My iTunes hates me and won't upgrade or uninstall??

So I went to upgrade my itunes the other day because my itunes store hasn't been working. Every time I start the upgrade it downloads something then says run or open file so I click run then a box pops up that says repair or remove. So I click repair then it loads some stuff then it says:
Error writing to file C:\Program
Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\iTunes.dll Verify that you have access to that directory.
So then I click Retry and it doesn't work so then I click cancel and it doesn't work. So I got mad and removed the link off my desktop. Then I went to my computer and tried to uninstall it, and it won't even let me do that! It does the same exact thing. I have noooooo idea what to do.

Presumably you are using an account with admisitrator rights.
Was the error number 2330 by any chance?
Anyway as a first step try running a disk check. In XP, you would go to My computer, then right click on the c: drive and select Properties>Tools>>Error Checking.
The check takes place when you next restart your computer and can take a while.
I am not sure if it is the same in Vista.
Anyway once you have done that, try the following for cleanup and reinstall:
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
XP
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
Vista
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305409
If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
If it does, install iTunes.

  • ITunes hates me and won't open  HELP!

Basically, every time I try to start up iTunes, it says there was an error and the program had to close. I've tried reinstalling iTunes to fix missing programs etc. and I've tried changing some of the audio settings like the support page said to, but it still keeps saying there was an error. I also tried the handy-dandy debugging button, but then it says "An exception 'Unhandled Win32 Exception" has occured in iTunes.exe. However, no debuggers are registered that can debug this exception. Unable to JIT debug.' Unfortunately, I don't understand computer jargon, and am technologically challenged haha. Any suggestions?

P.S. If I were to entirely uninstall iTunes 7 to reinstall an older version (I don't really need the fancy stuff I get with 7) would I lose all of my music?
Thanks again, you've been extremely helpful so far, I appreciate it!

Anyone else have this problem and resolved it?
    Thank you!

Well, I hadn't rebooted after the 7.1.1 upgrade, but obviously I had to restart iTunes. After I rebooted my iBook iTunes worked... Maybe the 7.1.1 update should be marked with a must reboot?

  • ITunes keeps crashing and won't let me update to ios 5 + many more problems with iTunes

Here is alist of all my problems:

Sometimes I can get past the     backup issue by cancelling the back up and letting it sync, but no it won’t     even let me do that it freezes and crashes before it can even transfer my purchases.
All thishappens if I can even open up my iTunes.

You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes in order to get it working again. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • IPhone 3GS (iOS4) has iTunes/USB icon and won't even sync!

I have an iPhone 3GS. I was updating from iOS4 to iOS 4.0.1. in iTunes. At the end of the iTunes update I got a dialog box that says "iTunes has detected an Iphone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Then I got the iTunes with white USB icon on the face of my iPhone! When I try to sync with iTunes it says that I need to wipe my phone!
I restarted my computer. Repaired permissions. Rebooted the iPhone several times (and still get the iTunes/USB icon), tried to sync with iTunes. It won't work. I don't want to wipe my phone.
    Help!

Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • ITunes Store Freezes and Won't Load

I upgraded to Windows 7 recently and ever since i cant get the iTunes store to connect. When i try to search for something in the store it basically just gets stuck on loading forever and then at that point i have to force quit to close iTunes. Can someone help please?

Okay so I did a little more research and i found out that hundreds of people had this problem when windows 7 beta was out, and they had the following solution:
To those of you running windows 7:
Apparently in w7 there are a lot of compatibility errors with security programs and itunes. I have Norton Internet Security 2009, and I added C:\Program Files\iTunes to the auto-protect exclusions, and i haven't had any hang-ups since; no need for hard reboots or anything. iTune's Store doesn't freeze either.
I also read that disabling windows media player network sharing service fixes it, which I ended up doing also, but I'm not sure if that really affected the outcome or not.
You don't have to take my word for it either, here are the two main places where I gathered my information, you can do the same:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproperf/thread/598fe2b4-844d-4 12d-b195-5fa53dc62661

For those of you not using windows 7:
From what I read, I'm not sure if the same fix will work for your problem, but I encourage you to explore the site above for more solutions to your problem

