My itunes doesnt recongise my ipod and have to reset factory settings

when ever i connect my ipod itunes says it doesnt recognise it and tells me to reset the factory setting in the summary tab in the ipod preferences but when i go to edit and click on the preferences there is no summary tab so i dont know what to do
p.s. on my ipod it says i have no songs on it but there is 500 megabites of space used up

You cannot download the same Apps that you have on your iPhone. They are two seperate stores.
The store you have on your iPhone is the same for any iDevice (iPad, iPhone and iPod)
The store on your MacBook is only for Macs.

My 1st generation ipad won't power up. It flickers but then no display. It is fully charged and I have restored to factory settings

The ipad originally lost half of the display on the screen and now won't display at all, other than a slight flicker when you first try to turn on. I have been able to back up the contents and have restored to factory settings. The battery is fully charged. There is about 20gb of memory space available. Please can anyone help in diagnosing the problem?

The screen has probalby died. Or the backlight.
You can look into getting it fixed but you may be at the point of comparing investing to fix an older device or putting that money towards something newer that will have a longer life.

Place the iPod in Recovery Mode and restore via iTunes.

You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

Sorry to ask, how do I do it please. I have my first ipod with the same account on both computers that have different libraries one of which I am building now. Do I have to de-authorise my original ipod on the computer that I want to use my new ipod on with the new library and then register my new ipod. There is more than one way to access the Apps Store and the iTunes store. One is via iTunes on your computer, and the other is via the apps on your iPod.
Just because you are logged in on your computer does not mean you are logged in on your iPod.
The reason your husband's user name comes up is because he was the last one to log on. You can change that by going to Settings>Store. Tap the Apple ID, Tap Sign Out, Tap Sign In, Tap Use Existing Appel ID, enter your e-mail address and Apple ID password, and tap OK.
