now when I turn it on it has a USB cord and says connect to computer and iTunes, well the only other

No. You have to connect the iPod to a computer and restore via iTunes.
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Find a friend or go to an Apple store.

I purchased the newest software update for my ipod touch 1st generation and it is saying it is it will now begin download but the status bar doesn't even appear? How can I start the download?

Well first off you shouldn't have had to pay for a download (just an assumption from the word "purchased".
If you are trying to install iOS 5 on your iPod touch, it won't work they arent compatible. I suggest checking what version of software you are trying to install and posting it in this forum so people can have a better understanding.

    Thanks!

    Thank you, Lyssa.
You must be right based on that article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353). The latest model of iPod touch is referred to as "iPod touch (Late 2009)" -- and NOT "iPod touch 3rd generation", as I erroneously assumed.
That completely answers my question about the USB power adapter.

  • Iphone 4 will not download the new ios update  ?

I deleted every app (including numerous apps iI had to pay for) on my iphone4 because the update could not be completed due to a storage shortage.  Now I paid $20 to get more storage and I find out after the fact that the additional storage i got was for icloud storage and update still cannot be completed.  Some one please tell me what to do before i fling this phone through the nearest window.  I have been trying to do this update for over a week now

Actually there is a way to update the phone without worrying about the size. See, when you buy an iPhone, say 16GB, you're only actually getting about 13GB of usable storage, because the operating system takes up about 3-4GB all by itself. So when you are trying to update, the phone is trying to add that 3-4GB to the phone in addition to the one that's already there, and then switch them around and delete the old one. The way around this is to do a restore. If you plug the phone into iTunes, make a backup, and then restore to factory settings, it will accomplish the same goal without having to worry about the space constraints. The reason is because the factory reset will take everything off the phone, then put the update on, and then allow you to restore your backup to the phone once the new software is there.

  • Hi, I tried installing the new software update to my iPod touch this morning, got an error message that I could not finish installing it, and now my iPod is completely unresponsive, please help? It won't respond when I plug it into iTunes or anything.

Hi, thank you for helping me! Every time I plug it into the USB port of my computer, there is an image on my iPod touch that shows a USB cord and tells me to plug it into iTunes, but it is completely unresponsive. I have tried holding the home and power buttons simultaneously for 15 seconds, and that does not do anything either. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

Do you remeber the exact (or close to it) wording of the error message?
Try manually placing the iPod in Recovery mode and then try to restore

  • Is apple going to fix the new iOS 6 that my IPod touch 4 updated to or can I reverse to an earlier iOS that actually worked? I never had freezes or crashes until iOS 5 hit and iOS 6 doesn't help. This really *****!

Can I reverse my iOS 6 back to the version that came out before 6. It worked great until vresion 5 invaded my iPod touch 4 32gb . My kids have the same issue and they are mad like I did something wrong. Please help me fix the mess. I want my old iOS back. Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

I agree with Home Button, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a bug fix update.
With that said, initially I did a wireless or OTA (Over The Air) upgrade.  Other than taking quite a while (almost 2 hours as I recall), it seemed to work OK until I started to actually check things out.
I was a little confused by the Pass Book app until I learned that you need to get "Pass Book" aware apps..  OK, no biggie..
Then the App Store was crashing...
On a hunch I hooked my iPod to my computer and restored it to factory settings and set it up as a new iPod.  I did not restore from a backup.  When the restore was fiinished I synched the iPod to my library.
So far so good.  The device seems to run as fast as it ever has, the App Store is stable, all of my music and apps are loaded....
The only thing that does not work is WiFi synch.