  • Itunes/Iphone dead and won't reinstall; "services" won't start

I tried to do the autoupdate to Itunes 9.2. It ran into an error. I tried to download it manually; that also ran into an error. I decided to stay on the old version to avoid making things worse. When I went to do a regular synch on my iPhone 3GS, it offered to upgrade me to iOS 4.0. I accepted. It got stuck on the iPhone "connect to Itunes" screen, displaying a USB cable and an iTunes logo.
Now without a functioning phone, I tried to follow troubleshooting instructions and go back to getting iTunes working. I uninstalled each piece of software in the required order, verified the uninstall, and tried to reinstall. The reinstall runs into errors because it can't begin certain services. If I click "ignore" to try to keep going, I end up with three error messages before the installation ultimately fails and gives me only the option to retry or cancel:
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
I'm the only user on the computer, and nothing has changed since the last dozens of times I updated Itunes, so I assume I have whatever permission I'm supposed to.
Anyway, end result, I have no iPhone and no ITunes, and no idea what to do. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe a clue: I got into the Windows "Services" area, and I see that several services including "Apple Mobile Device" and "iPod" mentioned above are "disabled." When I try to change them to "Automatic," I get an error that says the service has "been marked for deletion," which apparently means I can't enable it.
    Ideas?

    Hi DJBentley2011,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue burning CD's in iTunes. Is the playback issue only occurring on a specific device and does the disc show up correctly in iTunes? The article linked below should help you resolve optical drive issues, it walks you through identifying potential issues and provides troubleshooting suggestions.

  • Itunes constantly crashes and won't open even efter removal and re-install.

It states "AppCrash" as the reason. I've removed all the hardware, and reinstalled it just to have itunes quickly open upon startup, immediately close again and state it was an app crash.

Thank you all for your input and sympathy! I did reset the PRAM before taking it in on Sunday, but that unfortunately didn't do it. I also tried the erase-then-install route, but the machine only gets through varying degrees of the install before crashing.
I hauled it up to the Apple Store (150 mi. RT, but great guys/fast service) who also believed it was RAM, swapped out the apparently 3rd party RAM (who would think you would have to specify APPLE RAM to an Apple Specialist/Reseller?!). Turns out it still crashes, so back I went on Monday. It's now waiting on a logic board and processor.
I've always bought direct from Apple before, but tried to save a few $ this time. Needless to say, those saved $ have been spent several times over in time and mileage, some of which would have been spent regardless of where the machine came from. However, had I bought direct, I could probably get a new machine more quickly at the store. If the machine isn't running wthin a week I will send it back west for an exchange. Thank you again. I'll follow up here when this is resolved.

  • Itunes 9.0.1 won't upgrade

    so i installed 9.0.1 fine
when i open itunes 9.0.1 it says an update is available. i click update, it opens the software installer, which then tells me that my itunes is up to date. so i can't get 9.0.2 from there.
i then went on apple's website and downloaded 9.0.2. ran the installer, and it installed correctly. when i opened up itunes it was still 9.0.1.
does anybody know what is going on?? i've got no clue

try if this tip by *Mike Johnson* helps:
    +Download a fresh iTunes.dmg. Close iTunes.+
+Then to get itunes to install from the .dmg you will need to go to HD>Library>Receipts>iTunesX.pkg and remove the iTunesX.pkg to the trash.+
+Put the iTunes app in the trash.+
+Backup the 2 files iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml (located in HD>User>User Account>Music>iTunes. Keep the b/u in a different location.) Reinstall iTunes. Launch iTunes. If all works and you are happy you can empty the trash.+

  • Installed iTunes 10.5 on Vista.  iTunes continually launches and won't stay closed.  How can I fix this problem?

I just installed iTunes 10.5 on my Windows Vista laptop.  Now iTunes launches itself about every 60 seconds on my computer.  I close the application and 60 seconds later it reopens.  Any ideas how to stop this?

Had the same problem (as have a LOT of others).
Took the following action which (knock on wood) seems to have solved it!
Plug in iPhone; when Sync starts, click on "iPhone" under Devices; click on "Summary" page; under Options at the bottom of the page, uncheck "Sync wiyh this iPhone over ..."; click apply; exit after sync is complete......my problem disappeared!
Note: if the box is already unchecked, try checking it; apply; uncheck; apply
    Good luck!
